Prior to infection with Ascaris suum, ICR strain mice were inoculated with Salmonella typhisuis intraperitoneally or via gastric gavage. Similarly, Salmonella cholerae-suis var. kunzendorf, Salmonella typhimurium and enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli were administered to mice via gastric gavage 2 weeks prior to A. suum inoculation. Previous inoculation with S. typhisuis, via the intraperitoneal or gastric gavage routes and S. cholerae-suis var. kunzendorf decreased recovery of ascarid larvae from mice lungs. This effect appeared to be due to entrapment of migrating larvae by inflammatory reacti

Gram-negative bacterial infections are increasingly becoming resistant to available antibiotic treatment options. The World Health Organization attributed over 1 million deaths to bacterial antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in 2021. While there is a crisis in terms of the available effective antibiotic repertoire, there is also a simultaneous decline in novel drug discovery. In this scenario, the search for alternative or complementary therapeutic options is not only relevant, but also urgently needed. Bacterial virulence factors have been proposed as alternative therapeutic targets since there i

The purpose of this study was to determine prevalence and molecular characterization of plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance (PMQR) genes [qnrA, qnrB, qnrC, qnrD, qnrS, aac(6')-Ib-cr, qepA, and oqxAB] among extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli and Klebsiella spp. isolates from bloodcultures in Hungary. A total of 103 isolates were tested for quinolone susceptibility by microdilution method and PMQR genes were detected by polymerase chain reaction. About 40 ESBL-producing E. coli (39%) and 50 ESBL-producing Klebsiella spp. strains (48%) were resistant to ciproflox

We described 27 polyclonal colistin-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (MIC 4-16 μg/mL) infections (12 pneumonia, 12 urinary tract infection (UTI), two Bacteremia, and one skin/soft tissue infection) in which 74% harbored KPC. The isolates were polyclonal, 6 STs were identified and the colistin resistance was due to chromosome mutations. Eight patients with UTI received monotherapy, and combination therapy was given to 19 patients. Overall mortality was 37%. In vitro synergy using time-kill assay was observed in 14 of 19 (74%) isolates tested; the synergistic effect was observed for almost all isola

BACKGROUND: The combination of inherent antimicrobial resistance and high mortality after bloodstream infections (BSIs) caused by chromosomally mediated AmpC-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CAE) emphasizes the importance of identifying patients at risk of BSI because of these bacteria. This retrospective case-control study examines chronic hemodialysis among other risk factors for BSI caused by CAE.
METHODS: Hospitalized adults with Enterobacteriaceae BSI from January 1, 2010-June 30, 2014, at 2 large community hospitals in the Southeastern United States were identified. Multivariate logistic r

Bloodstream infections (BSIs) are associated with a significantly increased risk of fatality. No report has been found about the molecular epidemiology of Enterobacteriaceae causing BSI in neonates in Poland. The aim of this work was to determine the antibiotic resistance profiles, virulence gene prevalence, the epidemiological and genetic relationships among the isolates from Enterobacteriaceae causing BSI in neonates with birth weight < 1501 g. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed. PCR was performed to identify the presence of common beta-lactamase genes, virulence genes. PFGE

In this paper we analyze three enteropathogenetic opportunistic infections represented by Candida spp., C. difficile and carbapenemase-producing K. pneumoniae. The common pathogenetic pathway is based on an alteration of the intestinal flora, now mainly referred as the human microbiome, with secondary opportunism for infections caused by Candida, C. difficile and carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae ("CCC"). We highlight the epidemiology, risk factors, clinical syndromes associated with the pathogens and we propose some new issues related to the epidemiology and diagnosis of candidemia,

Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) pose a significant threat in urinary tract infections (UTIs), which are among the most common infectious diseases. This review summarizes the risk factors and treatment advances for CRE-associated UTIs. Key risk factors include advanced age, history of carbapenem use, invasive urological procedures, indwelling catheters, immunosuppression (e.g., in transplant recipients), and prolonged hospitalization. The prognosis of CRE UTIs is generally better than infections at other sites but is influenced by factors like ICU admission and treatment failure.

Therapy of invasive infections due to multidrug-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (MDR-E) is challenging, and some of the few active drugs are not available in many countries. For extended-spectrum β-lactamase and AmpC producers, carbapenems are the drugs of choice, but alternatives are needed because the rate of carbapenem resistance is rising. Potential active drugs include classic and newer β-lactam-β-lactamase inhibitor combinations, cephamycins, temocillin, aminoglycosides, tigecycline, fosfomycin, and, rarely, fluoroquinolones or trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. These drugs might be considered

Enterobacteriaceae bloodstream infections (EB-BSIs) are a common manifestation of Gram-negative sepsis and are initially managed with empirical intravenous antibiotics. Upon stabilisation and source control, patients are often transitioned to an oral agent. Fluoroquinolones (FQs) plays a prominent role in stepdown therapy for severe infections owing to favourable pharmacokinetic parameters; however, serious adverse events (AEs) have been documented with their use. A total of 224 adults with EB-BSI initiated on empirical intravenous antibiotics with stepdown to oral β-lactam (BLM) (n = 84) or F

Ceftazidime-avibactam is a novel cephalosporin-beta-lactamase inhibitor combination that is active against many carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE). We describe a retrospective chart review for 60 patients who received ceftazidime-avibactam for a CRE infection. In-hospital mortality was 32%, 53% of patients had microbiological cure, and 65% had clinical success. In this severely ill population with CRE infections, ceftazidime-avibactam was an appropriate option.

The main drawback of current antibiotic therapies is the emergence and rapid increase in antibiotic resistance. Nocardiae are aerobic, Gram-positive, catalase-positive, non-motile actinomycetes. Nocardia brasiliensis was reported as antibiotic producer. The purpose of the study was to determine antibacterial activity of N. brasiliensis PTCC 1422 against isolated Enterobacteriaceae from urinary tract infections (UTIs). The common bacteria from UTIs were isolated from hospital samples. Antimicrobial susceptibility test was performed for the isolated pathogens using Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion met

INTRODUCTION: It is estimated that 150 million urinary tract infections (UTIs) occur yearly worldwide, resulting in more than 6 billion dollar in direct healthcare cost. The etiology of UTIs is predictable, with Escherichia coli, an Enterobacteriaceae being the principal pathogen. Quinolones are usually the drug of choice. In this study, we report the resistance pattern of Enterobacteriaceae isolates from UTIs to quinolones among in-patients and out-patients at the Yaoundé Reference Hospital in Cameroon.
METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out for a ten-month period. Cons

Acute cholecystitis (AC) is one of the most common surgical diseases. Bacterial infection accounts for 50% to 85% of the disease's onset. Since there is a close relationship between the biliary system and the gut, the aims of this study were to characterize and determine the influence of gut microbiota on AC, to detect the pathogenic microorganism in the biliary system, and to explore the relationship between the gut and bile microbiota of patients with AC. A total of 185 713 high-quality sequence reads were generated from the faecal samples of 15 patients and 13 healthy controls by 16S rRNA g
