Role of Positive Emotions in Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy.

Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy, also known as "broken heart syndrome," is a transient cardiac condition characterized by sudden left ventricular dysfunction, often triggered by emotional stress or significant life events. While research has predominantly focused on the impact of negative emotions and emotional stressors, there is a growing interest in understanding the role of positive emotions in this unique cardiac syndrome. This narrative review explores the emerging research on positive emotions and Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy. It provides an overview of studies investigating the relationship betwe

Neural mechanisms of emotions, alexithymia, and depression.

This chapter brings the powerful conceptual tools of the science of parallel distributed processing (PDP) to bear on the cognitive neuroscience of emotions discussed in this book. Cerebral representations are encoded as patterns of activity involving billions of neurons. PDP across these neuronal populations provides the basis for a number of emergent properties: (1) processing occurs and knowledge (long term memories) is stored (as synaptic connection strengths) in exactly the same networks; (2) networks have the capacity for setting into stable attractor states corresponding to concepts, sym

Object attachment and emotions in hoarding disorder.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Object attachment is a core feature of hoarding disorder (HD), but it also occurs in people without HD. It is therefore critical to clarify differences between normal and abnormal object attachment. Although previous studies show that HD is associated with high emotional reactivity, no study to date has examined the nature and intensity of discrete emotions in people with and without HD in relation to object attachment. METHOD: Individuals with HD (n = 93) and matched controls (n = 93) were recruited via MTurk. They identified and described a possession of low monetary va

Autobiographical remembering regulates emotions: a functional perspective.

Emotional deviation has been considered an essential factor in emotion regulation, in that, attempts to compensate for the deviation is reflected on cognitive processes. In the present study, we focused on autobiographical remembering and tested the functional role of memory on emotion regulation. We specifically examined the congruence effect in individuals' subsequent memory reports after recalling emotional events. Individuals were randomly assigned to three groups to report either sadness or anger evoking events or emotionally unspecified events that they experienced in the last five years

Sleep deprivation impairs recognition of specific emotions.

Emotional processing is particularly sensitive to sleep deprivation, but research on the topic has been limited and prior studies have generally evaluated only a circumscribed subset of emotion categories. Here, we evaluated the effects of one night of sleep deprivation and a night of subsequent recovery sleep on the ability to identify the six most widely agreed upon basic emotion categories (happiness, surprise, fear, sadness, disgust, anger). Healthy adults (29 males; 25 females) classified a series of 120 standard facial expressions that were computer morphed with their most highly confusa

Regulation of emotions in psychogenic nonepileptic seizures.

BACKGROUND: Despite the long history of psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES), relatively little is known about the mechanisms that cause and maintain this condition. Emerging research evidence suggests that patients with PNES might have difficulties in regulating their emotions. However, much remains to be learned about the nature of these difficulties and the emotional responses of individuals with PNES. This study aimed to gain a detailed understanding of emotion regulation processes in patients with PNES by examining differences between patients with PNES and a healthy control group wit

Lateral asymmetry of positive and negative emotions.

This reaction time study examined whether the left and right hemispheres are differentially specialized to process positive and negative affect respectively in adult females and males. Either happy or sad facial expressions of emotion were presented simultaneously with neutral facial expressions to the two visual fields. Happy faces were responded to more rapidly in the left visual field-right hemisphere with no visual field differences for sad faces. Females were superior to males when emotional facial stimuli were presented to the left visual field and were more accurate in recognizing sad f

Towards a unified understanding of aesthetic emotions.

Aesthetic emotions have been treated with some degree of ambiguity in the new aesthetic science. They are often discussed as a crucial part of the aesthetic experience, but systematic progress on this topic is hindered by a lack of clarity on what "aesthetic emotions" refers to. Here, we briefly review the ways in which this concept has been operationalized in the aesthetic science literature, including unresolved debates about whether these emotions constitute a psychologically distinct class of emotions. We argue that both aesthetics and emotions research would benefit from the development o

Attributional Bias in the Assessment of Emotions.

This study examined whether individuals display an attributional bias when identifying the source of their emotions. Specifically, do people favor situational over dispositional explanations when attributing their negative emotions? Sixty-eight participants completed two assessments to identify the cause of emotions-one evaluating their own emotions and another evaluating someone else's. Dispositional and situational attributions were measured for both positive and negative emotions. The findings show that individuals tend to attribute their own negative emotions more to situational factors th

Cerebral topographies of perceived and felt emotions.

Emotions modulate behavioral priorities based on exteroceptive and interoceptive inputs, and the related central and peripheral changes may be experienced subjectively. Yet, it remains unresolved whether the perceptual and subjectively felt components of the emotion processes rely on shared brain mechanisms. We applied functional magnetic resonance imaging, a rich set of emotional movies, and high-dimensional, continuous ratings of perceived and felt emotions in the movies to investigate their cerebral organization. Emotions evoked during natural movie scene perception were represented in the

Emotions in social anxiety disorder: A review.

