Adhesion differentials control the rheology of biomimetic emulsions.

Animal morphogenesis involves complex tissue deformation processes, which require tight control over tissue rheology. Yet, it remains insufficiently understood how tissue rheology results from the interplay between cellular packing and forces, such as cortical tension or cell-cell adhesion. We follow a biomimetic approach to study this interplay, using oil droplets with tunable adhesion strength to mimic adhesive cells. We expose emulsions to cyclic shear and use a geometric method to quantify their rheology using only imaging data. We find that emulsions made of two droplet types change yield

Intravenous Lipid Emulsions in Infants: Is Balanced Better?

Parenteral nutrition (PN) is frequently required by extremely preterm infants due to gastrointestinal immaturity and complications of prematurity. Parenteral nutrition-associated cholestasis (PNAC) and intestinal failure-associated liver disease (IFALD) are common complications of prolonged PN. Plant-based intravenous lipid emulsions, containing proinflammatory omega-6 fatty acids and phytosterols, may contribute to these conditions as well as other comorbidities such as bronchopulmonary dysplasia and retinopathy of prematurity. Intravenous lipid emulsions containing animal-based fats, such as

Rapid dissolution of propofol emulsions under sink conditions.

PURPOSE: Pain accompanying intravenous injections of propofol is a major problem in anesthesia. Pain is ascribed to the interaction of propofol with the local vasculature and could be impacted by rapid dissolution of the emulsion formulation to release the drug. In this paper, we measure the dissolution of propofol emulsions including the commercial formulation Diprivan(®). METHODS: We image the turbidity of blood protein sink solutions after emulsions are injected. The images are digitized, and the drug release times are estimated from the pixel intensity data for a range of starting emulsio

Parenteral emulsions and liposomes to treat drug overdose.

Drug overdoses from both pharmaceutical and recreational drugs are a major public health concern. Although some overdoses may be treated with specific antidotes, the most common treatment involves providing supportive care to allow the body to metabolize and excrete the toxicant. In many cases, supportive care is limiting, ineffective, and expensive. There is a clear medical need to improve the effectiveness of detoxification, in particular by developing more specific therapies or antidotes for these overdoses. Intravenous lipid emulsions (ILEs) have been investigated as a potential treatment

Formulation and characterization of benzoyl peroxide gellified emulsions.

The present investigation was carried out with the objective of formulating a gellified emulsion of benzoyl peroxide, an anti-acne agent. The formulations were prepared using four different vegetable oils, viz. almond oil, jojoba oil, sesame oil, and wheat germ oil, owing to their emollient properties. The idea was to overcome the skin irritation and dryness caused by benzoyl peroxide, making the formulation more tolerable. The gellified emulsions were characterized for their homogeneity, rheology, spreadability, drug content, and stability. In vitro permeation studies were performed to check

Double inversion of emulsions induced by salt concentration.

The effects of salt on emulsions containing sorbitan oleate (Span 80) and Laponite particles were investigated. Surprisingly, a novel double phase inversion was induced by simply changing the salt concentration. At fixed concentration of Laponite particles in the aqueous phase and surfactant in paraffin oil, emulsions are oil in water (o/w) when the concentration of NaCl is lower than 5 mM. Emulsions of water in oil (w/o) are obtained when the NaCl concentration is between 5 and 20 mM. Then the emulsions invert to o/w when the salt concentration is higher than 50 mM. In this process, different

Intravenous fat emulsions and the pancreas: a review.

There is conflicting evidence of the effect of intravenous fat emulsions on pancreatic secretion. Intralipid is a safe component of intravenous nutritional support in patients with pancreatic fistulas, though it may minimally increase the volume, as well as the bicarbonate and amylase concentrations, of the output. Intravenous fat emulsions may rarely cause pancreatitis; this may be more likely in patients with Crohn's disease, given that three of the four reported cases occurred in patients with Crohn's disease. It is unclear whether hypertriglyceridemia secondary to the intravenous fat emuls

The use of fluorocarbon emulsions in cancer radiotherapy.

The chemical and physical properties of perfluorochemical emulsions which highlight their advantages and disadvantages for use in cancer radiotherapy are summarized. The radiobiological properties of two emulsions are reviewed: we have chosen the Fluosol-DA 20% and the PFOB emulsion 100 v/w% which is one of the most promising second generation fluorocarbon emulsions. The radiosensitization obtained in a human tumor xenograft with PFOB emulsion is compared to that obtained with other modalities used to overcome the radioresistance of tumour cells linked to hypoxia.

