Toxic equine parkinsonism: an immunohistochemical study of 10 horses with nigropallidal encephalomalacia.

Chronic ingestion of yellow star thistle (Centaurea solstitialis) or Russian knapweed (Acroptilon repens) causes nigropallidal encephalomalacia (NPE) in horses with an abrupt onset of neurologic signs characterized by dystonia of lips and tongue, inability to prehend food, depression, and locomotor deficits. The objectives of this study were to reexamine the pathologic alterations of NPE and to conduct an immunohistochemistry study using antibodies to tyrosine hydroxylase and α-synuclein, to determine whether NPE brains show histopathologic features resembling those in human Parkinson disease.

Encephalomalacia from Physical Trauma in an Adult: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

INTRODUCTION: Encephalomalacia is the loss of brain tissue caused by an insult to the cerebral matter. Encephalomalacia is not frequently described in literature, with most focusing on infants and children, and rarely on the adult population. When described in the adult population, encephalomalacia is most commonly described following a cerebrovascular event. Reports of trauma-induced encephalomalacia in adults are uncommon, making such cases clinically significant. Despite some identified etiology in infants and children, our understanding of adult risk factors besides a cerebrovascular event

Multicystic encephalomalacia in an adult case of Lennox-Gastaut syndrome: a case report.

It is well known that multicystic encephalomalacia results in a severe neurological deficit and psychomotor retardation. The authors reported the case of a 30-year-old man with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome who had multicystic encephalomalacia in CT and MRI but whose neurological deficit was not serious. It is possible that the forceps delivery caused MCE and that a vaccination against Japanese encephalitis at the age of 9 triggered the Lennox-Gastaut syndrome.

Parieto-occipital encephalomalacia in neonatal hyperammonemia with ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency: A case report.

Urea cycle disorders are congenital metabolic disorders that often cause episodic hyperammonemia. Neuroimaging in episodic hyperammonemia demonstrates several patterns of brain injuries, including focal lesions in the lentiform nucleus, insula, cingulate gyrus, and perirolandic fissure, as well as diffuse cerebral edema. In cases with neonatal onset of hyperammonemia, similar lesions have also been reported. We herein report a boy with severe neonatal hyperammonemia caused by ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency. He presented with parieto-occipital encephalomalacia, which resembles severe neo

Histopathological study of encephalomalacia in neonatal calves and application of neuronal and axonal degeneration marker.

Five calves that had shown neurological symptoms within 9 days after birth were histopathologically diagnosed as encephalomalacia. Two calves showed bilateral laminar cerebrocortical necrosis and neuronal necrosis in the corpus striatum and hippocampus. Since the distributional pattern of the lesions was consistent with that of global ischemia in other species, the lesions were probably hypoxic/ischemic encephalopathy consistent with the history of dystocia and perinatal asphyxia. One calf also showed bilateral laminar cerebrocortical necrosis. However, the lesions were chronic ones, because t

Encephalomalacia with Enterococcus durans infection in the brain stem and cerebral hemisphere in chicks in Japan.

Fourteen chicks, 7-12 days old, that died or had neurological signs (depression, paralysis, torticollis, incoordination, and rolling) were investigated pathologically and microbiologically. Variably sized foci of malacia were present within the parenchyma of the brain stem (cerebral peduncle, optic lobe, and medulla oblongata) and the cerebral hemisphere. Capillary thrombosis with congestion and hemorrhage was frequently observed within the malacia lesions. Gram-positive cocci were recognized in the blood capillary of malacia lesions. Bacteriologically, Enterococcus durans was isolated from th

Neonatal multifocal encephalomalacia and other lesions in the brains of Georgia chicks: 1991-95.

Outbreaks of neonatal multifocal encephalomalacia with sepsis have been reported among flocks of very young chicks in Belgium, Scotland, and the United States. The purposes of the present study were to describe intralesional bacterial cocci in chicks with this type of encephalomalacia and to determine its incidence during 1991-95, and to determine the importance of this lesion with respect to the frequency of all other brain lesions/ diseases during the same time period. All laboratory records of broiler chickens examined at the Georgia Poultry Laboratory from Jan. 1, 1991, through Dec. 31, 19

[Topography and structure of secondary brain damage in edema associated with supratentorial foci of encephalomalacia].

The paper comprises 70 cases of extensive supratentorial infarctions. The topography and structure of secondary lesions occurring in the region of herniation and displacements caused by the coexisting brain edema were analysed. The extent of edema served as criterion in the division of the material into three groups in dependence on the occurrence of herniations and displacements. Most frequent was herniation of hippocampal uncus and most rare that of the cerebellar vermis. In group I showing no herniations selective necrosis was noted of neurons particularly sensitive to ischemia and anoxia,

Encephalomalacia in the distribution of the posterior cerebral and superior cerebellar arteries: the CT and radionuclide examination.

