Two cases are reported of neonatal meningitis caused by Enterobacter cloacae. The two patients are alive; one is perfectly well, the other resulted in hydrocephalus. Both children came from the same neonatal Unit where the were given phototherapy. The importance of nosocomial infections is outlined and different aspects related to the etiology, the environment and the host (particularly immunologic deficits) are briefly reviewed.

This study investigated the clinical and genomic characteristics of Enterobacter cloacae complex (ECC) and Klebsiella aerogenes bloodstream infections (BSIs) in pediatric patients. A total of 115 BSI episodes (ECC: 86, K. aerogenes: 29) from 110 children hospitalized between 2011 and 2024 were retrospectively analyzed. Whole-genome sequencing was performed on available isolates to determine species, sequence types, and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes. Clinical characteristics, antibiotic usage, and outcomes were compared between groups. Patients with K. aerogenes BSI were younger and more

BACKGROUND: Enterobacter cloacae is increasingly prevalent and resistant to multiple antibiotics, making it a significant pathogen in healthcare settings with high mortality rates. However, its pathogenic mechanisms are not fully understood.
RESULTS: In this study, we explored the role of nagZ in regulating the virulence of E. cloacae and its potential as a therapeutic target. Our research showed that pathogenic strains of E. cloacae express higher levels of nagZ than colonizing strains, particularly in simulated infection environments. Deleting nagZ significantly reduced E. cloacae virulence

Previous studies have shown decreased microbial diversity in astronaut gut microbiomes during spaceflight, raising potential health concerns. Enterobacter cloacae, a commensal member of the human gastrointestinal tract microbiota, has the potential to cause opportunistic infections in immunocompromised patients. However, little is known about how E. cloacae cells adapt to extreme environments such as microgravity, and whether this bacterium is of medical concern for astronauts during long-term spaceflight missions, as astronaut immune systems are compromised by microgravity. To this end, E. cl

Over a 3-month period, five cases of Enterobacter cloacae bacteraemia occurred on our neonatal unit. In at least three of these, isolation of the organism coincided with clinical deterioration and evidence of sepsis. In one case, the same strain was isolated from an abscess on the neonate's forearm. The isolates had identical sensitivity patterns being resistant to all beta-lactams tested except imipenem. The extended time course of the infections made cross-infection an unlikely explanation. Moreover, close questioning of the staff and observation of their practices with regard to blood cultu

Enterobacter cloacae is a troublesome pathogen causing refractory infections of the lower respiratory tract, urethra and abdominal cavity, endocarditis, osteomyelitis, and neonatal septicemia. It is prone to developing resistance to ordinary antibiotics and has brought a serious problem to clinical treatment. An artful synergistic combination of an antibacterial natural product allicin and a newly isolated bacteriophage, named BD523, was constructed herein. This combination significantly lowered effective dosage of allicin and effectually overcame bacterial drug-resistance. We experimentally e

A potential role of group IIC-attC introns in integron gene cassette formation, that is, the way in which they could provide the attC sequence essential for recombination, has been proposed. Group IIC introns usually target the attC site of gene cassettes and more specifically their inverse core. Here we characterized a novel group IIC intron targeting the core site of the aadA1 gene cassette attC site (aadA1-qacEΔ1 gene cassette junction) from enterobacterial isolates. Intron mobility (retrohoming) was analyzed using a two-plasmid assay performed in Escherichia coli. Intron mobility assays co

Gas gangrene is a life-threatening emergency. Most cases are caused by clostridial infections, but nonclostridial causes are being increasingly recognized. Nonclostridial gas gangrene is most often due to polymicrobial organisms. Early diagnosis and therapy are required, since the disease may rapidly progress to fatal toxemia. We report a case of gangrenous, atraumatic, nonclostridial myonecrosis of the arm due to Enterobacter cloacae in a nondiabetic patient with neutropenia.

We describe five patients with serious nosocomial infection caused by resistant Enterobacter cloacae. Four of the patients underwent cardiovascular operations and were infected with an identical, multiple beta-lactam resistant E cloacae strain. The fifth patient was admitted with several wounds and skin-ulcers containing both resistant and sensitive E cloacae of other types. The resistant strain caused septicemia in four patients; three developed multiorgan failure and one died. The most probable causes of these infections were an abundant and constant reservoir of E cloacae in a sink at the o

UNLABELLED: The past decade has witnessed the emergence and spread of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacter cloacae complex (CRECC), presenting a significant clinical challenge and urgently demanding new treatment strategies against antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This study focused on the impact of tigecycline on the susceptibility of CRECC isolates to colistin and the collateral sensitivity in CRECC. Under tigecycline pressure, the resistance of five clinically isolated CRECC strains to colistin was converted from resistance to sensitivity. These mutants exhibited significantly higher expression

