Deposition and germination of conidia of the entomopathogen Entomophaga maimaiga infecting larvae of gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar.

Germination of conidia of Entomophaga maimaiga, an important fungal pathogen of gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar, was investigated on water agar and larval cuticle at varying densities. Percent germination was positively associated with conidial density on water agar but not on larval cuticle. When conidia were showered onto water agar, the rate of germination was much slower than on the cuticle of L. dispar larvae. From the same conidial showers, the resulting conidial densities on water agar were much higher than those on larval cuticle in part because many conidia adhered to setae and did not r

Acute Post-traumatic Invasive Basidiobolomycosis With Concomitant Mucormycosis in the Southeastern United States.

Basidiobolus spp., belonging to the order Entomophthorales, cause a rare group of fungal infections known as basidiobolomycosis, which has been described as causing subcutaneous and gastrointestinal clinical manifestations in both immunocompetent and immunocompromised patients. Basidiobolomycosis is thought to be endemic to subtropical and tropical regions such as Asia, Africa, South America, and the southwestern United States. Herein, we describe a case of tissue-invasive Basidiobolus infection with concomitant mucormycosis in a middle-aged woman following a traumatic motor vehicle accident i

Rhinofacial zygomycosis caused by Conidiobolus coronatus. A case report.

A case of rhinofacial zygomycosis with of years duration, caused by Conidiobolus coronatus is described. The patient, a 72-years-old woman, presented with a bilateral distortion of the subcutaneous tissue and disfigurement of the face. Treatment with ketoconazole and potassium iodide did not prevent several relapses. At present she is still under treatment with fluconazole with clinical healing. Histopathological and mycological examination confirmed the dermatological diagnosis. An increasing number of cases of zygomycosis caused by fungi of the order Entomophthorales have also been reported

Gastrointestinal zygomycotic infection caused by Basidiobolus ranarum: case report and review.

Basidiobolus species are filamentous fungi belonging to the order Entomophthorales. Unlike other zygomycetes, Basidiobolus species have been mainly associated with a tropical form of subcutaneous zygomycosis in otherwise healthy individuals. Visceral disease caused by this pathogen is rare, but cases of gastrointestinal infection with Basidiobolus ranarum have been reported worldwide. In many of these reports, the inflammatory disease of the colon has been confused with Crohn's disease. We report the third case of B. ranarum gastrointestinal infection in the United States, which was initially

Conidiobolus coronatus granuloma of the right inferior turbinate: A rare presentation.

Fungal infections are common in tropical countries such as India. Very few clinical cases caused by the Entomophthorales Zygomycetes have been reported. Rhinofacial infection is a rare form of zygomycosis in humans, and only limited information regarding optimal treatment is available. We report here a rare case of rhinofacial Conidiobolus coronatus infection in a previously healthy 18-year-old man who presented with a fungal granuloma of the right inferior turbinate and face. Diagnosis was confirmed by microbiologic culture from a tissue biopsy. The infection was successfully treated with sur

ThinPrep liquid-based cytologic diagnosis of hepatic entomophthoromycosis (basidiobolomycosis) with Splendore-Hoeppli phenomenon.

Zygomycotic fungal infections are increasingly recognized in immunocompetent and immunocompromised patients in nonendemic countries because of the increased global travels. One of the emerging fungal infections is Entomophthorales which cause deep visceral infections that clinically and radiologically mimic malignancies because they form invasive obstructing masses. A quick diagnosis is life-saving. The current standard diagnosis relies on histopathologic examination and microbiology culture which are time consuming. Cytologic examination is a rapid reliable alternative diagnostic tool. There

Basidioboliasis in anurans in Florida.

Members of the genus Basidiobolus, a saprophytic fungus, have been associated with the digestive tracts of a wide variety of amphibians and reptiles. To elucidate the relationship of Basidiobolus sp. with amphibians in central Florida (USA), we document the occurrence of the fungus in the digestive tracts of Bufo terrestris, Buffo quercicus, Hyla femoralis, Hyla cinerea, Hyla gratiosa, Hyla squirella, Osteopilus septentrionalis, and Rana utricularia. Species that occupy terrestrial habitats (B. terrestris, B. quercicus, and R. utricularis) were found to harbor Basidiobolus spp. more frequently

Basidiobolus ranarum as an etiologic agent of gastrointestinal zygomycosis.

