Assessment of Psychosocial Risk and Resource Factors Perceived by Military and Civilian Personnel at an Armed Forces Medical Center.

The aim of this study is to identify the factors contributing to psychosocial risks (PSR) and the specific resources available within an Army Medical Center (AMC), with a view to developing a questionnaire adapted to this unique context. A qualitative study was carried out with 56 military and civilian employees, using semi-directive interviews. The results highlight similarities with PSR and resource factors already identified in the literature, such as workload, emotion management and salary recognition. They also reveal PSR factors specific to the activity of AMC staff, such as the need for

Inter-group conflict in health care: UK students' experiences of bullying and the need for organisational solutions.

This paper addresses bullying of United Kingdom (UK) nursing students whilst on work placement as a specific issue of inter-group difficulty that currently affects nurses and students working in the UK National Health Service. The authors begin by discussing the concept of bullying and sharing the types of bullying reported in two recent studies involving UK nursing students. Both studies illustrate the effects that negative workplace experiences can have on new entrants to the profession. After reviewing various individual solutions which have been recommended for reducing bullying, they sugg

Substance Use Among Nurses and Nursing Students: A Joint Position Statement of the Emergency Nurses Association and the International Nurses Society on Addictions.

Alcohol and other substance use by nurses potentially places patients, the public, and nurses themselves at risk for serious injury or death. Nursing students are also at risk for problems related to substance use. When viewed and treated as a chronic medical illness, treatment outcomes for substance use disorders are comparable with those of other diseases and can result in lasting benefits. Professional monitoring programs that employ an alternative-to-discipline approach have been shown to be effective in the treatment of health professionals with substance use disorders and are considered

Justice or Injustice: a History and Critique of the New York State Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs.

The creation of the New York State Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs ("Justice Center") was announced with great fanfare in 2013. Its goal is laudable: strengthening and standardizing "the safety net for vulnerable persons, adults and children alike, who are receiving care from New York's human service agencies and programs." Its jurisdiction is broad: covering residential and non-residential programs and provider agencies that come within the purview of six state oversight agencies, namely, the Office of Mental Health, the Office for People with Developmental Disa

Geriatric Forensic Medicine - A Specialty that can no Longer Wait to be Realised.

The rise in the population and the growth in the proportion of the elderly in our population are changing the structure of many of our communities and placing increasing demands on our social and health care services. "Scandals" regarding conditions and standards of care in residential aged care facilities have raised concerns about the regulation, assessment and auditing of these community services for the elderly. At the same time longer working lives change the age factors related to employment opportunities and the cadre of older employees presents a different range of human resource issue

Banned from working in social care: a secondary analysis of staff characteristics and reasons for their referrals to the POVA list in England and Wales.

Since July 2004, employers of social care staff working with vulnerable adults in England and Wales have been legally required to refer workers or volunteers dismissed for misconduct because they have harmed vulnerable adults or placed them at risk of harm to the Protection of Vulnerable Adults (POVA) list. The POVA list is unique to England and Wales, and is a powerful tool of quality assurance for the care sector and for the safeguarding of vulnerable adults. This article reports on part of a multi-method study including quantitative and qualitative elements to produce a rounded picture of t

Occupational health in the USA in the 21st century.

Comparable to the confusion encountered in the birth of the machine age is the perplexing reconfiguration of the United States' health care system. Paralleling the advances in medicine have been the divesting mergers and downsizing of industry, coupled with globalization, which have released millions of long-time workers. The labour contingent is changing, with the addition of great numbers of women and immigrant workers, and the manufacturing economy has become one of service and information. Serving the occupational health (OH) needs of such a force have been the professional societies of ph

Scapegoating and the unpopular nurse.

This paper considers the theories of scapegoating and their application to nursing. It reviews the literature on scapegoating drawing particular attention to those studies which have emphasised on the instrumental uses of scapegoating in organisational contexts. The paper draws on data from a qualitative study of the identification and management of the 'problem' nurse conducted in three healthcare Trusts. It describes a number of illustrative cases in which different types of scapegoating occurred. The paper argues that scapegoating is an ethical challenge which nurses must face.

[The problem of long/post-COVID in expert assessments].

Assessing long/post-COVID syndrome (PCS) following an infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a multidisciplinary challenge due to the diverse and complex symptoms. Besides discipline-specific evaluation of infection-related organ damage, the main issue is expert objectivity and causality assessment regarding subjective symptoms. The consequences of long/PCS raise questions of insurance rights in all fields of law. In cases of persistent impairment of performance, determining reduction in earning capacity is crucial for those affected. Recognition as an o

Caught Between Patients and Systems: Moral Injury in Trauma Practice.

Moral injury (MI) arises from conflicts with deeply held moral or professional values. Distinct from burnout, compassion fatigue, or PTSD, MI occurs when providers feel unable to provide care in alignment with their values due to circumstances beyond their control. This mixed-methods cohort study explored MI among trauma health care providers (THCPs) at a Level I Trauma Center. Study participants were trauma team providers who completed trauma-focused interviews and the Moral Injury Symptoms Scale for Health Professionals (MISS-HP). Clinically significant MI was common, consistent with existin

Getting It Right for Patient Safety:  Specimen Collection Process Improvement From Operating Room to Pathology.

OBJECTIVES: Specimen labeling defects within the perioperative environment are a known patient safety risk that carries the potential for adverse outcomes. These outcomes are a result of errors that occur when unsuspecting providers operate within poorly designed processes with little control over the specimen collection context. Many costly outcomes resulting from labeling errors may include patient harm, inappropriate treatments, lengthy investigations, corrective actions, and, at times, legal action. METHODS: This improvement initiative to identify and reduce the risk of specimen labeling

Your scarcest resource.

Most companies have elaborate procedures for managing capital. They require a compelling business case for any new capital investment. They set hurdle rates. They delegate authority carefully, prescribing spending limits for each level. An organization's time, by contrast, goes largely unmanaged. Bain & Company, with which all three authors are associated, used innovative people analytics tools to examine the time budgets of 17 large corporations. It discovered that companies are awash in e-communications; meeting time has skyrocketed; real collaboration is limited; dysfunctional meeting behav

Workplace gaslighting: a construct for organizational research.

Scholarly interest in gaslighting research has surged across various domains, particularly after it was named the word of the year in 2022. Despite growing research on the topic of gaslighting, the literature on workplace gaslighting remains limited, hindering the establishment of a clear, definitive concept. We review current scholarship on gaslighting through a systematic literature review and analyze definitions across various disciplines. The thematic analysis of definitions was used to delineate the attributes of the gaslighting phenomenon into necessary and contingent. We conceptualize t

Patient Satisfaction with Health Services at the Emergency Center of the University Clinic in Prishtina.

Purpose: Safety is a fundamental principle in patient care as well as a key component of quality management of health services. Improving patient safety requires constant energy, including all individuals who have direct or indirect contact with the patient. This means enhancing the approach towards the patient, modifying the workplace, improving the performance of the staff and redesigning systems with the aim of reducing patient risk. This approach involves almost all disciplines and actors, therefore, a complex approach in identifying the gaps, new policy making and policy implementation st
