Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is an acute monophasic inflammatory and demyelinating disease of the central nervous system (CNS) occurring days to weeks after a virus infection or vaccination. Nephropathia epidemica (NE) is a haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome caused by Puumala virus, with endemic regions in Europe, especially Scandinavia and Western Russia. We describe a case of severe nephropathia epidemica requiring dialysis, followed by severe CNS symptoms caused by ADEM. To our best knowledge this is the first case in the literature in which NE caused ADEM.

The actual incidence of central nervous system complications with varicella ranges from 0.1 to 0.7% in several series and the time interval between the rash and the type of neurological manifestation varies widely. Cerebellar ataxia and hypotonia are the most common neurological abnormalities associated with varicella. We present a report on a 6-year-old girl with an unusual course of disease finally presenting a probable diagnosis of acute disseminated encephalitis.

An 8-year-old boy developed acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, 2 weeks after an episode of acute rheumatic fever. The disease was succesfully treated with high-dose methylprednisolone. A wide range of neurologic disorders is associated with streptococcal disease. Poststreptococcal acute disseminated encephalomyelitis was previously reported in children, but to our knowledge, this is the first case report of rheumatic fever complicated by acute disseminated encephalomyelitis. This case supports the hypothesis that rheumatic fever, a late complication of streptococcal infections, may be assoc

Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is a monophasic condition characterized by inflammation of the central nervous system. Besides multiple sclerosis, optic neuropathy, acute transverse myelitis, and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder, ADEM is a primary inflammatory demyelinating disorder of the central nervous system. It is estimated that approximately three-quarters of cases of encephalomyelitis occur after an infection or immunization, where the onset of neurological disease is coincident with a febrile event. Here, we report an 80-year-old woman with coronavirus disease pneumon

Dengue is the most common arboviral disease affecting many countries worldwide. An RNA virus from the flaviviridae family, dengue has four antigenically distinct serotypes (DEN-1-DEN-4). Neurological involvement in dengue can be classified into dengue encephalopathy immune-mediated syndromes, encephalitis, neuromuscular or dengue muscle dysfunction and neuro-ophthalmic involvement. Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is an immune mediated acute demyelinating disorder of the central nervous system following recent infection or vaccination. This monophasic illness is characterised by mul

BACKGROUND: Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is an inflammatory, demyelinating disease occurring several weeks after viral infection. Enteroviruses have been described as potential triggers of ADEM, but the closely related parechoviruses have not. The objective of the study is to assess the prevalence and disease presentation of ADEM after parechovirus infection in a syndromic surveillance program for pediatric infection/inflammation of the central nervous system (CNS).
METHODS: The surveillance was conducted at the Charité Department of Pediatrics in Berlin, Germany, from November

Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is an uncommon monophasic idiopathic inflammatory demyelinating disease. Available diagnostic criteria do not reliably distinguish it from first presentations of relapsing diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS) and neuromyelitis optica (NMO). In this article, we review current concepts about ADEM and what distinguishes it from other idiopathic inflammatory demyelinating disease, and we highlight controversial aspects and diagnostic problems. We review pathological differences between ADEM and MS in terms of their utility in the diagnosis of ADEM. F

A case of acute disseminated encephalomyelitis in 13-year-old boy associated with enterovirus is described. The patient had symptoms of severe headache and photophobia for 2 days. Diagnosis was made on the basis of diffuse high intensity white matter lesions in the left frontoparietal region seen on magnetic resonance imaging, and positive enterovirus polymerase chain reaction in cerebrospinal fluid. His symptoms improved substantially without specific therapy, and he recovered without neurologic sequelae.

A 24-year-old Japanese man showed neurological disturbances 2 weeks after complete recovery from Plasmodium vivax infection. Magnetic resonance (MR) images of the brain showed multiple high-intensity spotty lesions in the left cerebral cortex and subcortex. Cerebrospinal fluid examination, including polymerase chain reaction analysis for viruses, revealed no sign of active infection. Repeated blood smears were negative for malaria. We diagnosed acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) following Plasmodium vivax malaria from the clinical course and MR images. ADEM should be regarded as one o

We report here a case involving a 14-year-old boy who developed acute disseminated encephalomyelitis following live rubella vaccination. The patient became febrile and began to experience nuchal pain 16 days after the immunization. By 22 days after immunization, he experienced difficulty in walking. By 24 days, he had developed tetraparesis with retention of urine, and total sensory loss below the Th1 dermatomal level. He was febrile at this point and showed nuchal rigidity and Lhermitte's sign. Cerebrospinal fluid examination revealed elevated cell counts, protein level, and myelin basic prot

Three children ranging in age from 2 to 5 years with acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) were successfully treated with high-dose intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG). Their symptoms were somnolence, fever, headache, vomiting, and resting tremor. In all of these patients, it was difficult to distinguish the condition from viral encephalitis before analyzing the myelin basic protein. ADEM was diagnosed because of increased levels of myelin basic protein in their cerebrospinal fluid and abnormal high-signal intensity on T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging. All patients were given IVIG at

We describe three cases of acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (an immune-mediated inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system) and their histology, showing different radiological features. One appearance is a few ring-shaped enhancing lesions, which are found predominantly in the supratentorial white matter, the other is solid disseminated lesions.

Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is an inflammatory demyelinating disease that typically occurs following a viral infection or vaccination. The incidence of ADEM following vaccination has fallen since the introduction of non-neural rabies vaccine and very few cases have been reported due to pure chick embryo derived rabies vaccine (PCERV). Here we are reporting a rare case of probable post vaccinial ADEM.

BACKGROUND: It is important to examine the risk of Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) after vaccination.
METHODS: We conducted a nested case-control study between January 2011 and December 2015. Four controls per case were matched for age, gender, address. An independent expert committee validated the diagnoses of cases and controls. Data on vaccinations were obtained from computerized vaccination records. The analyses were conducted with the use of conditional logistic regression.
RESULTS: The analyses include 272 cases of ADEM and 1096 controls. No increase in the risk of ADEM was

Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is a relatively rare, post-inflammatory, immune-mediated demyelinating central nervous system disease that is predominantly reported in pediatric populations. Following the emergence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, cases of ADEM are being reported following infection with this virus. Our case report describes a male patient in his early 40s who developed severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) that rapidly progressed to a critical disease requiring invasive mechanical ventilation and high positive end-expiratory pressure, which
