Employment outcomes and PTSD symptom severity.

A diagnosis of chronic war-related posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been linked consistently to poor employment outcomes. This study investigates the relation further, analyzing how symptom severity correlates with work status, occupation type, and earnings. Study participants were male Vietnam veterans with severe or very severe PTSD who received treatment in the Department of Veterans Affairs system (N = 325). Veterans with more severe symptoms were more likely to work part-time or not at all. Among workers, more severe symptoms were weakly associated with having a sales or clerical

Consideration regarding infection during hospital employment.

Among the most important responsibilities of a hospital's employees' health service is the prevention or prompt identification of infectious illnesses among staff members. Infections constitute a major health hazard of hospital employment and, both intrinsically or as a consequence of subsequent transmission to hospitalized patients, can have devastating consequences. The risks associated with tuberculosis, viral hepatitis, rubella, herpes, meningococcal disease, and scabies are generally acknowledged and methods of control have been suggested. In addition, immunizations against diphtheria and

Beyond the Employment Dichotomy: An Examination of Recidivism and Days Remaining in the Community by Post-Release Employment Status.

Criminological research has tended to consider employment in a dichotomy of employed versus unemployed. The current research examines a sample of individuals 1-year post-release to assess the extent to which four distinct employment categories (full-time, part-time, disabled, and unemployed) are associated with reincarceration and days remaining in the community. Findings indicate disabled individuals remain in the community longer and at a higher proportion compared with other employment categories. Furthermore, unique protective and risk factors are found to be associated with each employmen

Why can't we fund supported employment?

Work is one of the most valued social rules in modern society, contributing to a person's sense of economic well-being, self-esteem, personal identity, and social status. Conversely, the inability to work or sustain employment due to a psychiatric condition is the primary factor in determining eligibility for disability benefits, such as Social Security Disability Income or Social Security Supplemental Income. Just as work is valued strongly by society, it is also important to people with serious mental illness. In this editorial, we contemplate why we cannot "do the right thing" and fully fun

Maternal employment and adolescent risky behavior.

This paper examines the impact of maternal employment during a child's first 3 years and during adolescence on his or her decisions to engage in a range of risky behaviors: smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol, using marijuana and other drugs, engaging in sex and committing crimes. Using data from the NLSY79 and its young adult supplement, we do not find strong evidence that mother's employment--whether early in the child's life or during adolescence--affects the likelihood of participation in risky behaviors. We note as a caveat, however, that insufficient statistical precision makes it diffi

Pre-employment screening among trainee bakers.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the prevalence of atopy in a vocational school so as to evaluate the feasibility of pre-employment screening. METHODS: The prevalence of atopy by family diathesis, prick tests, immunoglobulin E (IgE) concentrations, and personal history of allergic respiratory diseases was investigated in 144 trainee bakers and 81 students on a graphic artists course (mean age 15.4 years). Skin sensitisation to wheat, rye, and barley flours, to alpha amylase, and to storage mites was also evaluated. RESULTS: Personal allergic symptoms were reported by 13.2% of the bakers and 14.7% of th

Workforce Entry and Employment Trajectories Among Adolescent and Young Adult Hematopoietic Cell Transplant Survivors Without Prior Employment.

As survival after hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) improves, employment has emerged as a key survivorship outcome. However, little is known about employment attainment and sustainability among adolescent and young adult (AYA) survivors without prior work experience. We conducted a nationwide cross-sectional survey of HCT survivors transplanted at ≤39 years of age, aged ≥20 years at survey, and without continuous employment before diagnosis. We evaluated employment attainment, timing of first employment, and subsequent outcomes, including leave of absence and resignation. Cumulative inc

Employment characteristics, work environment, and the course of depression over 23 years: Does employment help foster resilience?