BACKGROUND: The utility of carbapenems, which are considered 'last-line' agents, is being diminished by the growing incidence of various resistance mechanisms in bacteria. We aimed to investigate the molecular mechanism of carbapenem resistance in Enterobacter cloacae recovered from a 76-year-old patient who had undergone coronary artery bypass grafting and repair of the mitral and tricuspid valves. Interestingly, the patient had no prior history of hospital admission abroad.
METHODS: The Carba-NP test II and synergy testing were performed to confirm carbapenemase activity. PCR was used to de

Beta-lactamase production in Enterobacter cloacae ATCC.13047 was enhanced by glycine, and the degree of enhancement was dependent on the concentration of glycine and the medium used. Maximum enhancement occurred with a concentration of 0.05 moles/l of glycine, and of 4 media examined enhancement was greatest on Isosensitest Agar. Enhanced beta-lactamase production evoked by glycine was compared with that following induction by various concentrations of cefoxitin. The amount of beta-lactamase produced under conditions of maximum glycine enhancement was higher than that produced by cultures full

To identify antibiotic resistant genes and assess the clonality of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacter cloacae (CRECL) isolates from a hospital setting, altogether fifty-two clinical CRECL isolates were collected from 2012 to 2023. Antibiotic resistance genes including blaNDM, blaVIM, blaIMP, blaOXA-48, blaCTX-M-1 and blaTEM, were analyzed by PCR and nucleic acid sequencing. Sequence data were compared with those in the National Center for Biotechnology Information database. Clonality analysis was performed by ERIC-PCR. Among the 52 isolates, urine samples (23.1%) were the most common source, fo

Infections caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria are a growing global concern. Enterobacter cloacae complex (ECC) species are particularly adept at developing antibiotic resistance. Phage therapy is proposed as an alternative treatment for pathogens that no longer respond to antibiotics. Unfortunately, ECC phages are understudied when compared to phages of many other bacterial species. In this Ghanaian-Finnish study, we isolated two ECC strains from ready-to-eat food samples and three novel phages from natural waters against these strains. We sequenced the genomic DNA of the novel Enter

The genus Enterobacter belongs to the ESKAPE group, which includes Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterobacter spp. This group is characterized by the development of resistance to various antibiotics. In recent years, Enterobacter cloacae (E. cloacae) has emerged as a clinically important pathogen responsible for a wide range of healthcare-associated illnesses. Identifying Enterobacter species can be challenging due to their similar phenotypic characteristics. The emergence of multidrug-resistant E. cloac

PURPOSE: To report a case of Enterobacter cloacae (E. cloacae) keratitis in a patient who underwent corneal crosslinking (CXL) for progressive keratoconus.
OBSERVATIONS: A 19-year-old female underwent CXL for keratoconus in her left eye. The patient neglected her post-procedure medications and missed the follow-up visit. Subsequently, she presented on day-10 post CXL with redness and pain in the treated eye. Clinical examination revealed a ring-shape infiltrate measuring 7.8 mm in diameter. Culture indicated the presence of E. cloacae. Treatment with gentamicin failed after the emergence of r

We evaluated the β-lactam resistance phenotypes of clinical and environmental strains of the Enterobacter cloacae complex (ECC) isolated from three Algerian hospitals. The first combination of API 20E, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS), and hsp60 genetic clustering methodologies were carried out for the identification of ECC strains. Our research showed that API 20E and MALDI TOF MS are satisfactory in genus identification of ECC strains, but sequence-based methods are then necessary to discriminate the species and subspecies levels. The increasing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) among pathogenic and opportunistic pathogenic microorganisms is one of the main global public health problems. The consumption of food contaminated with such bacteria (ARB), especially of raw products, might result in the direct acquisition of ARB and in a spread of resistant bacteria along the food chain. The aim of the study was to characterize the antimicrobial susceptibility of potentially extended spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) producing or AmpC resistant Enterobacteriaceae isolated from the surface of 147 muskmelons from wholesale and retail. OBJECTIVES: The Enterobacter cloacae complex (Ecc), routinely referred to as "E. cloacae" in clinical microbiology, encompasses several species with 12 genetic clusters and one sequence crowd that can be identified based on hsp60 sequencing. Little is known about the pathogenicity and distribution of resistance to antibiotics among the Ecc.
METHODS AND RESULTS: In this prospective multicentre study, a total of 193 Ecc clinical isolates were collected from 10 academic hospitals distributed nationally across France and identified at the genetic cluster level on the basis of hsp60 sequencing. E.
