Environmental, Health, and Psychological Factors Predict Alcohol Sipping in Childhood: A Machine Learning Analysis of the ABCD Study.

OBJECTIVE: Extant research has focused on the risk factors for alcohol use in adolescence, but little work has examined these in childhood. Early alcohol sipping, defined here as sipping alcohol by ages 9 to 10, may be a unique and informative developmental precursor to future problematic alcohol use. This study employed machine learning to rank risk factors linked to early alcohol sipping by importance. METHOD: Data from a subset of the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development℠ (ABCD) Study sample were used (n = 10,707 children ages 9-10 years old; 48.1% girls). Two state-of-the-art machine le

The Developmental Timing but Not Magnitude of Adolescent Risk-Taking Propensity Is Consistent Across Social, Environmental, and Psychological Factors.

PURPOSE: Risk-taking is thought to peak during adolescence, but most prior studies have relied on small convenience samples lacking participant diversity. This study tested the generalizability of adolescent self-reported risk-taking propensity across a comprehensive set of participant-level social, environmental, and psychological factors. METHODS: Data (N = 1,005,421) from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health were used to test the developmental timing and magnitude of risk-taking propensity and its link to alcohol and cannabis use across 19 subgroups defined via sex, race/ethnicity, s

Differences in behavior, psychological factors, and environmental factors associated with participation in school sports and other activities in adolescence.

This study examined whether participation in school team sports, exclusively or in combination with other extracurricular activities, is associated with higher levels of psychosocial functioning and healthy behavior than participation in other extracurricular activities alone or nonparticipation. The study sample includes 50,168 ninth grade public school students who completed an anonymous, voluntary statewide survey in 2001. Students were classified into four groups based on their participation in sports and other activities (such as clubs, volunteer work, band, choir, or music lessons): neit

Differential effects of forest environmental perception on psychological well-being: the moderating role of perceived stress in national parks.

INTRODUCTION: The rapid urbanization and exposure to unnatural environments has helped to escalate global mental health problems. Interventions involving forests have been demonstrated to be therapeutic, but current studies are mostly concerned with direct effects, not taking into consideration environmental perception and individual differences. Specifically, the moderating effects of stress in determining the psychological well-being benefits of forest settings are not well studied. This study therefore examined whether perceived stress moderates the association between forest environmental

Happiness and Its Association With Suicide Ideation and Attempt in Korea: The Roles of Socio-Environmental, Psychological, and Health-Related Factors.

BACKGROUND: The association between happiness and suicide behaviour across different gender and age groups remains unclear, with few studies identifying potential confounding or mediating factors that explain this association. We aimed 1) to examine the association of happiness with suicide ideation/attempt and 2) to assess the relative contribution of potential factors in explaining the associations in South Korea. METHODS: We used data from the Korea Community Health Survey 2021, with 214,070 respondents aged over 20 years. Happiness was measured by using Cantril's ladder of life satisfacti

Medical histories and psychological profiles of middle-aged women with and without self-reported illness from environmental chemicals.

BACKGROUND: Cacosmia, which is a predictor of cognitive deficits in industrial samples, is a core symptom of several controversial syndromes. Previous studies of cacosmic populations have considered only psychiatric but not medical or family histories of identified patients. METHOD: This questionnaire survey study examined subjective characteristics of illness from chemical odors, sensitivity to chemicals, psychological and stress profiles, and medical, psychiatric, and family health histories of 28 middle-aged women with cacosmia in self-reported poor health attributed to chemicals (MCS), 17

Active Travel to School, Psychological Distress, Health Risk Behaviors, and Social-Environmental Factors Among Filipino Adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Active travel to school-walking or biking to school-is a valuable source of physical activity with benefits for physical and mental health. This study examined the association of active travel to school with psychological distress, health risk behaviors, and social-environmental factors among Filipino school-going adolescents. METHODS: The current study analyzed data from the 2011, 2015, and 2019 Global School-based Health Survey. RESULTS: Multivariable logistic regressions showed that those who engaged in frequent active travel to school were more likely to report loneliness a

From social-environmental stress to core psychological dysfunction and suicidality in first-episode depressed adolescents: Network perspective.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent depression involves complex interactions among social-environmental stressors, protective psychological resources, and psychological dysfunction. Traditional models inadequately capture cross-level interactions between these domains. AIMS: We employed multilevel symptom network analysis to elucidate how childhood trauma, adolescent life events, and resilience are linked to core psychological dysfunction and suicide ideation in adolescent depression, with core psychological dysfunction defined as impairments in cognition, emotion, behavior and social functioning that cha

Genetic, psychological, and environmental factors are uniquely associated with onset of alcohol use in the adolescent brain cognitive development (ABCD) study.

Alcohol use during adolescence poses a significant public health problem due to its potential long-term consequences on both physical and mental health and increased risk for developing substance use disorders later in life. Both individual (e.g., genetic liability, neural functioning, personality features) and environmental (e.g., parenting, school environment) features play an important role in accelerating or buffering the progression of early alcohol consumption. This study used data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study (Release 5.1; N = 11,868) to provide a compreh

How collective action produces psychological change and how that change endures over time: A case study of an environmental campaign.

Previous research on collective action has suggested that both intra- and intergroup interactions are important in producing psychological change. In this study, we examine how these two forms of interaction relate to each other over time. We present results from a longitudinal ethnographic study of participation in an environmental campaign, documenting endurance and prevalence of psychological change. Participants, locals (n = 14) and self-defined activists (n = 14), connected enduring psychological changes, such as changes in consumer behaviour and attitudes to their involvement in the envi

Differences in psychological and somatic symptom cluster score profiles between subjects with Idiopathic environmental intolerance, major depression and schizophrenia.

Idiopathic Environmental Intolerance (IEI) has been associated with psychogenic factors and an increased number of comorbid psychiatric disorders such as depression and anxiety disorder. The purpose of the current study was to examine a possible overlap of psychological and somatic symptoms between subjects with IEI and patients with major depression and schizophrenia as well as to specify characteristic differences. The different symptom clusters included symptoms of chemical intolerance, neurotoxicity and psychological distress as well as measurements of mental health such as anxiety, depres

Building psychological resources for green organizational citizenship behavior: a broaden-and-build perspective on empowerment, environmental passion, and leaders' emotional intelligence.

Green organizational citizenship behavior is essential for translating corporate sustainability strategies into everyday work practices. Although green transformational leadership has been widely examined as an antecedent of employee green behavior, less is known about why it encourages employees to go beyond formal job duties and when this effect becomes stronger. Drawing on Broaden-and-Build Theory, this study develops a psychological resource model linking team-level green transformational leadership to green organizational citizenship behavior through employees' cognitive-motivational and
