Within the classification of different Listeria species according to present knowledge, this study investigates the sources and distribution of both the known "classical" species of Listeria as well as the recently added species: L. monocytogenes, L. innocua, L. ivanovii, L. welshimeri, L. seeligeri, L. grayi and L. murrayi. For this purpose 573 isolates from the environment, food, healthy carriers and patients suffering from listeriosis were selected out of a total of approximately 6000 strains originating from all parts of the globe which are maintained at the Listeria Culture Collection of

AIMS: To evaluate different methods that are useful for rapid and definitive discrimination of Bacillus anthracis from other bacteria of the Bacillus cereus group in environmental samples like letters claimed to contain anthrax spores.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Characterized strains and bacteria from environmental samples were analysed by microbiological and molecular methods (PCR and restriction analysis). Environmental isolates often shared several microbiological features with B. anthracis, e.g. lack of beta-haemolysis and phospholipase C activity, and only the gamma phage assay was specific fo

There is still a lack of understanding of H2S formation in agricultural waste, which leads to poor odour prevention and control. Microbial sulfate reduction is a major process contributing to sulfide formation in natural and technogenic environments with high sulfate and low oxygen concentration. Agricultural waste can be considered a low-sulfate system with no obvious input of oxidised sulfur compounds. The purpose of this study was to characterise a microbial community participating in H2S production and estimate the microbial sulfate reduction rate (SRR) in manure slurry from a large-scale

Microorganisms are ubiquitous in nature, and microbial activities are closely intertwined with the entire life cycle system and human life. Developing novel technologies for the detection, characterization and manipulation of microorganisms promotes their applications in clinical, environmental and industrial areas. Over the last two decades, terahertz (THz) technology has emerged as a new optical tool for microbiology. The great potential originates from the unique advantages of THz waves including the high sensitivity to water and inter-/intra-molecular motions, the non-invasive and label-fr

The development of paleomicrobiology with new molecular techniques such as metagenomics is revolutionizing our knowledge of microbial evolution in human history. The study of microbial agents that are concomitantly active in the same biological environment makes it possible to obtain a picture of the complex interrelations among the different pathogens and gives us the perspective to understand the microecosystem of ancient times. This research acts as a bridge between disciplines such as archaeology, biology, and medicine, and the development of paleomicrobiology forces archaeology to broaden

Ten bacterial isolates capable of growth on tetracyanonickelate(II) [K2[Ni(CN)4]] (TCN) as the sole nitrogen source were isolated from soil, freshwater, and sewage sludge enrichments. Seven of the 10 were identified as pseudomonads, while the remaining 3 were classified as Klebsiella species. A detailed investigation of one isolate, Pseudomonas putida BCN3, revealed a rapid growth rate on TCN (generation time, 2 h), with substrate removal and growth occurring in parallel. In addition to TCN, all isolates were able to utilize KCN, although the latter was significantly more toxic; MICs ranged fr

The spreading of antibiotic resistant bacteria in the environment is a threat to human health but little is known about the transmission of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli from the hospital and municipal sewage to the water basin and to the air at the WWTPs (Waste Water Treatment Plants) area and their surroundings. Accordingly, it seems particularly interesting to trace the fate of these bacteria and their genes encoding antibiotic resistance in both untreated sewage from hospitals, and in sewage after different stages of purification, and finally to examin

UNLABELLED: The processing environment is a source of spoilage fungi in cultured dairy products. However, fungi within the built environment (i.e., non-food contact and architectural structures) of dairy processing facilities have not been well characterized. This study identified the seasonal and spatial variations in fungal identity, relative abundance, and diversity within the built environment of three cultured dairy facilities. Furthermore, we compared fungal genera in spoiled cultured dairy products to fungal genera in their facility's built environment. We used internal transcribed spac

Two hundred seventy-nine cases of human listeriosis (92 pregnancy-related cases and 187 non-pregnancy-related cases) caused by a serovar 4b and phagovar 2389:2425:3274:2671:47:108:340 strain were identified in France between March and December 1992. Epidemiological investigations included a case-control study (not described here) and microbiological analyses of foods. Results of the case-control study and characterization of food isolates identified pork tongue in jelly, a ready-to-eat meat product, as the major vehicle of this outbreak, and to a lesser extent, delicatessen products contaminat

