Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68), as one of the major pathogens of paediatric respiratory disease, has been widely spread in the population in recent years. As the basis of virus antigenicity, antigenic epitopes are essential to monitoring the transformation of virus antigenicity. However, there is a lack of systematic studies on the antigenic epitopes of EV-D68. In this study, a bioinformatics-based prediction algorithm for human enteroviruses was used to predict the conformational epitopes of EV-D68. The prediction results showed that the conformational epitopes of EV-D68 were clustered into three s

Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is a common childhood infection caused by human enteroviruses and is clinically characterised by fever with vesicular rash on the hands, feet, and mouth. While enterovirus A71 (EV-A71) and coxsackievirus A16 (CVA16) were the major etiological agents of HFMD in India earlier, the data on recently circulating enteroviruses associated with HFMD are sparse. Here, we describe the molecular epidemiology of enteroviruses associated with HFMD in South India from 2015 to 2017. We used archived enterovirus real-time reverse transcription (RT) PCR-positive vesicle swa

INTRODUCTION: Human enterovirus D68 (EV-D68), which belongs to enteroviruses of the small RNA family, is a type of enterovirus that can cause acute respiratory tract infection and central nervous system diseases. This study systematically analysed and summarized EV-D68 antibody studies in databases and identified the seropositivity rates of different regions, ages, and sexes.
METHODS: Meta-analysis was performed using STATA 16.0 software. I2 and Q tests were used to analyse the heterogeneity of the included studies. Meta-regression analysis was performed for different groups, and Egger's line

Despite serving as the primary entry portal for coxsackievirus B (CVB), little is known about CVB infection of the intestinal epithelium, owing at least in part to the lack of suitable in vivo models and the inability of cultured cells to recapitulate the complexity and structure associated with the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Here, we report on the development of a three-dimensional (3-D) organotypic cell culture model of Caco-2 cells to model CVB infection of the gastrointestinal epithelium. We show that Caco-2 cells grown in 3-D using the rotating wall vessel (RWV) bioreactor recapitulate

BACKGROUND Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is a common contagious disease in infants; it is caused by multiple serotypes of human enterovirus (EV), which belongs to the enterovirus genus of the picornavirus family. According to sentinel surveillance, infection with EVs other than EV71 and CVA 16 have become increasingly common in recent years among HFMD patients, posing new challenges for HFMD control. This study aimed to explore the spectrum of serotypes in the other EVs (non-EV71 and non-CVA16) in Fujian province in southeastern China. MATERIAL AND METHODS We investigated 562 samples fr

This report describes a case of an eight-month-old pediatric patient with 3-methylglutaconic aciduria with deafness-dystonia, hepatopathy, encephalopathy, and Leigh-like syndrome (MEGD(H)EL) syndrome, who initially presented to the emergency room with unresponsiveness and profound hypoglycemia. Laboratory investigations revealed metabolic acidosis, elevated liver function tests, prolonged bleeding times with elevated D-dimer, and a respiratory panel showing human enterovirus/rhinovirus. CSF was positive for human herpesvirus 6. MRI of the brain without contrast revealed relatively bilateral an

During 2022-2024, a total of 35 of 1,040 households had a distinct symptomatic index case of enterovirus D68; estimated symptomatic secondary infection rate was 13.6%. Sequences from patients within households clustered closely; we observed 0-2 pairwise nucleotide differences between household cases 6-14 days apart.

