Unequal residential exposure to air pollution and noise: A geospatial environmental justice analysis for Ghent, Belgium.

Following the growing empirical evidence on the health effects of air pollution and noise, the fair distribution of these impacts receives increasing attention. The existing environmental inequality studies often focus on a single environmental impact, apply a limited range of covariates or do not correct for spatial autocorrelation. This article presents a geospatial data analysis on Ghent (Belgium), combining residential exposure to air pollution and noise with socioeconomic variables and housing variables. The global results show that neighborhoods with lower household incomes, more unemplo

New approach methodologies for contaminant risk assessment in environmental justice communities: Let's not miss the opportunity.

New approach methodologies (NAMs) are emergent tools and methods that are increasingly being viewed by the regulatory and scientific community as ones that can support or even replace traditional (ie, conventional) approaches for use in chemical hazard, exposure, and risk assessments. New approaches ultimately promise to improve the efficiency, cost-effectiveness, resource requirements, and ethical challenges associated with conventional assessment approaches. Despite escalating activity in the field, less common in the 'NAMs' discourse is the consideration of the specific priorities and needs

A descriptive study of the association of Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales with environmental justice of a Southern urban county, USA.

BACKGROUND: Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) present a threat to global public health systems, yet the environmental contribution to antibiotic resistance prevalence has been understudied. The risk of antibiotic-resistant bacterium proliferating may be greater in neighborhoods experiencing environmental injustice (e.g., contaminated water, housing density). We examine spatial correlations between CRE detection rates and the Environmental Justice Index (EJI) across census tracts in an urban county. METHODS: We analyzed data from electronic health records of two major health systems

A benefit allocation model for the joint prevention and control of air pollution in China: In view of environmental justice.

The benefit allocation of fair and justice is an inevitable guarantee for the long-term operation of the joint prevention and control of air pollution (JPCAP). The ignorance of interest demands of various governance subjects in the existing benefit allocation mechanism results in the widespread "free rider" behavior in the joint control and unsatisfactory effects of JPCAP. Given this, it is imperative to build a reasonable benefit allocation model. The innovation of this paper is proposing a benefit allocation model of JPCAP to achieve the symmetry between control costs and benefits based on e

Comparative analysis of urban and rural soil lead levels in Connecticut, USA: outcomes for environmental justice perspectives.

Lead (Pb) exposure is a critical environmental and public health issue and may be examined through the lens of environmental justice (EJ). This study presents a comparative analysis of residential soil Pb levels and spatial patterns in an urban (City of Hartford) and rural (Town of Mansfield) setting in Connecticut, USA in relation to EJ socioeconomic indices. Soil Pb levels were measured using portable X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy at 100 and 102 residential and park sites in Hartford and Mansfield, respectively. Geospatial interpolation revealed significantly higher Pb levels in Hartford,

Spatial disparities and environmental justice in PM2.5 exposure among urban E-bike Commuters:A case study of Changsha.

Amid increasing residential segregation, disparities in resource allocation and environmental health faced by vulnerable groups have drawn widespread attention. Electric bicycles (E-bikes), favored by low-income populations due to their affordability, convenience, and eco-friendliness, have gained widespread popularity, particularly in China. However, whether E-bikes can reduce daily air pollution exposure and mitigate associated environmental health inequalities remains unclear. This study integrates land use regression and space syntax to quantify spatial disparities in PM2.5 exposure among

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in drinking water in Southeast Los Angeles: Industrial legacy and environmental justice.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent chemicals of increasing concern to human health. PFAS contamination in water systems has been linked to a variety of sources including hydrocarbon fire suppression activities, industrial and military land uses, agricultural applications of biosolids, and consumer products. To assess PFAS in California tap water, we collected 60 water samples from inside homes in four different geographic regions, both urban and rural. We selected mostly small water systems with known history of industrial chemical or pesticide contamination and that ser

Urban Tree Canopy and Environmental Justice: Examining the Distributional Equity of Urban Tree Canopy in Guangzhou, China.

Rapid urbanization has led to a series of environmental problems that are harmful to the physical and mental health of residents. Not only can increasing urban tree canopy (UTC) improve sustainable city development, but it can also effectively promote the quality of life for residents; however, the uneven spatial distribution of UTC can also bring about social justice problems. Currently, there are few studies related to the justice of UTC distribution in China. Based on this, the paper adopts object-oriented image classification technology to interpret and extract UTC data from satellite imag

Air Pollution and Environmental Justice in Latin America: Where Are We and How Can We Move Forward?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Air pollution in Latin America is a major environmental threat, yet few studies have focused on aspects of environmental justice with regard to air pollution in the region. We examined the scientific literature and described whether and how this issue has been addressed, identify possible gaps in knowledge, and offer suggestions for future research to contribute to policies that seek greater equity concerning air pollution impacts in Latin America. RECENT FINDINGS: There is a limited literature that has addressed issues of environmental justice or environmental health inequ

Where on Earth Are the Earth Sciences? A Mixed-Methods Study of Environmental Justice Research Trends and Roadblocks to Engagement.

Environmental justice (EJ) research relies on expertise from multiple disciplines to address community-specific health risks and inequities. EJ is an inherently transdisciplinary framework, yet the expansion of EJ scholarship has not occurred evenly across academic disciplines. Understanding disciplinary contributions is essential for identifying gaps in knowledge and practice. This research employed a mixed-method approach to investigate EJ research trends and roadblocks to engagement. Study 1 used a bibliometric analysis of Scopus-indexed publications and found that Environmental science and

Analysis of proposed carbon capture projects in the US power sector and co-location with environmental justice communities.