Cinnamaldehyde-loaded Pickering emulsions and high internal phase Pickering emulsions as eggless mayonnaise substitutes: from the rheology and oral processing perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Most studies have investigated the possibility of emulsions as mayonnaise substitutes, but have not paid attention to the bulk rheology and oral processing. The present study investigated the potential of cinnamaldehyde-loaded Pickering emulsions (PEs) and high internal phase PEs (HIPPEs) as mayonnaise substitutes by correlating their rheological and tribological properties. RESULTS: As the cinnamaldehyde content in the oil phase increased, PEs/HIPPEs exhibited reduced viscoelasticity and viscosity. The visual appearance of PEs/HIPPEs lost structural cohesiveness upon extrusion, a

Parenteral lipid emulsions: the state of the art.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Several types of injectable lipid emulsions (ILEs) have become available for parenteral nutrition. The purpose of this review is to highlight the most recent and interesting articles in the field of ILEs. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent literature has compared ILEs in various clinical scenarios (e.g. abdominal surgery, chronic intestinal failure, critical illness, and preterm birth). Favorable clinical effects of ILEs containing fish oil have been observed in studies on surgical patients with Crohn's disease, critically ill patients, and patients with intestinal failure-associated

Lipid emulsions in parenteral nutrition: does it matter?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Recently, clinicians have shown interest in switching patients to nonsoybean-based intravenous lipid emulsion (ILE) formulas for parental nutrition (PN) due to adverse outcomes related to high Omega-6 content in soybean oil (SO) ILE's. This review summarizes recent literature on improved clinical outcomes with new Omega-6 lipid-sparing ILE's in PN management. RECENT FINDINGS: Although there is a paucity of large-scale studies directly comparing Omega-6 lipid sparing ILE's with SO-based lipid emulsion use in PN in ICU patients, there is strong translational and meta-analysis

Fluorescent Janus emulsions for biosensing of Listeria monocytogenes.

Here we report a sensing method for Listeria monocytogenes based on the agglutination of all-liquid Janus emulsions. This two-dye assay enables the rapid detection of trace Listeria in less than 2 h via an emissive signal produced in response to Listeria binding. The biorecognition interface between the Janus emulsions is assembled by attaching antibodies to a functional surfactant polymer with a tetrazine/transcyclooctene click reaction. The strong binding between Listeria and the Listeria antibody located at the hydrocarbon surface of the emulsions results in the tilting of the Janus structu

Formulation of intravenous carbamazepine emulsions by SolEmuls technology.

Oil in water (O/W) emulsions for parenteral nutrition can be employed as intravenous (i.v.) carriers for drugs that are poorly soluble in water and in oil by localising the drug in the interfacial lecithin layer, e.g. Amphotericin B emulsions. By now, the emulsion production required organic solvents. SolEmuls technology localises the drug in the interfacial layer by a solvent-free high-pressure homogenisation process. SolEmuls was applied to produce Carbamazepine emulsions at increasing drug concentrations from 0.5 to 10mg/ml. Drug powder and Lipofundin emulsion were mixed and homogenised at

All-aqueous emulsions stabilized by derivatized sporopollenin exine capsules.

Sporopollenin Exine Capsules (SpECs) were studied as particle stabilizers in all-aqueous emulsions of polyethylene glycol (PEG) and dextran (Dex) (8 % PEG: 6 % Dex). To investigate the role of particle interactions on stabilization mechanisms, SpECs were derivatized to provide positive charges through amidation, and neutral particles via acetylation. Emulsions with non-derivatized SpECs were stable only at pH 6 and 7 when negative charge was high (around -30 mV). Acetylated SpECs with low charge did not stabilize emulsions, while amidated SpECs stabilized the emulsions at all pH values, indepe

Engineering silica-stabilized Pickering emulsions as versatile protein carriers.

Oil-in-water (o/w) Pickering emulsions (PEs), featuring multi-leveled structures and particle-assembled interfaces, have emerged as promising platforms for biomedical applications, due to their superior stability and biocompatibility compared to conventional surfactant-stabilized emulsions. In this study, silica nanoparticles (SNPs) with tunable sizes, surface charges, and morphologies were synthesized and utilized as stabilizers for o/w PEs. Bovine serum albumin and varicella-zoster virus glycoprotein E were selected as model proteins to evaluate the feasibility of SNP-stabilized PEs as prote