BACKGROUND: Depression is the leading cause of disability and represents a significant challenge to stable employment and professional success. Importantly, employment may also operate as a protective factor against more chronic courses of depression as it can function as a form of behavioral activation and scaffold recovery by facilitating community integration. The current study examined work-related characteristics as protective or risk factors for subsequent long-term depression trajectories. METHODS: Relations between employment characteristics and lifetime course of depression were exam

Effect of cervical dystonia on employment: A retrospective analysis of the ability of treatment to restore premorbid employment status.

Using a structured interview method, we sought to address the following questions regarding cervical dystonia (CD) and employment: (1) what is the frequency and severity of job impairment in CD; (2) what are the clinical features that contribute to job impairment; (3) how does the effectiveness of botulinum toxin (BTx) compare to oral medications in restoring employment status. In our population of 155 CD patients, employment was affected by CD in 53.3% (31.2% reduced hours or responsibilities, 3.3% changed to different job, 18.9% loss of employment) and 68.9% of patients reported reduced over

The effect of military sexual trauma on competitive employment status following veterans health administration supported employment services.

Military sexual trauma (MST) is prevalent, and some initial evidence suggests it is associated with impaired employment outcomes. The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) offers supported employment (SE) and Community-Based Employment Services (CBES), which consist of individualized employment support integrated with mental health treatment. The objective of this study was to examine the prevalence and effect of MST on competitive employment outcomes following participation in SE or CBES. Participants were a national set of Veterans who participated in VHA SE or CBES services between 2015 and

Factors related to sustainable employment of people with acquired brain injury or spinal cord injury: The employer's perspective.

BACKGROUND: Of those people with an acquired brain injury (ABI) or spinal cord injury (SCI) who initially successfully returned to paid employment, some exit the workforce before reaching official retirement age. Employers play a central role in ensuring a sustainable work situation for employees with a disability and in preventing such exits. However, the factors and mechanisms involved from the employer's perspective are still poorly understood. PURPOSE: The purpose was to determine factors which, from employer's perspective, have a particularly positive or negative influence on sustainable

Disclosure of mental illness to prospective employers: Clinical, psychosocial, and work correlates in persons receiving supported employment.

Deciding whether to disclose one's psychiatric disorder to a prospective employer is a complex decision for people with severe mental illness seeking to return to work, with potential advantages and disadvantages. The present study examined the rates, patterns, and correlates of disclosure in 51 participants (74.5% schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder) receiving high fidelity Individual Placement Support (IPS) who obtained competitive work over a two-year study period. Most participants (64.7%) disclosed their psychiatric disorder in their first job, and there was a tendency for those wit

Spinal epidural fibrosis following hemostatic agent employment.

OBJECTIVE: Failed Back Surgery Syndrome (FBSS) refers to a subset of patients who have new or persistent pain after spinal surgery for back or leg pain. Epidural fibrosis (EF) is a common cause of FBSS. Many agents aiming to prevent EF have been tested. However, hemostatic agents are readily available at hospitals, easy to reach and frequently used. For these reasons, oxidized regenerated cellulose, polysaccharide hemostat, hemostatic thrombin-gelatin matrix and chitosan linear polymer were evaluated for their effects on epidural fibrosis on rats after laminectomy. METHODS: 40 Sprague-Dawley

Consequences of Partner Incarceration for Women's Employment.

Research has documented the limited opportunities men have to earn income while in prison and the barriers to securing employment and decent wages upon release. However, little research has considered the relationship between men's incarceration and the employment of the women in their lives. Economic theory suggests that family members of incarcerated individuals may attempt to smooth income fluctuation resulting from incarceration by increasing their labor supply. This study used data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study (N = 3,780) to investigate how men's incarceration is as

Load carriage, human performance, and employment standards.

The focus of this review is on the physiological considerations necessary for developing employment standards within occupations that have a heavy reliance on load carriage. Employees within military, fire fighting, law enforcement, and search and rescue occupations regularly work with heavy loads. For example, soldiers often carry loads >50 kg, whilst structural firefighters wear 20-25 kg of protective clothing and equipment, in addition to carrying external loads. It has long been known that heavy loads modify gait, mobility, metabolic rate, and efficiency, while concurrently elevating the r
