[Epidemiology of enterovirus D68 infection].

In autumn 2015, the detection number of enterovirus D68 increased in Japan, and many cases of severe bronchial asthma and acute flaccid paralysis were observed. At that time, among WPR countries Japan was a country not implementing AFP surveillance, which was implemented in 174 countries in 194 WHO member countries. Since May 2018, ''acute flaccid paralysis (excluding poliomyelitis)'' was introduced into the notification diseases based on the Infectious Disease Law. Acute flaccid paralysis cases under 15 years old were reported to the National Epidemiological Surveillance of Infectious Disease

Enterovirus 71 infection and vaccines.

Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is a highly contagious viral infection affecting young children during the spring to fall seasons. Recently, serious outbreaks of HFMD were reported frequently in the Asia-Pacific region, including China and Korea. The symptoms of HFMD are usually mild, comprising fever, loss of appetite, and a rash with blisters, which do not need specific treatment. However, there are uncommon neurological or cardiac complications such as meningitis and acute flaccid paralysis that can be fatal. HFMD is most commonly caused by infection with coxsackievirus A16, and secondl

Tachycardia in a newborn with enterovirus infection.

Enterovirus infections are common in the neonatal period. Newborns are at a higher risk of severe disease including meningoencephalitis, sepsis syndrome, cardiovascular collapse, or hepatitis. The mechanism of heart failure in patients with enterovirus infection remains unknown. Early diagnosis may help clinicians predict complications in those infants initially presenting with severe disease. An 11-day-old male newborn was admitted to our neonatal intensive care unit because of tachycardia and crises of cyanosis. His elder brother had febrile illness. The newborn was cyanotic, in respiratory

MicroRNA and Pathogenesis of Enterovirus Infection.

There are no currently available specific antiviral therapies for non-polio Enterovirus infections. Although several vaccines have entered clinical trials, the efficacy requires further evaluation, particularly for cross-strain protective activity. Curing patients with viral infections is a public health problem due to antigen alterations and drug resistance caused by the high genomic mutation rate. To conquer these limits in the development of anti-Enterovirus treatments, a comprehensive understanding of the interactions between Enterovirus and host cells is urgently needed. MicroRNA (miRNA)

Enterovirus D68 Infection in an Adult.

The first confirmed US case of severe respiratory tract infection caused by enterovirus D68 in an adult occurred in a pregnant woman with no history of asthma in August 2014. Before she came to the hospital, she had a productive cough, headache, and increasing dyspnea. At the hospital, she was hypoxic and required admittance to the intensive care unit and management with noninvasive bilevel positive pressure assistance. Analysis of a nasopharyngeal swab sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for a viral respiratory panel of tests confirmed enterovirus D68 infection. She eventua

Update on enterovirus 71 infection.

Human enterovirus type 71 (EV71) has emerged as a major cause of viral encephalitis in children worldwide. The identified EV71 receptors provide useful information for understanding EV71replication and tissue tropism. Host factors interact with the internal ribosome entry site (IRES) of EV71 to regulate viral translation. However, the specific molecular features of the EV71 genome that determine virulence remain unclear. The EV71 capsid protein VP1 region might contribute to virulence and neurotropism. Transgenic mice expressing the EV71 receptor that were infected with the virus exhibited a d

[Infection mechanism of enterovirus 71].

Identification of a specific viral receptor is important for understanding the virus infection mechanism. I identified P-selectin glycoprotein ligand-1 (PSGL-1) as one of the functional receptors for enterovirus 71 (EV71), a pathogen that causes hand, foot, and mouth disease. PSGL-1, which belongs to the sialomucin family, is a transmembrane protein mainly expressed on leukocytes. Tyrosine sulfation in the N-terminal region of PSGL-1 is critical for PSGL-1's capacity to bind EV71. The identification of EV71 receptors provides important mechanistic information about viral entry into cells and h

[Diagnosis and outcome of neurotropic enterovirus infections in childhood].

BACKGROUND: Enterovirus infections are among the most common causes of aseptic meningitis. Worldwide there are reports about recurring outbreaks, especially during the summer. They are favoured by conditions of bad hygiene and contaminated water, transmission is predominantly through the faeco-oral route or by droplet infection. The most common species are Coxsackie B and ECHO (Enteric Cytopathogenic Human Orphan) virus. ECHO viruses have a worldwide distribution and usually occur as "summer flu" or aseptic meningitis and meningoencephalitis in toddlers and infants. Type 30 caused an outbreak

Enterovirus infections in acute pancreatitis - a possible etiological connection.

