The persistence of microbial agents in foods, especially spore forming bacteria is one of the most significant challenges to food preservation and safety, undermining product quality, shelf life, and consumer health. The use of traditional control methods, including thermal processing and chemical preservatives, are increasingly limited by consumer demands for minimally processed foods, and the emergence of resistant microbial strains. Advances have been made in the use of probiotics like lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and their biometabolites like bacteriocins in food processing and preservation,

Anthrax is a zoonosis which is particularly prevalent in cattle, goats and sheep and is caused by Bacillus anthracis, a Gram-positive spore forming aerobic microorganism. The endospores can survive outside of the body for many decades. The natural form of anthrax has a cutaneous, pulmonary and intestinal form. The pulmonary form can be rapidly fatal but is difficult to recognise due to an initially non-specific, flu-like clinical picture. As a result of spores being inhaled, a mediastinal lymphadenitis arises from which a systemic disease develops with a violent toxaemia, damage to the vascula

Clostridium botulinum, a polyphyletic Gram-positive taxon of bacteria, is classified purely by their ability to produce botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT). BoNT is the primary virulence factor and the causative agent of botulism. A potentially fatal disease, botulism is classically characterized by a symmetrical descending flaccid paralysis, which is left untreated can lead to respiratory failure and death. Botulism cases are classified into three main forms dependent on the nature of intoxication; foodborne, wound and infant. The BoNT, regarded as the most potent biological substance known, is a zin

Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs), which are produced on a large scale, pose a potential threat to various environments because they can interact with the microbial populations found in them. Bacteria that are widespread in soil, water, and plant material include the Bacillus cereus group, which plays an important role in biodegradation and the nutrient cycle and is a major factor determining ecological balance. This group includes, among others, the foodborne pathogen B. cereus sensu stricto (herein referred to as B. cereus). The aim of this study was a comprehensive assessment of the effects

The formation of endospores has been considered the unique survival and transmission mode of sporulating Firmicutes due to the exceptional resistance and persistence of this bacterial form. However, nonsporulated bacteria (Spo-) were reported at the early stages following the death of a host infected with Bacillus thuringiensis, an entomopathogenic sporulating bacterium. Here, we investigated the characteristics of the bacterial population in the late stages of an infection in the B. thuringiensis/Galleria mellonella infection model. Using fluorescent reporters and molecular markers coupled to

Peptidoglycan synthesis is an essential driver of bacterial growth and division. The final steps of this crucial process involve the polymerization of glycan strands by shape, elongation, division, and sporulation (SEDS) family glycosyltransferases and the cross-linking of peptide cross-bridges by class B penicillin-binding proteins (bPBP). While many bacteria use distinct bPBPs to perform specialized roles during a given cellular process, some bPBPs can play redundant roles, particularly in the presence of certain cell wall stresses. Our understanding of these compensatory mechanisms, however

The ability to form botulinum neurotoxin is restricted to six phylogenetically and physiologically distinct bacteria (Clostridium botulinum Groups I-IV and some strains of C. baratii and C. butyricum). The botulinum neurotoxin is the most potent toxin known, with as little as 30-100 ng potentially fatal, and is responsible for botulism, a severe neuroparalytic disease that affects humans, animals, and birds. In order to minimize the hazards presented by the botulinum neurotoxin-forming clostridia, it is necessary to extend understanding of the biology of these bacteria. Analyses of recently av

Iron toxicity is a major constraint for rice production, particularly in lowland ecosystems where reduced iron (Fe[II]) accumulates due to activities by iron-reducing bacteria (IRB). This study investigated the dominant cultivable IRB strains in three iron-rich rice-growing areas of Burkina Faso: Moussodougou, Tiefora, and Kou Valley. Soil Fe(II) concentrations and IRB abundance were quantified using colorimetric and most probable number (MPN) methods to highlight the process of Fe(II) generation. Bacteria were isolated and characterized based on morphological traits (cell shape, Gram staining

Common sterilization techniques for labile and sensitive materials have far-reaching applications in medical, pharmaceutical, and industrial fields. Heat inactivation, chemical treatment, and radiation are established methods to inactivate microorganisms, but pose a threat to humans and the environment and can damage susceptible materials or products. Recent studies have demonstrated that cold low-pressure plasma (LPP) treatment is an efficient alternative to common sterilization methods, as LPP's levels of radicals, ions, (V)UV-radiation, and exposure to an electromagnetic field can be modula