Extant cognitive behavioral models of social anxiety disorder (SAD) have primarily focused on cognitions and behaviors that maintain the disorder. Emotional aspects of SAD have been investigated but have not been sufficiently integrated into current models. To facilitate such integration, we reviewed the literature on emotional constructs (emotional intelligence, emotional knowledge, emotional clarity, emotion differentiation, and emotion regulation), and discrete emotions (anger, shame, embarrassment, loneliness, guilt, pride, and envy) in SAD and social anxiety. We present the studies conduc

[On some links between pain and emotions].

The entanglement between pain and emotions is increasingly recognized. Emotions can predispose to pain and contribute to its chronicisation but also to its relief. The placebo effect is a witness to the moderating influences of cognitions and emotions on pain. An awareness of these influences is of interest to patients as it can widen their therapeutic perspectives. Chronic refractory pain has often been linked to a history of abuse, neglect and psychological trauma whose neuropsychological and affective traces can predispose to painful complaints. The treatment approach requires strong commit

Relating Competitive Golfers' Perceived Emotions and Performance.

The present study examined relationships between golfers' self-perceived emotions (e.g., irritability, nervousness, tension), task-oriented coping, perceived control, and performance during a golf competition. We implemented a process-oriented golf analysis in which competitors rated these variables hole-by-hole in a competitive golf round. Within a two-level Bayesian multivariate autoregressive model, we showed that (a) within persons, emotions and task-oriented coping were reactions that stemmed from performance on the previous hole; and (b) between persons, player skill level predicted both

Violent emotions and the violence of life.

The paper discusses the violence of emotions and the violent retaliation against the mind as a way of protecting oneself against overwhelming pain. Leaning on Bion's thinking, it is suggested that violence may be an outcome of a quantity of excitation that the individual is unable to elaborate mentally. This violence is often dormant, covered by a veneer of civilization. Thus, in analysis we may repeatedly be deluded by the patient's seemingly non-psychotic functioning. Prenatal experiences that were never mentally registered serve as a model for overwhelming, undreamt and undreamable experien

Effects of emotions on heart rate asymmetry.

Heart rate asymmetry (HRA) is an index that accounts for an uneven contribution of decelerations and accelerations to the heart rate variability (HRV). Clinical studies indicated that HRA measures have additive clinical value over the more frequently used HRV indexes. Despite the abundance of studies on psychological influences on HRV, little is known whether psychological factors influence HRA. Based on previous research regarding HRA and stress, we expected that negative emotions compared to positive emotions would decrease the contribution of decelerations to HRV. Thirty female participants

Decoding moral emotions in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) exhibit abnormal neural responses when they experience particular emotions or when they evaluate stimuli with emotional value. Whether these brain responses are sufficiently distinctive to discriminate between OCD patients and healthy controls is unknown. The present study is the first to investigate the discriminative power of multivariate pattern analysis of regional fMRI responses to moral and non-moral emotions. METHOD: To accomplish this goal, we performed a searchlight-based multivariate pattern analysis to unveil brain regio

Positive functions of emotions in achievement sports.

This article presents the results of two research projects on the emotions of men engaged in achievement outdoor sports. The conditions were analyzed under which emotions carry out positive functions. The question strikes us as a fundamental one, because it is of crucial importance when it comes to increasing sportspeople's success. The theoretical framework applied was that of microfunctionalism. The method, of a qualitative nature, was based on in-depth interviews, each lasting between 1.5 and 2 hr with a total of 14 sportspersons. The results show that in order for emotions to fulfill posit

The relation of emotions to placebo responses.

The hypothesis put forth is that expectations of treatment effects reduce negative emotions and thereby reduce symptoms, e.g. pain. Negative emotions increase pain, and it is hypothesized that placebos reduce pain by reducing negative emotions, i.e. feelings of nervousness, fear and anxiety. Placebo analgesia has been shown to be mediated via opioid activity, and relaxation increases opioid activity. The placebo acquires its relaxing effect due to verbal information that pain will be reduced, or due to associations between the placebo and the reduction in pain after effective treatment. Thus,

Emotions in action through the looking glass.

The paper aims at highlighting how our primary understanding of others' actions is rooted in the mirror mechanism. To this end, the anatomical architecture of the mirror neuron system for action will be outlined as well as its role in grasping goals and intentions in others' motor behaviour. One further step through the looking glass of social cognition will be referring to the ubiquitous emotional colouring of actions and considering its links with the motor domain. This will allow a clearer perspective on the mechanism underlying our abilities for emotional understanding and on cases in whic