All patients admitted with a preliminary diagnosis of acute pancreatitis during a one-year period were subjected to virus investigations. 142 patients were included in the study and of these 91 were found to have acute pancreatitis. Evidence of enteroviral infection was found in 18 of the 91 patients (19.8 per cent). From 17 of the 18 patients enterovirus was isolated from feces or urine, and in one a significant titer rise (CF-test) against Coxsackie virus B5 was found. A significant titer rise of antibodies against the virus type isolated could be demonstrated in 7 of the 17 patients. Thus i

An epidemic of enterovirus 71 infection in Taiwan. Taiwan Enterovirus Epidemic Working Group.

BACKGROUND: Enteroviruses can cause outbreaks of hand-foot-and-mouth disease (characterized by vesicular lesions on the hands, feet, and oral mucosa) or herpangina, usually without life-threatening manifestations. In 1998 an epidemic of enterovirus 71 infection caused hand-foot-and-mouth disease and herpangina in thousands of people in Taiwan, some of whom died. METHODS: We assessed the epidemiologic aspects of this outbreak. Cases of hand-foot-and-mouth disease or herpangina in ambulatory patients were reported to the Taiwan Department of Health by a mean of 818 sentinel physicians. Severe c

Antiviral Combination Approach as a Perspective to Combat Enterovirus Infections.

Human enteroviruses distributed worldwide are causative agents of a broad spectrum of diseases with extremely high morbidity, including a series of severe illnesses of the central nervous system, heart, endocrine pancreas, skeleton muscles, etc., as well as the common cold contributing to the development of chronic respiratory diseases, including the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The above mentioned diseases along with the significantly high morbidity and mortality in children, as well as in the high-risk populations (immunodeficiencies, neonates) definitely formulate the chemotherapy

[Epidemiologic and etiologic characteristic of enterovirus infections in Khabarovsk region].

Results of epidemiologic, virologic, and serologic studies of enterovirus infections in Khabarovsk region from 1975 to 2006 were analyzed. Patterns of epidemic process of these infections were established: periodic change of dominating type of pathogen in the population; onset of the large epidemic peaks of incidence during emergence of circulation of new for the given area serotypes of enteroviruses; possibility of realization of several routes of virus transmission. Role of water factor in the progress of the epidemic process was revealed. Etiology of the large epidemic rise of aseptic menin

Enterovirus infections in neonates. A retrospective study of 21 cases.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to define the major features of enterovirus infections in the neonatal period based on our own experience. METHODS: Epidemiology, clinical manifestations and laboratory investigations concerning 21 neonates having experienced a Coxsackie B or an Echovirus infection between 1987 and 1991, were retrospectively reviewed. Aetiological diagnosis was made by classical viral isolation and/or by evidencing Coxsackie B-specific IgM antibodies with an immunocapture enzyme immunoassay. RESULTS: In 13 neonates the infection occurred between June and September. The o

The pathogenesis and virulence of enterovirus-D68 infection.

In 2014, enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) emerged causing outbreaks of severe respiratory disease in children worldwide. In a subset of patients, EV-D68 infection was associated with the development of central nervous system (CNS) complications, including acute flaccid myelitis (AFM). Since then, the number of reported outbreaks has risen biennially, which emphasizes the need to unravel the systemic pathogenesis in humans. We present here a comprehensive review on the different stages of the pathogenesis of EV-D68 infection - infection in the respiratory tract, systemic dissemination and infection of

Enterovirus infection and acute flaccid myelitis.

Recent outbreaks of limb paralysis similar to poliomyelitis, termed acute flaccid myelitis (AFM), have prompted intense investigation into potential etiology. Peaks of AFM were seen in the United States in 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018, coincident with peaks in enterovirus transmission, particularly EV-D68. Similar peaks of AFM and EV-D68 circulation were reported in other parts of the world. The causal relationship between EV-D68 is still not widely accepted as it is for poliovirus and EV-A71, the latter of which is endemic in the US. Recent in vitro and mouse model data as well as enhanced-sensi
