Effect of enterostomy on quality of life in spinal cord injury patients.

To determine the difference in the bowel care of spinal cord injury patients before and after enterostomy, we interviewed 20 patients--19 men and one woman. Their ages were 27-75, median 55 years. The paralytic lesions were spastic in ten and flaccid in ten. A total of 24 enterostomies were done for the following reasons: fecal contamination of decubitus ulcer in seven, colonic tumor in six, perforation of the colon in four, prolapse of the large intestine in four, inconvenience of bowel care in two, and perirectal abscess in one. There were 17 sigmoid and five transverse colostomies, and two

Gastric outlet obstruction with ascites: EUS-guided gastro-enterostomy is feasible.

Background and study aims  Endoscopic ultrasound-guided gastro-enterostomy(EUS-GE) is a recently described novel minimally invasive endoscopic procedure for patients having malignant gastric outlet obstruction (GOO). The safety of EUS-GE in the presence of ascites with GOO is not known. The objective of the study was to evaluate the feasibility and safety of EUS-GE in patients with GOO and ascites. Patients and methods  Consecutive patients with GOO who underwent EUS-GE between January 2019 and March 2021 constituted the study population. EUS-GE was performed using either EPASS or free-hand te

Foley catheter enterostomy for postoperative bowel perforation: an effective source control.

BACKGROUND: Control of bowel effluents is imperative in cases of postoperative bowel perforation, and this is best achieved by stoma formation. When stoma formation is impossible, the surgeon is often left with less optimal choices. We have used a Foley catheter enterostomy to provide source control in difficult cases of bowel perforation, and the details are reviewed in this report. METHODS: Three patients underwent reoperation for postoperative bowel perforation. Two patients had leaking ileocolic anastomoses, and one patient had a leak from a serosal tear. In all cases a Foley catheter ent

Temporary Witzel enterostomy in decompensated small-bowel obstruction or paralytic ileus.

The technique of temporary Witzel enterostomy and its indications are reported and results in 81 patients (99 enterostomies) retrospectively reviewed. The procedure is recommended as an adjunct to primary surgery in cases of small-bowel obstruction with severe distention, extensive peritoneal defects and compromised vascularity, in paralytic ileus due to generalized peritonitis and in peritoneal carinomatosis. With the Witzel tunnel, postoperative bowel paralysis can be prevented, endangered anastomosis protected, bowel function directly monitored and long-term intestinal decompression achieve

Small bowel anastomosis in peritonitis compared to enterostomy formation: a systematic review.

PURPOSE: Anastomotic leakage after small bowel resection in emergency laparotomy is a severe complication. A consensus on the risk factors for anastomotic leakage has not been established, and it is still unclear if peritonitis is a risk factor. This systematic review aimed to evaluate if an entero-entero/entero-colonic anastomosis is safe in patients with peritonitis undergoing abdominal acute care surgery. METHODS: A systematic literature review based on PRISMA guidelines was performed, searching the databases Pubmed/MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, and Science Direct for studies of anastomosis i

Sutureless Loop Enterostomy in Very Low and Extremely Low Birth Weight Infants.

Introduction Sutureless enterostomy is used as an effective technique for constructing an enterostomy in very low and extremely low birth weight infants in Japan. Sutureless enterostomy is a separate type of enterostomy procedure for low birth weight infants. We adapted this technique and developed sutureless loop enterostomy (SLE), an approach without a skin bridge in which the intestinal wall is not sutured to the abdominal wall. This study aimed to compare SLE outcomes with those of sutureless enterostomy (SE) and the conventional procedure (C). Methods We retrospectively reviewed clinical

A retrospective cohort study of the application of Santulli enterostomy in neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis.

The use of Santulli enterostomy (SE) for necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) has been limited to a small number of studies involving a small number of patients and no control group. Our study aimed to compare the clinical safety and efficacy of Santulli enterostomy with those of single- or double-lumen enterostomy for neonatal NEC through a retrospective cohort study. One hundred ten patients who met the criteria were divided into an SE group (64 patients) and a conventional enterostomy (CE) group (46 patients). The CE group underwent single- or double-lumen enterostomy. There were no significant

Duct-enterostomy as a treatment of pancreatic fistula in a bladder-drained pancreas transplant.

A case of combined pancreaticoduodeno-renal transplant with good graft function was complicated by recurrent episodes of graft pancreatitis treated by vesical catheter drainage. Four months after transplantation, a fistula from the pancreatic body associated with ascitis was identified. Anastomosis between pancreatic fistula and an individualized jejunal loop was performed. The duodenocystostomy was not disconnected. A splint placed inside the wirsung was exteriorized percutaneously through the jejunal loop and removed 30 days after the operation. Both kidney and pancreas grafts are functionin

Palliative percutaneous tube enterostomy in afferent-loop syndrome presenting as jaundice: clinical effectiveness.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical effectiveness of percutaneous tube enterostomy in afferent loop syndrome presenting as jaundice. Tube enterostomy was successfully performed in seven patients without procedural complications. The serum bilirubin level normalized in five patients but remained elevated in the other two, presumably related to more proximal bile duct obstruction. Percutaneous tube enterostomy is an effective palliative treatment in afferent loop syndrome presenting as an obstructing jaundice. However, coexisting biliary obstruction might be problematic for

[Expert consensus on home management of colorectal cancer patients with enterostomy (2026 version)].

Enterostomy constitutes a crucial intervention in the comprehensive treatment of colorectal cancer, often resulting in significant alterations in patients' body image and defecation patterns post-surgery. During the home-based rehabilitation phase, individuals with an enterostomy encounter not only technical challenges associated with stoma care and the prevention of complications but also psychosocial difficulties such as psychological stress, role adaptation, and barriers to social reintegration. The adoption of evidence-based home management strategies has the potential to enhance patients'

Permanent enterostomy in Hirschsprung disease: can we predict which patients are at risk?

BACKGROUND: Permanent enterostomy in patients with Hirschsprung disease (HD) is usually never on the mind of a pediatric surgeon. It is uncommon but represents an important long-term outcome. Although disease segment length is a recognized risk factor, the factors influencing permanent diversion beyond disease extent are not well defined. The aim of this study was to characterize patients requiring permanent enterostomy and to identify clinical, surgical, and patient-centered factors contributing to this outcome. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients with HD treated a