Gram-positive, thermophilic, endospore-forming, yellow, rod-shaped bacteria, D401aT and D404, were isolated from soil samples of a hot spring in Dikili, Izmir. They can synthesize silver nanoparticles and biotechnologically important thermostable alpha-amylase, alpha-glucosidase and nitrate reductase, which were also confirmed by in silico analyses. 16S rRNA gene phylogenetic analysis revealed that D401aT was most closely related to D404 (99.9%) and had less than 98.9% similarity to Anoxybacillus flavithermus DSM 2641T, Anoxybacillus thermarum DSM 7141T, Anoxybacillus mongoliensis DSM 19169T a

Two Gram-stain-positive, facultatively anaerobic, motile, endospore-forming, rod-shaped bacteria, designated CLL-3-40T and CLL-7-23, were isolated from coastal sediment sampled in Changyi, Shandong Province, PR China. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that these strains were related to the genus Bacillus and close to six type strains of species within the Bacillus licheniformis group. In phenotypic characterization tests, strain CLL-3-40T could grow at 15-50 °C (optimum, 37 °C) and in media with pH 5-9 (optimum pH 7.0), and tolerate up to 12 % (w/v) NaCl. The fer

Bacillus anthracis, the bacteria that causes anthrax, a disease that primarily affects herbivorous animals, is a soil borne endospore-forming microbe. Environmental distribution of viable spores determines risky landscapes for herbivore exposure and subsequent anthrax outbreaks. Spore survival and longevity depends on suitable conditions in its environment. Anthrax is endemic in Queen Elizabeth Protected Area in western Uganda. Periodic historical outbreaks with significant wildlife losses date to 1950s, but B. anthracis ecological niche in the ecosystem is poorly understood. This study used t

Studies of indoor bioaerosols conducted in Central and Eastern European countries, as a result of the scarcity of funding, mostly do not attain the level presented by similar studies in Northern America and Western Europe. For socio-economic reasons, most of the intense studies on indoor bioaerosols in Central and Eastern European countries were carried out in industrial facilities and have contributed significantly to occupational health science. In contrast, until recently, insufficient of studies have been conducted on bioaerosols of residential and communal premises (dwellings, offices, sc

Bacillus anthracis is a potent biowarfare agent, able to be highly lethal. The bacteria dwell in the soil of certain regions, as natural flora. Bacteriophages or their lytic enzymes, endolysins, may be an alternative for antibiotics and other antibacterials to fight this pathogen in infections and to minimize environmental contamination with anthrax endospores. Upon screening environmental samples from various regions in Poland, we isolated three new siphophages, J5a, F16Ba, and z1a, specific for B. anthracis. They represent new species related to historical anthrax phages Gamma, Cherry, and F

UNLABELLED: Bacterial endospores are encased in a thick layer of specialized peptidoglycan called the cortex that is essential for core dehydration and heat resistance. Spore germination and outgrowth require cortex degradation by enzymes that are deposited in the spore during sporulation. How these enzymes are held inactive during dormancy and activated during germination remains poorly understood. In Bacillus subtilis and many other endospore-forming bacteria, one of the lytic enzymes, SleB, is encoded in an operon with its putative regulator YpeB. The two proteins depend on each other for s

Bacillus anthracis and the emerging pathogen Bacillus cereus biovar anthracis (Bcbva) are causative agents of the lethal disease anthrax. Their ability to form highly resistant endospores enables them to persist in the environment, posing significant threats to wild herbivores, livestock, and also humans globally, especially considering their potential use as bioweapons. Despite the importance of these pathogens, the exact mechanisms underlying host infection remain poorly understood. Notably, both require relatively high infectious doses to cause disease. Proposed transmission routes include

We report the results of an interdisciplinary collaboration formed to assess the sterilizing capabilities of the One Atmosphere Uniform Glow Discharge Plasma (OAUGDP). This newly-invented source of glow discharge plasma (the fourth state of matter) is capable of operating at atmospheric pressure in air and other gases, and of providing antimicrobial active species to surfaces and workpieces at room temperature as judged by viable plate counts. OAUGDP exposures have reduced log numbers of bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, and endospores from Bacillus stearothermophilus and B

CONTEXT: Anthrax is a rare disease cause by Bacillus anthracis, a Gram-positive, rod-shaped endospore-forming capsuled bacterium. Anthrax is manifest in three primary forms: cutaneous, respiratory, and gastrointestinal. Cutaneous anthrax accounts for approximately 95% of all cases of anthrax in humans.
OBJECTIVE: In the present study, we evaluated the clinical diagnosis and treatment of cutaneous anthrax, a rare disease that nonetheless remains a serious healthcare problem in developing countries.
METHODS: The complete medical records of patients diagnosed with cutaneous anthrax between Janu
