The nematode Capillaria plica is an ubiquitous parasite of the urinary tract of Canidae and Felidae. It causes a wide spectrum of clinical symptoms, ranging from asymptomatic infections to urinary bladder inflammation, pollacisuria, dysuria, and hematuria. Foxes serve as reservoir hosts and are considered to be a potential source of infection for companion and hunting dogs as well as domestic cats which acquire the infection by ingestion of earthworms which are the intermediate hosts. Despite its importance, epidemiological studies on this parasite are scarce and almost entirely lacking altoge

During a study conducted between 2003 and 2005 on the diet of Nile crocodiles in Botswana, two young adult nematodes, one male and one female, belonging to the genus Eustrongylides Jägerskiöld, 1909 were recovered from the stomach contents of one of these animals. The caudal bursa of the male is present and the ejaculatory duct could be identified, but the spicule could not be seen. The vulva of the female has opened and the anus is situated on a terminal protruberance. Measurements and drawings of these specimens are provided, together with some data on the occurrence and life-cycles of membe

Dioctophymosis is caused by Dioctophyme renale, a nematode that primarily affects the right kidney of domestic and wild mammals. This report describes the antemortem diagnosis, surgical treatment, and rehabilitation of a free-ranging lesser grison (Galictis cuja) infected with the parasite. An adult male weighing 1.85 kg was admitted after being struck by a vehicle and showed signs consistent with traumatic brain injury. During hospitalization, fecal parasitological examination revealed eggs consistent with D. renale, along with other parasitic structures. Urinalysis revealed mild proteinuria,

This study aimed to verify the occurrence of Dioctophyme renale in stray dogs in the city of Pelotas, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The Laboratório Regional de Diagnóstico of the Universidade Federal de Pelotas received 146 wandering dogs for necropsy, sent by the City Hall of Pelotas from March 2012 to January 2020. Among the necropsied animals, seventeen dogs (11.64%) were diagnosed with dioctophymosis. Among these dogs, 11 were parasitized with one specimen in the right kidney, two dogs presented two specimens in the right kidney, and in other two dogs, the parasites were in th

BACKGROUND: Diagnosis of intestinal capillariasis depending on microscopic detection of parasitic stages is of low sensitivity, especially in cases with low worm burden. There is a necessity to develop sensitive and specific diagnostic tools of capillariasis for early treatment to avoid complications. Western blot (WB) technique showed promising results for antigen recognition patterns in several parasitic infections.
AIM OF THE STUDY: This study is directed to identify and evaluate relevant proteins of intestinal capillariasis crude worm antigens using WB immunodiagnosis.

Zebrafish in research facilities are frequently infected with capillarids. Since the health status (as a nonprotocol source of variation) of zebrafish can affect the validity of experiments, it is important to develop therapies for common zebrafish diseases. Regarding the likelihood of (1) the development of drug resistance and (2) the loss of the efficacy of a drug for laboratory zebrafish, the availability of alternatives for treatment is of direct importance. The efficacy of five dewormers from the same or different therapeutic groups was assessed in the current study. The exposure to each

This study reports a case of parasitism by Dioctophyme renale in a supernumerary kidney and abdominal cavity of a female cat in Brazil. The three-year-old cat of indeterminate breed presented abdominal distension and was taken to the University of Contestado Veterinary Hospital in Canoinhas, state of Santa Catarina, since the owner suspected pregnancy. An ultrasound scan did not confirm pregnancy but revealed parasitism in the kidney. This case is worth reporting because domestic cats are rarely hosts of this nematode species.

Two adult rock partridges raised in a city zoo were examined parasitologically and pathologically. Two distinctive eggs resembling those of Capillaria and Heterakis were detected in the feces. At necropsy, a markedly-dilated duodenum with severe catarrhal exudates, containing adult worms of Capillaria sp. and Heterakis sp. in the cecum, was observed. Male Capillaria had the cloacal aperture extended almost terminally with a small bursal lobe and an unsheathed spicule with transverse folds without spines. Female Capillaria had a vulva that was slightly prominent and slightly posterior to the un

Infections by the nematodes Enterobius, Trichuris, Capillaria, and hookworm are some of the most widespread gastrointestinal infections worldwide. This article is designed not only to provide an overview of the different parasites in terms of epidemiology, clinical manifestation, and disease but also to highlight particular areas of intensive research activity that are providing new insights into both the biology of the host-parasite relationship and possible new approaches to infection management for the future.