Current methods for detecting infections either require a sample collected from an actively infected site, are limited in the number of agents they can query, and/or yield no information on the immune response. Here we present an approach that uses temporally coordinated changes in highly-multiplexed antibody measurements from longitudinal blood samples to monitor infection events at sub-species resolution across the human virome. In a longitudinally-sampled cohort of South African adolescents representing >100 person-years, we identify >650 events across 48 virus species and observe strong ep

Enteroviruses are members of the Picornaviridae family consisting of human enterovirus groups A, B, C, and D as well as nonhuman enteroviruses. Human enterovirus type 71 (EV71) has emerged as a major cause of viral encephalitis, known as hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD), in children worldwide, especially in the Asia-Pacific region. EV71 and coxsackievirus A16 are the two viruses responsible for HFMD which are members of group A enteroviruses. The identified EV71 receptors provide useful information for understanding viral replication and tissue tropism. Host factors interact with the inter

Enterovirus-A71 (EV-A71) associated Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is a highly contagious viral infection affecting children in Asia-Pacific region and has become a major threat to public health. Although several EV-A71 genotypes (C, D, and G) were isolated in India in recent years, no recognizable outbreak of EV-A71 caused HFMD, Acute Flaccid paralysis (AFP) or encephalitis have been reported so far. It is essential to study the pathogenicity or cell tropism of these Indian isolates in order to understand their tendency to cause disease. We investigated the susceptibility and cytokine re

Enterovirus D68 mainly causes respiratory tract infections, with children being the main infected population and most adults experiencing latent infections. This report presents the cases of two older patients with enterovirus D68 pneumonia. Both of them were diagnosed using next-generation sequencing, and one of them died of mediastinal emphysema despite undergoing various treatments. This report also reviewed the biological characteristics and epidemiological features of enterovirus D68 as well as the clinical diagnosis and treatment of the viral pneumonia. Currently, there are no specific a

Human enterovirus D68 (EV-D68), a member of the species Enterovirus D of the Picornaviridae family, was first isolated in 1962 in the United States. EV-D68 infection was only infrequently reported until an outbreak occurred in 2014 in the US; since then, it has continued to increase worldwide. EV-D68 infection leads to severe respiratory illness and has recently been reported to be linked to the development of the neurogenic disease known as acute flaccid myelitis (AFM), mostly in children, seriously endangering public health. Hitherto, treatment options for EV-D68 infections were limited to s

BACKGROUND: Enterovirus-D68 (EV-D68) was long underreported, with only sporadic cases of respiratory disease worldwide until 2014, when numerous countries experienced significant outbreaks of EV-D68. In Croatia, sporadic detections have primarily resulted from an absence of systematic surveillance. Following the increased incidence of EV-D68 across Europe in 2022, we started to characterize EV-positive respiratory samples in Zagreb to confirm the presence of EV-D68 and identify circulating lineages through phylogenetic analysis.
METHODS: Respiratory samples from individuals with acute respira

A throat swab sample from a pediatric case in Tongzhou District, Beijing was identified as enterovirus; the patient was a 1-year-and-8-month-old male sporadic case. Whole-genome sequencing revealed a viral genome length of 7 436 bp. BLAST alignment confirmed the serotype as EV-D68. Phylogenetic analysis of the whole genome indicated that this strain belongs to the B3 clade, showing closer genetic proximity to the 2018 Shanghai strain MW697453 with 99.53% whole-genome nucleotide homology. Genetic and amino acid variation analysis demonstrated that the B3 subclade to which this strain belongs ex

First described in 1962 in children hospitalized for pneumonia and bronchiolitis, the Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) is an emergent viral pathogen. Since its discovery, during the long period of surveillance up to 2005, EV-D68 was reported only as a cause of sporadic outbreaks. In recent years, many reports from different countries have described an increasing number of patients with respiratory diseases due to EV-D68 associated with relevant clinical severity. In particular, an unexpectedly high number of children have been hospitalized for severe respiratory disease due to EV-D68, requiring intens

Acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis (AHC) is an epidemic form of highly contagious conjunctivitis, characterized by conjunctival hemorrhages. The first AHC outbreak was described in 1969 in Ghana, West Africa, and was called Apollo disease, from the Apollo landing on the moon. This outbreak was caused by Enterovirus 70 (EV70) together with a Coxsackievirus A24 (CVA24v) variant, which are the major etiological agents involved in AHC outbreaks worldwide. AHC is known to be directly transmitted by close person-to-person contact or indirectly through soiled ophthalmological materials or unsafe recrea
