Enuresis and sleep fellowship education.

PURPOSE: Enuresis is a common sleep-related concern in school aged children that gradually decreases into adulthood. We performed a survey of sleep providers in order to assess their comfort level in managing patients with enuresis. METHODS: Survey participants were recruited via the Pedsleep listserv and sleep medicine program directors in the USA on basecamp application. The Pedsleep list includes a mixture of physicians, psychologists, and other sleep providers/researchers. RESULTS: Forty-two sleep providers completed the survey. Forty (95%) were board certified in sleep medicine, and 32

Hereditary phenotypes in nocturnal enuresis.

OBJECTIVE: To identify phenotypic characteristics in three large families with autosomal dominant nocturnal enuresis (NE), and to elucidate whether such characteristics persist after cessation of symptoms. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: From three unrelated NE kindreds (A-C) we included 98 living members of whom 34 either had active NE (>one wet night/month after the age of 5 years) or a history of NE. The family members were interviewed to identify NE type and severity. Subsequently, night-time urine production was recorded for 2 weeks at home and 4 days of frequency-volume charts were completed. Neuromotor development in nocturnal enuresis.

In children with nocturnal enuresis, a higher rate of minor neurological dysfunction has been found. The aim of this study was to assess timed performance (a measure of motor performance speed) and associated movements using a standardized and reliable instrument. The motor function of 37 children with nocturnal enuresis (27 males, 10 females; mean age 10y 7mo [SD 1y 10mo]; age range 8y-14y 8mo) and 40 comparison children without enuresis (17 males, 23 females; mean age 10y 7mo [SD 1y 6mo]; age range 8y-14y 8mo) was assessed using the Zurich Neuromotor Assessment. Children with nocturnal enure

Nocturnal enuresis: systems for assessment.

Childhood nocturnal enuresis, or bedwetting, is a common childhood condition that causes children and their families stress and embarrassment and which can radically affect the lives of these children. Penny Dobson and Anne Weaver outline how nurses can inform and support these families, and describe a research-based approach, the three systems, which provides a useful framework for assessing the problem before choosing the most appropriate treatment strategy. Specific help that could be offered teenagers is also outlined.

Sleep/Arousal and enuresis subtypes.

PURPOSE: The mechanisms responsible for enuresis are maturational delays and the extent of the maturational lag equates with the severity of the clinical picture. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A literature review was conducted comparing the similar mechanisms of bladder physiology in normal and children with enuresis. RESULTS: Several mechanisms are associated with enuresis including nocturnal urine volume, nocturnal functional bladder capacity, spontaneous bladder contractions and the inability to arouse to the stimulus of a large and/or contracting bladder. There is adequate evidence for children

Psychosocial implications of nocturnal enuresis.

Primary nocturnal enuresis (PNE), a biobehavioral problem affecting approximately 5,000,000 children in the United States, is among the most bothersome and frustrating disorders of childhood. Negative psychosocial consequences are common, secondary to the impact of enuresis on family members and others. The enuretic child may be at increased risk for emotional or even physical abuse from family members and may experience stress related to fear of detection by peers. These factors contribute to the loss of self-esteem that the enuretic child often experiences. Fortunately, a number of treatment

Enuresis: analysis of 100 cases.

One hundred children with enuresis were studied to find out various factors responsible for this condition. Enuresis was more frequent in first born, service class and bottle fed children. There was a significant role of stress factors in causation of enuresis. We found a higher frequency of behavioral symptoms among children with enuresis. There was no significant correlation between enuresis and sex, education of parents, social class, sleep patterns, age of mother at marriage and intellectual grades of the children. Worm infestations, giardiasis, amebiasis and urinary infection were seen in

Development of a novel scale for primary monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis: Nocturnal Enuresis Symptom Score (NESS).

INTRODUCTION: Monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis (MNE) is defined as urinary incontinence occurring during sleep in absence of daytime lower urinary tract symptoms. International Children Continence Society (ICCS) classifies treatment success as complete response (100 % resolution of symptoms), partial response (50-99 % reduction in symptoms) and no response (<50 % resolution of symptoms). There are no symptom scores for management or follow-up for MNE in the existing literature. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aimed to develop a symptom score for monitorization of MNE treatment. STUDY DESIGN:

Vasopressin and hypercalciuria in enuresis: a reappraisal.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypotheses that vasopressin deficiency or hypercalciuria are important in polyuric and non-polyuric bedwetting, as nocturnal polyuria is a pathogenetic factor in enuresis responsive to antidiuretic therapy with desmopressin. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Vasopressin deficiency has been implicated as a cause of nocturnal polyuria, but measurements of vasopressin in plasma have given contradictory results, because the hormone is released in pulses. Urinary levels reflect the secretion over longer periods. Hypercalciuria has also been proposed as a pathogenetic factor. Twenty-eigh

Pathophysiology and impact of nocturnal enuresis.

Nocturnal enuresis in children is not a psychogenic disorder. It is caused by a hereditary delay in maturation of the somatic mechanisms (reduction of nocturnal urine production and a normal arousal to a full bladder) which prevent the child from wetting the bed. Traditionally, doctors treating bedwetting children have used an expectant attitude, because nocturnal enuresis has been looked upon as self-limiting and harmless. According to recent research this is not true. More than 5% of children and 0.5% of the adult population report nocturnal enuresis, meaning that 10% of enuretic children wi

Enuresis and hyperventilation response in the EEG.

A total of 420 enuretic children aged between four and 15 years and 100 controls were examined by EEG in order to determine their hyperventilation response, which is considered to be a non-specific sign of brain dysfunction or of cortical instability as a result of delayed maturation. It was found that an increased hyperventilation response occurred mainly among children with primary enuresis (bed-wetters from birth). This was true even if the children had a 'uropathy'. It was also commoner among the children with pathological EEGs at rest. The results for those with secondary enuresis (later

Enuresis: a functional equivalent of a fetish.

The split in the ego between consciousness and unconsciousness which sometimes eventuates in fetishism can also be clinically manifested in sleep disturbances, depersonalization, dejà vu and a variety of alterations in the sense of reality. It is suggested that this same split comprises the central dynamic mechanism in enuresis. The sleep disturbance which accompanies enuresis involves a confusion between waking and sleeping, sometimes taking the form of a dream that one is awake. Three patients(adult males) revealed in the course of their analyses that they suffered from childhood enuresis ac

Nocturnal enuresis among primary school children.

To determine the prevalence and personal and family risk factors for nocturnal enuresis (NE) among primary school children in Al-Mukalla City, Yemen, we conducted a cross-sectional survey using a self-administered, three-part structured questionnaire involving 832 school children aged 6 - 15 years between 2007 and 2008. We assessed participants' socio-demographic factors, family characteristics and factors related to the presence of NE. The mean age of the children was 11.5 (±2.7) years. The overall prevalence of NE was 28.6%, with a predominance of girls, and the prevalence decreased with inc