PURPOSE: Eucoleus aerophilus (syn. Capillaria aerophila) (Nematoda: Capillariidae) is a common endoparasite of free-ranging canids. In zoological gardens, reports on E. aerophilus-infections are scarce. We here present a case series of E. aerophilus infections in zoo-held arctic foxes with the aim to provide assistance for zoo veterinarians for future cases.
METHODS: A total of five zoo-born and -housed arctic foxes (Vulpes lagopus) were presented with coughing periods and strong phlegm, four of them showing rapid deteriorations at different time points including dyspnoea leading to death. Co

A 9-month old, female, stray dog was rescued and conducted to a university veterinary hospital. Moderate anemia was observed and abdominal ultrasound revealed pancreatitis. Right kidney was not visualized due to intestinal gas. Urinalysis was normal. Castration was performed three weeks later. Before discharge, abdominal ultrasound was performed for internal sutures examination. A cyst-like structure was present in the right retroperitoneal space with what appeared to be tubular worms inside it, not observed in previous evaluation. An ectopic dioctophymosis diagnosis was made. Two female Dioct

BACKGROUND: Intestinal capillariasis, caused by Capillaria philippinensis, is an uncommon but potentially fatal parasitic infection associated with the consumption of raw or undercooked freshwater fish. Despite its sporadic occurrence, its clinical severity and diagnostic challenges warrant a comprehensive synthesis of available evidence. This systematic review aimed to summarize the geographic distribution, risk factors, clinical manifestations, diagnostic approaches, and treatment outcomes of human intestinal capillariasis.
METHODS: A systematic search of six electronic databases (PubMed, S

Gastrointestinal and cardiopulmonary nematodes are frequently detected in dogs worldwide, posing a potential zoonotic risk. Some parasites, such as Capillaria aerophila and Capillaria boehmi, are often less considered being misdiagnosed with other trichurids. Here, we evaluated the occurrence of Capillaria spp. as well as of other endoparasites in hunting dogs from Basilicata region, Southern Italy. Individual faecal samples were collected from hunting dogs (n = 443) and examined by Mini-FLOTAC® flotation method. Additionally, 49 of the above samples were evaluated by the Baermann-Wetzel techn

This report presents a case of parasitism by the renal worm Dioctophyme renale, diagnosed in the right kidney of a domestic dog. An adult female dog, mixed breed, was initially treated for a snakebite. After ultrasound, a significant number of Dioctophyme renale parasites were observed in the right kidney (R.K). The urine test revealed a significant number of Dioctophyme renale eggs without any other abnormalities. A nephrectomy was successfully performed, and the dog showed an excellent recovery after surgery. In most cases, parasitism by D. renale in domestic dogs is discovered by chance or

Dioctophyme renale, the giant kidney worm, is a parasitic nematode of domestic and wild carnivores, occasionally infecting humans. While widely reported in South America, it has not been documented in Central America before. A 3-year-old French bulldog presented with leukocytosis, thrombocytopenia, azotemia, pyrexia, vomiting, and apathy. Abdominal ultrasound revealed tubular structures in the right kidney, and urine sediment contained nematode eggs. Euthanasia was performed after severe health complications, and a necropsy was done. The right kidney revealed severe hydronephrosis with parench

Pearsonema (syn. Capillaria) plica is a nematode that resides in the urinary bladder of canids, felids and mustelids (definitive hosts) and is classified in the same class as Trichuris spp. Epidemiological and clinical data on Pearsonema plica infection in domestic animals are limited. The nematode has an indirect lifecycle that involves earthworms as intermediate hosts. A six-year-old crossbred dog from Greece, presented a history of intermittent pollakiuria and hematuria. At urine analysis, P. plica eggs were found in the urine sediment. The dog was successfully treated with a double dose of
