Basic Emollients for Xerosis Cutis Not Associated With Atopic Dermatitis: A Review of Clinical Studies.

Xerosis cutis (dry skin) is a common dermatological condition that occurs when the water-holding or barrier functions of the skin are impaired. In addition to external triggers, xerosis cutis may be caused by endogenous factors (e.g., aging) or present as a symptom of other diseases, such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, ichthyosis, and diabetes. Basic emollients restore skin hydration and barrier function through the biophysical properties of their non-active constituents and are routinely recommended for treating xerosis cutis and diseases associated with dry skin. As newer "emollients plus"

[Toxic contact dermatitis in hairdresser trainees: study of therapy with steroid-free, pH-stabilized emollients].

In a pilot study on 869 trainee hairdressers eczematous changes of the hands, presenting as chronic toxic contact eczema, were found in 42-55% of the investigated persons. In a subsequent therapeutic study involving 144 trainee hairdressers who had marked chronic toxic contact eczema, it was shown that regular use of pH-stabilized creams and ointments and use of non-alkaline soaps are effective and the use of cortisone ointments should not be necessary. It was demonstrated that 70% of the probands showed clear improvement in eczematous changes as controlled by colour changes in the nitrazine y

Standardising Emollient Prescribing in Critically Ill Patients: A Quality Improvement Project.

Introduction Critically ill patients are vulnerable to skin dryness, irritation, and skin barrier impairment due to factors associated with critical illness and prolonged intensive care admission. Consistent skin care and the use of a standardised emollient may support a more uniform approach to skin barrier protection. However, variation in prescribing and product selection may result in inconsistent practice. This quality improvement project aimed primarily to increase prescribing of the locally recommended standard emollient, thereby reducing variation in product selection and standardising

Sensory contribution of emollient cascades in skin creams evaluated by CATA analysis.

The sensory performance of cosmetic emulsions is a critical determinant of consumer acceptance. While it is understood that emulsifiers are the main sensory contributors, systematic investigations that isolate the sensory contribution of emollients within emulsions remain scarce. This study presents the first comprehensive sensory analysis in a large dataset, specifically examining the impact of emollient cascades on the sensory perception of skin creams while maintaining a fixed emulsifier system. A total of 32 oil-in-water emulsions were formulated with the same emulsifier system at differen

Understanding of the residual odour of fatty esters used as emollient in cosmetic products.

OBJECTIVE: Fatty esters are known for their versatility, but in addition to their performance as emollients, emulsifiers, solubilizers, or dispersing agents, they have to meet more and more criteria to be used in cosmetic products. Thus, their olfactory characteristics are expected to be as neutral as possible. However, despite a step of deodorization during the synthesis of fatty esters, a residual odour is currently still perceived at the end of the process. METHODS: In this study, a specific analytical methodology combining sensory with chemical analyses was implemented to characterize the

Effects of pretreatment with a urea-containing emollient on nickel allergic skin reactions.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a moisturizer containing urea on allergic contact dermatitis. Twenty-five nickel-sensitized patients and five controls (non-sensitized volunteers) applied such a moisturizer on the volar side of one forearm twice daily for 20 days, while the other forearm served as the control. After treatment with the moisturizer, patch tests with 0%, 0.5% and 2% NiSO4 in petrolatum were applied in a randomized manner on each arm. After 72 h, the skin reactions were blindly evaluated by clinical scoring and by measuring transepidermal water loss and electric

Skin Barrier Modulation and Survival-Relevant Outcomes: A Systematic Review of Topical Emollients in Preterm Infants.

Preterm neonates have an immature skin barrier that predisposes them to excessive water loss, microbial colonization, and systemic infection. Topical emollient therapy has been proposed as a low-cost strategy to support barrier function. However, the extent to which clinical benefits reflect direct permeability changes versus downstream biological effects remains unclear. A systematic review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA 2020. PubMed, the Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar were searched from inception to January 31, 2025. Randomized or quasi-randomized controlled trials evaluating

Systemic Salicylate Toxicity From Topical Emollient Use in an Infant With Suspected Ichthyosis.

We report a case of a six-month-old female infant weighing 4.56 kg who presented with altered mental status, severe metabolic acidosis, and multiorgan dysfunction following chronic use of an over-the-counter topical cream containing salicylic acid. The patient had a longstanding pruritic rash treated at home with multiple daily applications of the same topical salicylic acid-containing cream. She developed symptoms consistent with salicylate toxicity in the absence of known ingestion, confirmed by an elevated serum salicylate concentration. Intensive care was required to manage profound metabo

Best practices, new perspectives and the perfect emollient: optimizing the management of contact dermatitis.

Contact dermatitis (CD) is caused by environmental agents, irritants, and allergens that penetrate the epidermis and lead to inflammation. An intact skin barrier prevents penetration and is important in maintaining healthy skin. Classical diagnosis of CD is made using the patch test, and traditional treatment strategies for CD promote skin barrier integrity and resolve the inflammatory component of the condition. This can be achieved by using emollient-based therapy, which is most important for skin barrier repair, and in addition to topical glucocorticosteroids, which are used in severe cases

Treatment of papulopustular rosacea with sodium sulfacetamide 10%/sulfur 5% emollient foam.

Acne rosacea is a chronic cutaneous disorder affecting as many as 14 million Americans. Papulopustular rosacea is the classic form of rosacea characterized by papules, pustules, and erythema. The skin barrier deficiency and vascular hyperactivity characteristic of papulopustular rosacea increase skin dryness and irritation, which can be further exacerbated by medications commonly used to treat rosacea. Sodium sulfacetamide 10%/sulfur 5% emollient foam (SSSE foam) is formulated for topical administration and is fragrance free and alcohol free. This nonrandomized, noncontrolled, open-label, pros

Dermatological testing of an emollient-treated menstrual pad with a novel foam absorbent core.

Dermatological testing was used to assess the skin compatibility of a menstrual pad with an emollient-treated surface layer and a novel, polymeric absorbent foam core. The test program included: 1) skin patch tests to assess cumulative skin irritation, 2) human repeat insult patch tests to assess the potential for contact sensitization, and 3) repeated application to the popliteal fossa ("behind-the-knee" test) to assess combined chemical irritation and frictional effects. Studies showed the new product and its components to be as mild to skin as other commercially available materials with no