In recent years, there has been a proliferation of new federal investments and policy support for "carbon management" technologies, such as carbon capture and storage (CCS), as a strategy to mitigate the United States' greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs). The equity implications of deploying these technologies-particularly their impacts on low-income communities and communities of color, or environmental justice (EJ) communities-have been understudied. A prominent example of this is seen in the US power sector, where CCS has been proposed as a means to mitigate the carbon dioxide emissions of foss

Which decreases in air pollution should be targeted to bring health and economic benefits and improve environmental justice?

BACKGROUND: Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exposure entails large health effects in many urban areas. Public measures aiming at decreasing air pollution are often designed without targeting an explicit health benefit. Our objective was to investigate the health and economic benefits and the social inequalities in exposure resulting from several scenarios of reduction of PM2.5 exposure, in order to support decisions about urban policies. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In the French conurbations of Grenoble and Lyon (0.4 and 1.4 million inhabitants, respectively), PM2.5 yearly average exposure was esti

THRIVEair: A community-based air monitoring network design in a pollution-burdened Philadelphia neighborhood to advance environmental justice.

BACKGROUND: In 2019, an explosion at the Philadelphia Energy Solutions Refinery, one of the largest urban oil refineries in the U.S., led to its shuttering and transition into redevelopment. Local fenceline communities, previously impacted by refinery operations, expressed concern about air toxics, particularly benzene, released during the decommissioning process. To monitor volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including benzene, in fenceline communities, we created THRIVEair, a partnership between environmental justice organization Philly Thrive and Drexel University scientists. Participatory and Spatial Analyses of Environmental Justice Communities' Concerns about a Proposed Storm Surge and Flood Protection Seawall.

In response to increasing threats from sea-level rise and storm surge, the City of Charleston, South Carolina, and the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) propose constructing a seawall around the Charleston peninsula. The proposed seawall will terminate close to lower wealth, predominantly minority communities. These communities are identified as environmental justice (EJ) communities due to their history of inequitable burdens of industrial and urban pollution and proximity to highways and US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) designated Superfund sites. The present study documents communi

Sí se puede: using participatory research to promote environmental justice in a Latino community in San Diego, California.

Community-based participatory research (CBPR) increasingly is seen as a potent tool for studying and addressing urban environmental health problems by linking place-based work with efforts to help effect policy-level change. This paper explores a successful CBPR and organizing effort, the Toxic Free Neighborhoods Campaign, in Old Town National City (OTNC), CA, United States, and its contributions to both local policy outcomes and changes in the broader policy environment, laying the groundwork for a Specific Plan to address a host of interlocking community concerns. Toxic layering and compound extremes: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) exposure in rural, environmental justice copper mining communities.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are pervasive environmental pollutants with significant impacts on ecosystems and public health. This study aimed to characterize PFAS concentrations in an environmental justice community impacted by active/legacy copper mining, compounded by wildfires and flash floods. Additionally, the study explored the (re)mobilization of PFAS and co-occurrence with metal(loid)s following these events. Twenty-eight PFAS compounds in 35 residential and 8 control surface soil samples were analyzed via liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LCMS/MS). The max

Modeling and Analysis of Air Pollution and Environmental Justice: The Case for North Carolina's Hog Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations.

BACKGROUND: Concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) emit pollutants that can cause negative impacts on human health. The concentration of hog production in North Carolina raises concerns regarding the disproportionate exposure of vulnerable communities to air pollution from CAFOs. OBJECTIVES: We investigated whether exposure to gaseous ammonia (NH3) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) (in 2019) differs between subpopulations by examining demographics, including race/ethnicity, age, educational attainment, language proficiency, and socioeconomic status. METHODS: We used an Air Monitoring Statio

Social inequalities in residential exposure to road traffic noise: an environmental justice analysis based on the RECORD Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVES: To explore social inequalities in residential exposure to road traffic noise in an urban area. METHODS: Environmental injustice in road traffic noise exposure was investigated in Paris, France, using the RECORD Cohort Study (n = 2130) and modelled noise data. Associations were assessed by estimating noise exposure within the local area around participants' residence, considering various socioeconomic variables defined at both individual and neighbourhood level, and comparing different regression models attempting or not to control for spatial autocorrelation in noise levels. Spatial patterns of air pollutants and social groups: a distributive environmental justice study in the phoenix metropolitan region of USA.

Quantifying spatial distribution patterns of air pollutants is imperative to understand environmental justice issues. Here we present a landscape-based hierarchical approach in which air pollution variables are regressed against population demographics on multiple spatiotemporal scales. Using this approach, we investigated the potential problem of distributive environmental justice in the Phoenix metropolitan region, focusing on ambient ozone and particulate matter. Pollution surfaces (maps) are evaluated against the demographics of class, age, race (African American, Native American), and eth

Air Pollution-Related Health Impacts on Individuals Experiencing Homelessness: Environmental Justice and Health Vulnerability in Salt Lake County, Utah.

Experiences of homelessness, although widely varied, are characterized by extensive time in public spaces, often outdoors. However, there has been little empirical research about the ways in which environmental factors affect individuals experiencing homelessness (IEHs). Therefore, the purpose of this study was to use an environmental justice approach to understand how cardiopulmonary health of IEHs is affected by episodic poor air quality in Salt Lake County. It was hypothesized that people who had experienced unsheltered homelessness and those who had been experiencing homelessness for longe
