BACKGROUND: The first symptoms of previously undiagnosed congenital heart disease may become apparent during pregnancy. It is important to recognize structural heart lesions since they require additional monitoring during the prenatal, peripartum, and postpartum periods and are associated with increased maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality.
CASE: We report a case of a new diagnosis of an endocardial cushion defect in an otherwise healthy woman in her third trimester whose presenting complaint was dyspnea in the left lateral decubitus position.
CONCLUSION: We located only one other case

A review of 155 cases of surgically repaired endocardial cushion defects revealed 16 patients (10%) with additional unusual mitral valve abnormalities that complicated the surgical procedure. Atrioventricular septal defect occurs with a high prevalence in both human Down syndrome (trisomy 21) and the animal model for this disorder, murine trisomy 16 (Ts-16). Surgical correction of a case of double outlet right ventricle accompanied with complete endocardial cushion defect was completed successfully. No other complicated anomaly existed in this case. Correction was done by using two patch method. The patch for VSD was designed to be comma-like shape. For ensuring the left ventricular out tract, the patch was sutured with bulging at the circumference of the aortic orifice and the suture line of the patch with atrio-ventricular valve was deviated to the right. There was no stenosis in the left ventricular out tract and tricuspid valve.
