Dysbaric osteonecrosis (caisson disease of bone): are active oxygen species and the endocrine system responsible, and can control of the production of free radicals and their reaction products confer protection?

The development of osteonecrosis after exposure to altered air pressures is consistent with cellular injury brought about by active oxygen species. The syndrome is considered to arise as a result of an unusual combination of circumstances in which hyperoxia itself, together with the additive responses of the endocrine system to hyperoxia, hypothermia and exertion, each appear to play a part; the net result is thought to increase the mitochondrial generation of superoxide. It is suggested that effective prophylaxis may be possible primarily by establishing a nutritional status that is adequate

[Liver involvement in endocrine diseases].

As a secondary endocrine organ, the liver is closely related to the endocrine system. Liver involvement is not uncommon in endocrine diseases, such as hyper/hypothyroidism, diabetes, dysfunction of adrenal and gonadal. It can be manifested in a variety of forms, including hepatocyte injury (elevated transaminase), bile duct injury (cholestasis), hepatocyte steatosis, vascular injury and liver tumor. Direct and indirect liver injury caused by abnormal hormone levels and side effects of drugs for the treatment of endocrine diseases are common pathogenesis. In addition, endocrine diseases can be

Endocrine Diseases and the Liver: An Update.

The endocrine system is a complex interconnected system of organs that control corporeal processes and function. Primary endocrine organs are involved in hormonal production and secretion but rely on a bevy of signals from the hypothalamic-pituitary axis and secondary endocrine organs, such as the liver. In turn, proper hepatic function is maintained through hormonal signaling. Thus, the endocrine system and liver are codependent, and diseases affecting either organs can lead to alterations in function within their counterparts. This article explores the hepato-endocrine relationship, includin

Ultrasound and ultrasound-related techniques in endocrine diseases.

Ultrasound examination has become essential to evaluate morphology and size of several endocrine glands and detect the presence of lesions within these organs. Nevertheless, with the recent advances of ultrasound technology, we have opportunity to correlate the echostructure of thyroid, ovary, testis, parathyroids, etc. to their function. Thus, the ultrasound systems are in-office essential instruments for many clinical specialists. Herein we presented the most updated information about the use of ultrasound in specific endocrine-related issues, such as thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal gland, and

Endocrine disruptions in thermal injuries: exploring immune system interactions.

Burn injuries are among the most devastating disruptors of human physiology, provoking systemic disturbances unmatched by nearly any other form of pathology, yet they remain critically underappreciated. Each year, approximately 8.4 million people sustain burn injuries worldwide, leading to 110,000 deaths and countless cases of long-term disability. Beyond the immediate tissue damage, burns trigger a uniquely severe and persistent hypermetabolic response that, if not effectively managed, cascades into widespread dysfunction across multiple organ systems, driving morbidity and, in many cases, mo

Endocrine circuitry in autism spectrum disorders: A systematic review of mechanistic insights and clinical implications.

The increasing global prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnoses-largely driven by heightened awareness, evolving diagnostic criteria, and improved detection-has intensified efforts to elucidate its complex neurobiological underpinnings, although the true change in occurrence remains uncertain. While much attention has been paid to genetic and neurodevelopmental factors, emerging evidence highlights the crucial role of the endocrine system in modulating social, cognitive, and behavioral outcomes associated with ASD. To systematically review the existing literature on endocrine dysf

Pancreatic endocrine and exocrine signaling and crosstalk in physiological and pathological status.

The pancreas, an organ with dual functions, regulates blood glucose levels through the endocrine system by secreting hormones such as insulin and glucagon. It also aids digestion through the exocrine system by secreting digestive enzymes. Complex interactions and signaling mechanisms between the endocrine and exocrine functions of the pancreas play a crucial role in maintaining metabolic homeostasis and overall health. Compelling evidence indicates direct and indirect crosstalk between the endocrine and exocrine parts, influencing the development of diseases affecting both. From a developmenta

DeepGP: An Integrated Deep Learning Method for Endocrine Disease Gene Prediction Using Omics Data.

Endocrinology is the study focusing on hormones and their actions. Hormones are known as chemical messengers, released into the blood, that exert functions through receptors to make an influence in the target cell. The capacity of the mammalian organism to perform as a whole unit is made possible based on two principal control mechanisms, the nervous system and the endocrine system. The endocrine system is essential in regulating growth and development, tissue function, metabolism, and reproductive processes. Endocrine diseases such as diabetes mellitus, Grave's disease, polycystic ovary syndr

Electrocardiographic changes in the most frequent endocrine disorders associated with cardiovascular diseases. Review of the literature.

Car- diovascular abnormalities associated with endocrine diseases are often frequent and due to complex relationships between endocrine glands (with internal secretion) and cardiovascular system (heart and vessels). Certain hormones secreted by the endocrine glands (particularly the thyroid and pituitary gland) excesses or deficiencies, are involved in morphogenesis, growth processes and activity regulation of cardiovascular system, most often in connection with the autonomic nervous system. There are also a lot of electrocardiographic changes caused by hormonal disorders that requires differe

Overview of structural and functional lesions in endocrine organs of animals.

The objective of this review is to summarize the pathogenic mechanisms responsible for perturbations of endocrine function and development of structural lesions that result in important diseases in domestic and laboratory animals. For each major category, several specific disease problems have been selected to illustrate the functional and morphologic lesions that are characteristic for either a naturally occurring endocrinopathy or endocrine disturbances induced by the administration of large doses of xenobiotic chemicals. The major pathogenic mechanisms responsible for disruption of endocrin

Multi-omics Investigations in Endocrine Systems and Their Clinical Implications.

Innovative techniques such as the "omics" can be a powerful tool for the understanding of intracellular pathways involved in homeostasis maintenance and identification of new potential therapeutic targets against endocrine-metabolic disorders. Over the last decades, proteomics has been extensively applied in the study of a wide variety of human diseases, including those involving the endocrine system. Among the most endocrine-related disorders investigated by proteomics in humans are diabetes mellitus and thyroid, pituitary, and reproductive system disorders. In diabetes, proteins implicated i

Endocrine and neuroendocrine cytopathology.

Cytology is an easily-accessible, cost-effective, and safe procedure for the initial evaluation of most endocrine/neuroendocrine lesions. Both fine-needle aspiration cytology and exfoliative cytology have shown good sensitivity and specificity in detecting endocrine/neuroendocrine benign proliferations and malignancies. Thanks to its utility for early diagnosis, cytology has contributed to the decline in mortality of endocrine/neuroendocrine neoplasms. The endocrine system comprises different endocrine organs, such as the thyroid, adrenal glands, paraganglia, parathyroid, pancreas, hypothalamu