The case described concerns the clinical diagnosis of a vascular focus in the distribution of the posterior cerebral and superior cerebellar arteries. Up to now both carotid and vertebral angiography were required. Nontraumatic CT and radionuclide studies have allowed demonstration of the etiology of the disease in the occipital and cerebellar region without further neuroradiology examinations with contrast. Clinical diagnosis by using neuroradiological methods in the detection of infarct in the region of the posterior cerebral and cerebellar artery is seldom observed. The case of a vascular f

Vagus nerve stimulation for pharmacoresistant epilepsy secondary to encephalomalacia: A single-center retrospective study.

OBJECTIVE: Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is an adjunctive treatment for pharmacoresistant epilepsy. Encephalomalacia is one of the most common MRI findings in the preoperative evaluation of patients with pharmacoresistant epilepsy. This is the first study that aimed to determine the effectiveness of VNS for pharmacoresistant epilepsy secondary to encephalomalacia and evaluate the potential predictors of VNS effectiveness. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the seizure outcomes of VNS with at least 1 year of follow-up in all patients with pharmacoresistant epilepsy secondary to encephalomala

[Multiple cerebral infarcts with resulting multicystic encephalomalacia in a premature infant with Enterobacter sakazakii meningitis].

Enterobacter sakazakii is an uncommon cause of neonatal meningitis. The prognosis of newborns with meningitis due to Enterobacter sakazakii is poor, the fatality rate is reported as high as 50%. Survivors usually have severe neurologic complications. Most computed tomography (CT) findings were low density lesions of white matter and cortex suggesting infarctions which underwent cystic degeneration. We present one premature baby with meningitis due to Enterobacter sakazakii and large bilateral regions of hypo- and hyperdensity suggesting massive hemorrhagic and nonhemorrhagic intracerebral infa

Distinguishing multicystic from focal encephalomalacia on delayed MRI in children with term hypoxic ischemic injury.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: To define cystic patterns resulting from term hypoxic ischemic injury (HII) on delayed Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and determine associated HII patterns and lesions that reflect the severity of injury, from a database of African children with cerebral palsy. METHODS: Retrospective review of 1175 children with cerebral palsy due to term HII diagnosed on late MRI, identifying those with cystic changes. These were classified as multicystic or (multi-) focal-cystic, and were evaluated for associated injuries-thalami, basal ganglia, hippocampi, cerebellum, and presence

[Full-contact and dissecting aneurysm of the thrombosed left internal carotid artery associated with encephalomalacia].

Full-contact, a sport which is becoming more and more popular in our society as a means of self-defence, is not without its hazards. We describe the case of a 32-year-old man who, shortly after an intensive practice match, presented symptoms consistent with cerebral damage which resulted in his death within three days. The main pathological findings were confined to the left internal carotid artery, which presented a dissecting aneurysm as a result of rupture of its intima with thrombosis of its lumen. The thrombus extended as far as the intracranial portion of the artery, resulting in massive

Experimental Imaging Study of Encephalomalacia Fluid-Attenuated Inversion Recovery (FLAIR) Hyperintense Lesions in Posttraumatic Epilepsy.

This study introduced new MRI techniques such as neurite orientation dispersion and density imaging (NODDI); NODDI applies a three-compartment tissue model to multishell DWI data that allows the examination of both the intra- and extracellular properties of white matter tissue. This, in turn, enables us to distinguish the two key aspects of axonal pathology-the packing density of axons in the white matter and the spatial organization of axons (orientation dispersion (OD)). NODDI is used to detect possible abnormalities of posttraumatic encephalomalacia fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAI

Multiple cystic encephalomalacia of infancy: computed tomographic findings in two cases with associated intracerebral calcification.

Two initially healthy infants developed acute encephalopathic illnesses characterized by stupor, seizures, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) erythrocytic and monocytic pleocytosis, increased CSF protein, and decreased CSF glucose and progression to chronic decerebration. In one case, herpes simplex virus was recovered from cutaneous lesions. The initial computed tomography (CT) scan revealed widespread subcortical increased attenuation with further increase after contrast medium injection and patchy areas of decreased attenuation in the deep cerebral white matter. Subsequent CT scans demonstrated prog

Cystic Encephalomalacia in a Young Woman After Cardiac Arrest Due to Diabetic Ketoacidosis and Thyroid Storm.

Cystic encephalomalacia is commonly reported in neonates with prenatal or perinatal hypoxic events. It is rarely observed in adults. A 25-year-old woman with a history of type 1 diabetes mellitus and hyperthyroidism presented to the emergency department with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and a thyroid storm. She sustained cardiac arrest due to ventricular fibrillation and subsequently developed hypoxic encephalopathy. Initial brain computed tomography showed no significant findings; however, follow-up magnetic resonance imaging three months later revealed cystic encephalomalacia in the bilateral
