Infrastructure as Environmental Health Policy: Lessons from the Clean School Bus Program's Challenges and Innovations.

This study evaluates the 2022 rollout of the Clean School Bus Rebate Program (CSBRP) to understand how eligibility rules and data practices shape funding distribution across communities with varying needs. We ask whether more accurate maps can improve environmental funding outcomes or whether challenges stem from how agencies define and apply eligibility criteria. Using logistic regression and dasymetric mapping, we find that prioritization criteria helped direct funds to underserved areas, but reliance on school district boundaries introduced inconsistencies that affected program reach. Supporting Healthy Eating: Synergistic Effects of Nutrition Education Paired with Policy, Systems, and Environmental Changes.

A healthy diet is central to health and well-being throughout life. The United States and many other countries are undergoing an obesity epidemic and experiencing serious diet-related health problems. There exists a misalignment and wide gap between national dietary recommendations and dietary patterns of Americans, and thus, a need to find new ways to improve diet and nutrition. This article posits that nutrition education combined with policy, systems, and environmental (PSE) change approaches is more effective than either strategy in isolation and both are needed to reduce the global burden

How economic policy uncertainty and geopolitical risk affect environmental pollution: does renewable energy consumption matter?

Climate change traps heat, affecting various species in previously dry areas. Climate change brought on by emissions of greenhouse gases exacerbates problems such as severe storms, earthquakes, epidemics, and food distribution. The group of developed and developing countries, the world's biggest carbon emitters and most significant economies, is expertly planning to lessen its environmental challenges and contribute to achieving Sustainable Development Goals 7 and 13 set by the United Nations. This study uses the novel econometric methodologies of the dynamic ordinary least square (DOLS) estim

Exploring mitigation strategies for smog crisis in Lahore: a review for environmental health, and policy implications.

Smog, a combined form of atmospheric pollutants, dust, and smoke with fog under sunlight, poses a significant threat to human health and the environment by reducing visibility. Urban air pollution exposure can cause respiratory issues like asthma, pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and cardiovascular diseases like heart attacks, high blood pressure, lung cancer, and other health issues like diabetes, cognitive decline, and even birth defects. As smog has become a growing global issue with severe impacts on public health, ecosystems, and economies, this study analyzes its

MicroEnv: A microsimulation model for quantifying the impacts of environmental policies on population health and health inequalities.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) recognise the critical need to improve population health and environmental sustainability. This paper describes the development of a microsimulation model, MicroEnv, aimed at quantifying the impact of environmental exposures on health as an aid to selecting policies likely to have greatest benefit. Its methods allow the integration of morbidity and mortality outcomes and the generation of results at high spatial resolution. We illustrate its application to the assessment of the impact of air pollution on health in London. Simulations are performed at Lo

The impact of environmental regulation on employment: an empirical study of China's Two Control Zone policy.

Environmental regulations affect employment through productivity output and factor substitution. This paper employs a difference-in-differences (DID) method to investigate the effect of China's Two Control Zones (TCZ) policy on the urban employment in 287 cities from 1994 to 2009. We apply the DID method to two time points: 1998 for policy issuance and 2000 for the policy implementation. From the results of analyses on full-sample cities, the TCZ policy did not contribute to increasing total urban employment. Moreover, a negative impact on employment resulted from sulfur dioxide and acid rain

Water pollution and environmental policy in artisanal gold mining frontiers: The case of La Toma, Colombia.

Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) is the largest anthropogenic source of mercury emissions globally. Concern over mercury pollution increases due to its long-term impacts on human health and aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Using a participatory research methodology, we gathered social and behavioral information regarding daily practices and water usage by an ASGM community in Suárez, Colombia. Based on this information, we identified 18 sampling sites of water sources commonly used by the community. The samples were analyzed for total mercury, total coliforms, pH, electrical con

Domestic Facemask Waste Policy Based on Environmental Ethics in the Covid-19 Pandemic: Urgency and Challenges.