Basidiobolus ranarum is a known cause of subcutaneous zygomycosis. Recently, its etiologic role in gastrointestinal infections has been increasingly recognized. While the clinical presentation of the subcutaneous disease is quite characteristic and the disease is easy to diagnose, gastrointestinal basidiobolomycosis poses diagnostic difficulties; its clinical presentation is nonspecific, there are no identifiable risk factors, and all age groups are susceptible. The case of gastrointestinal basidiobolomycosis described in the present report occurred in a 41-year-old Indian male who had a histo

The first entomophthoralean killing millipedes, Arthrophaga myriapodina n. gen. n. sp., causes climbing before host death.

A new species and genus of entomophthoralean fungus, Arthrophaga myriapodina kills polydesmid millipedes. This species was first seen over a century ago but never described. It is the first millipede pathogen known from the order Entomophthorales, species of which are best known as pathogens of a wide diversity of insects. The fungus induces pre-death climbing behavior in its hosts, enabling the fungus to broadcast its forcibly-discharged conidia from a high vantage, which presumably increases the fitness of the fungus. Successful Treatment of Invasive Conidiobolus Infection During Therapy for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

Invasive fungal infections are a serious cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with hematologic malignancies. Conidiobolus species are molds within the order Entomophthorales and may disseminate to become rapidly fatal in immunocompromised individuals. This species of fungal infections are often multidrug resistant (MDR) and present unique therapeutic challenges. Reports of Conidiobolus infections are rare in pediatric oncology. We report the successful treatment of an adolescent male with B-cell lymphoblastic leukemia and MDR invasive sinopulmonary Conidiobolus infection with emphasis

A case of subcutaneous zygomycosis.

Zygomycosis is an acute or chronic infection caused by several fungal agents belonging to the phylum Zygomycota. These are saprophytic fungi and are found ubiquitously in the environment. These are emerging highly opportunistic pathogenic organisms. Basidiobolus ranarum (B. haptosporus, B. meristoporus) is a fungus belonging to the order Entomophthorales under the family Zygomycota. Basidiobolomycosis is a predominantly subcutaneous infection involving the trunk and limbs in immunocompetent hosts. We hereby report a case of Basidiobolomycosis from the Department of Microbiology, Siddhartha Med

Entomophthoromycosis: a challenging emerging disease.

Entomophthoromycosis is a rare fungal infection that may affect immunocompetent hosts; predominantly in tropical and subtropical regions. Recently, the importance of this emerging mycosis has increased and the scope of its manifestations has been expanded. These manifestations; however, may masquerade as other clinical entities. Prompt diagnosis of this infection requires a high index of suspicion. Although histopathological examination and cultures are the gold standard diagnostic tools; molecular diagnosis is now available and started to play an important role. The cornerstone treatment is p

Histological and ultrastructural features of gastrointestinal basidiobolomycosis.

Basidiobolus ranarum is a fungus found in the dung of amphibians, reptiles, and insectivorous bats. Its structural elements include both hyphae and zygospores. Patients with B. ranarum infection may present with subcutaneous, gastrointestinal, or systemic lesions. Here we report a case of gastrointesinal badidiomycosis in a 13-year-old male child who presented with acute abdomen. Exploration revealed a mass in the ascending colon. On histology, transmural granulomatous inflammation composed of abundant eosinophils, lymphocytes, histiocytes and giant cells was seen. Histochemical stains reveale

Experimental exposure of Canadian toads to Basidiobolus ranarum.

Experimental transmission of the fungus Basidiobolus ranarum was induced in two treatment groups of Canadian toads (Bufo hemiophrys) and caused a fatal mycotic dermatitis. Seven of 10 (70%) toads that had their ventral skin mildly abraded and exposed to B. ranarum developed hyperemia, and sloughing of their ventral skin and died. Toads with abraded ventral skin or exposure to infected skin also were affected statistically at a higher rate than those with abraded skin and exposure to pure cultures of B. ranarum inoculated into their water source. Of toads showing clinical disease, B. ranarum wa

Diversity of acaropathogenic fungi in Poland and other European countries.

The occurrence, species diversity and some aspects of taxonomical affinity and host selectivity of acaropathogenic fungi associated with phytophagous, saprotrophic and predacious mites in Poland and other European countries were investigated on wild and cultivated plants, in insect feeding sites under the bark and in decayed wood. From among 33 species of fungi affecting mites only five species of Entomophthorales were separated and the most numerous were Neozygites floridana mostly on Tetranychus urticae, N. abacaridis on a few eriophyid species, and Conidiobolus coronatus attacking gamasid m