One hundred and twenty-two food, clinical, and veterinary strains of Listeria monocytogenes were examined for the presence of plasmids. Twenty-five (20%) contained plasmids, which varied from 1.3 to 66 MDa in size. Of 10 strains of other Listeria species (L. innocua, L. ivanovii, L. welshimeri, L. seeligeri, L. grayi, and L. murrayi) examined, seven (70%) contained plasmids, varying from 38 to 53 MDa. No strains with multiple plasmids were found. Plasmids of identical size were isolated from related strains in some, although not all, cases. The presence of a plasmid in a strain was not related

The incidence and prevalence of nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) lung disease (LD) cases are rising, with diagnosis and treatment proving difficult. With the preponderance of viable NTM in both natural and engineered environments, the understood route of human infection is through environmental exposures. In an effort to decrease the occurrence of NTM LD, methods to reduce environmental NTM exposures are of great interest to people with infection and the clinical community. In 2013, coauthor Falkinham summarized methods known at the time to reduce exposure to LD-causing Mycobacterium avium.

Inorganic cyanide and nitrile compounds are distributed widely in the environment, chiefly as a result of anthropogenic activity but also through cyanide synthesis by a range of organisms including higher plants, fungi and bacteria. The major source of cyanide in soil and water is through the discharge of effluents containing a variety of inorganic cyanide and nitriles. Here the fate of cyanide compounds in soil and water is reviewed, identifying those factors that affect their persistence and which determine whether they are amenable to biological degradation. The exploitation of cyanides by

A Triazophos-degrading strain, Klebsiella sp. E6, was identified by soil enrichment technology from the soil sampled from the vicinity of a factory manufacturing Triazophos (TAP). The nutrient requirement of the strain is simple. It can use TAP as the sole sources of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus. Comparison of the degradation rates revealed that the strain degraded TAP most effectively when TAP was used as a sole nitrogen source. No inhibition effect occurred when TAP concentration was high as 1000 mg/L in the case of TAP was used as the sole nitrogen source. Analysis of the intermediates o

BACKGROUND: The dematiaceous fungi cause numerous infections in both immunocompetent as well as immunocompromised individuals. The route of infection is either respiratory or subcutaneous/ocular implantation. Despite the rising incidence of these infections, very few studies have been conducted to decipher the seasonal and geographic variation of environmental burden of these fungi.
METHODS: We conducted environmental surveillance (both vegetation and air) to determine seasonal spore burden of dematiaceous fungi in urban and rural regions of North India, namely Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and

The hospital environment is widely recognised as a source of microorganisms that collectively constitute the so-called "hospital microbiota". The aim of this study was to investigate this microbiota, providing as accurate a picture as possible of the actual level of environmental contamination within the hospital. We conducted a 2-year surveillance study in a large acute-care hospital to map the microbiological profiles of the various wards and identify areas requiring improvement. The analysis revealed substantial contamination of surfaces by ESKAPEE microorganisms, well-known causes of healt

Chromium has been and is extensively used worldwide in multiple industrial processes and is routinely discharged to the environment from such processes. Therefore, this heavy metal is a potential threat to the environment and to public health, primarily because it is non-biodegradable and environmentally persistent. Chromium exists in several oxidation states, the most stable of which are trivalent Cr(Ill) and hexavalent Cr(VI) species. Each species possesses its own individual chemical characteristics and produces its own biological effects. For example, Cr (Ill) is an essential oligoelement

This study investigated the use of an aqueous hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HPCD) shake extraction in predicting microbial mineralisation and total loss of [3-(14)C]phenyldodecane associated activity in soils spiked with cable insulating oil; phenyldodecane represents a major constituent of cable insulating oil. Direct comparisons were made between freshly spiked and aged soils, and following composting. Soil was spiked with [3-(14)C]phenyldodecane (10mg kg(-1)) and stored in microcosms and aged for 1, 23, 44, 65, 90 and 153 d. At each sample time point, a variety of analyses were performed

Cigar tobacco fermentation is a microbially driven process that transforms raw tobacco leaves into a product with distinctive sensory attributes, yet the current understanding of the microbial roles in this process remains fragmented between descriptive community surveys and isolated mechanistic studies, with beneficial and detrimental microbial functions rarely integrated into a unified risk-benefit assessment. This review critically examines the microbiology of cigar fermentation through a dual-axis framework organized around beneficial metabolic functions and detrimental spoilage potential,

Coccidioides immitis and Coccidioides posadasii contribute to the development of Valley Fever. The ability of these fungal pathogens to evade the host immune system creates difficulty in recognition and treatment of this debilitating infection. In this review, we describe the current knowledge of Valley Fever and approaches to improve prevention, detection, and treatment.