INTRODUCTION: The Covid-19 pandemic greatly affected various aspects of life. To prevent and control its spread, people are morally and legally obliged to wear face facemasks. The use of facemasks brings many waste problems. However, the Indonesian policy on facemask waste management does not regard the massive environmental consequences, as the amount of domestic facemask waste reaches hundreds of tons daily with limited management capacity application. Hence, this study aims to assess current issues and policies on facemask waste from the perspective of environmental ethics. METHODS: This r

Monetizing shipping emission reduction: Environmental benefit analysis of domestic emission control areas policy 2.0 in China.

Shipping is a major contributor to anthropogenic emissions, exerting complex effects on both the environment and climate. To improve the air quality of coastal areas, China adopted an upgraded policy on domestic emission control areas (DECA 2.0) for shipping in December 2018, which expanded the geographical scope of ECAs from three designated heavy-traffic coastal regions to the entire 12 nautical mile-territorial seas and also introduced more stringent ship emission requirements. Based on data from the Automatic Identification System, this study first evaluates the environmental effects of sh

Strategic effects of future environmental policy commitments: climate change, solar radiation management and correlated air pollutants.

We study the effects of environmental policy commitments in a futuristic world in which solar radiation management (SRM) can be utilized to reduce climate change damages. Carbon and sulfur dioxide emissions (correlated pollutants) can be reduced through tradable permits. We show that if nations simultaneously commit to carbon permit policies, national SRM levels rise with carbon quotas. Alternatively, if they simultaneously commit to SRM policies, the global temperature falls with each unit increase in the global SRM level. A nation always wishes to be a leader in policymaking, but prefers car

Environmental Determinants of Early Childhood Caries: A Narrative Synthesis of Observational Evidence and Implications for Global Policy.

Early childhood caries (ECC) remains a significant global health challenge, disproportionately affecting marginalized populations. While traditional research emphasizes behavioral and biological risk factors, emerging evidence highlights the critical role of environmental determinants. This narrative synthesis aims to highlight the role of environmental determinants as a risk factor for ECC pathogenesis. Environmental toxins (e.g., lead, perfluoroalkyl acids, tobacco smoke, air pollution) disrupt enamel development, impair salivary function, and compromise immune responses, directly increasing

The Impacts of Global Climate Change and Environmental Security on Fruits and Vegetables-A Policy-Technology Nexus Perspective.

Global climate change exerts a systematic threat to the yield stability, nutritional quality, pest and disease control, and supply chain security of the fruit and vegetable industry via multiple ways, including altering temperature, carbon dioxide concentration, rainfall, ocean acidification, and soil deterioration. To tackle climate change, actions like carbon pricing and low-carbon technologies not only promote emission reduction but also impose pressure and economic difficulties on farmers, producers, logistics, transport, etc. This review, from an integrated view of "policy-technology rela

Effects of public policy interventions for environmentally sustainable food consumption: a systematic map of available evidence.

BACKGROUND: The global food system is inflicting substantial environmental harm, necessitating a shift towards more environmentally sustainable food consumption practices. Policy interventions, for example, information campaigns, taxes and subsidies and changes in the choice context are essential to stimulate sustainable change, but their effectiveness in achieving environmental goals remains inadequately understood. Existing literature lacks a comprehensive synthesis of evidence on the role of public policies in promoting sustainable food consumption. Our systematic map addressed this gap by

Rapid Assessment of Environmental Health Impacts for Policy Support: The Example of Road Transport in New Zealand.

An integrated environmental health impact assessment of road transport in New Zealand was carried out, using a rapid assessment. The disease and injury burden was assessed from traffic-related accidents, air pollution, noise and physical (in)activity, and impacts attributed back to modal source. In total, road transport was found to be responsible for 650 deaths in 2012 (2.1% of annual mortality): 308 from traffic accidents, 283 as a result of air pollution, and 59 from noise. Together with morbidity, these represent a total burden of disease of 26,610 disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). A

Developing environmental health indicators as policy tools for endemic fluorosis management in the People's Republic of China.

Drinking groundwater containing naturally occurring elevated concentrations of fluoride has given rise to extensive dental and skeletal fluorosis affecting many millions of people in China. This paper describes three sets of indicators useful for environmental and human fluorosis management purposes, namely, descriptive indicators (the past), response indicators (the present) and performance indicators (the future). Each of the sets of indicators was further detailed following the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) pressure-state-response model modified to include an
