Citizen science for monitoring the spatial and temporal dynamics of malaria vectors in relation to environmental risk factors in Ruhuha, Rwanda.

BACKGROUND: As part of malaria prevention and control efforts, the distribution and density of malaria mosquitoes requires continuous monitoring. Resources for long-term surveillance of malaria vectors, however, are often limited. The aim of the research was to evaluate the value of citizen science in providing insight into potential malaria vector hotspots and other malaria relevant information, and to determine predictors of malaria vector abundance in a region where routine mosquito monitoring has not been established to support vector surveillance. METHODS: A 1-year citizen science progra

Systematic and state-of the science review of the role of environmental factors in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig's Disease.

The etiology of sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is still unclear. We evaluate environmental factors suspected to be associated with ALS for their potential linkage to disease causality and to model geographic distributions of susceptible populations and expected cases worldwide. A PRISMA systematic literature review was performed 2021. Bradford Hill criteria were used to identify and rank environmental factors and a secondary review of ALS diagnoses in population studies and ALS case or cohort studies was conducted. Prevalence rate projection informed estimates of impacted regions

Determining Environmental Factors That Influence the Occurrence of Sarcoptic Mange in Bare-Nosed Wombats (Vombatus ursinus) Using Citizen Science Data.

Sarcoptic mange is a significant welfare and conservation issue in a diverse range of mammalian species, wombats being some of the most impacted. Cases have been observed in bare-nosed (Vombatus ursinus) and southern hairy-nosed (Lasiorhinus latifrons) wombats but not the northern hairy-nosed wombat (Lasiorhinus krefftii). Here, we map the prevalence and model habitat suitability for sarcoptic mange that infests wombats across Australia. Presence-only data was isolated from wombat observation records entered into the citizen science project Wombat Survey and Analysis Tool (WomSAT). Environment

A Citizen Science Approach to Identifying Indoor Environmental Barriers to Optimal Health for under 5s Experiencing Homelessness in Temporary Accommodation.

The first five years of life are critical for optimal growth, health, and cognitive development. Adverse childhood experiences, including experiencing homelessness, can be a risk factor for multiple health issues and developmental challenges. There is a dearth of data collected with and by families with children under age five living in temporary accommodation due to experiencing homelessness (U5TA) describing indoor environmental barriers that prevent U5TA from achieving and maintaining optimal health. The aim of this study was to address this current gap using a citizen science approach. Fif

(Dis)connected by design? Using participatory citizen science to uncover environmental determinants of social connectedness for youth in under-resourced neighbourhoods.

BACKGROUND: Social isolation and loneliness are a growing public health concern. Inadequacies in neighbourhood social infrastructure can undermine social connectedness, particularly for youth, who are dependent on their local environments yet often marginalized from public spaces and city planning. Integrating citizen science with participatory action research, the Youth.hood study set out to explore how neighbourhood built environments help or hinder social connectedness from the understudied perspective of youth in under-resourced and racialized communities. METHODS: Youth (n = 42) from thr

Experimental studies on the biological effects of chronic low dose-rate radiation exposure in mice: overview of the studies at the Institute for Environmental Sciences.

This review summarizes the results of experiments conducted in the Institute for Environmental Sciences for the past 21 years, focusing on the biological effects of long-term low dose-rate radiation exposure on mice. Mice were chronically exposed to gamma rays at dose-rates of 0.05, 1 or 20 mGy/day for 400 days to total doses of 20, 400 or 8000 mGy, respectively. The dose rate 0.05 mGy/day is comparable to the dose limit for radiation workers. The parameters examined were lifespan, neoplasm incidence, antineoplasm immunity, body weight, chromosome aberration(s), gene mutation(s), alterations i

Applications of Systems Science to Understand and Manage Multiple Influences within Children's Environmental Health in Least Developed Countries: A Causal Loop Diagram Approach.

Least developed countries (LDCs) are home to over a billion people throughout Africa, Asia-Pacific, and the Caribbean. The people who live in LDCs represent just 13% of the global population but 40% of its growth rate. Characterised by low incomes and low education levels, high proportions of the population practising subsistence living, inadequate infrastructure, and lack of economic diversity and resilience, LDCs face serious health, environmental, social, and economic challenges. Many communities in LDCs have very limited access to adequate sanitation, safe water, and clean cooking fuel. LD

How "Green" is Your Functional Material? Assessing Environmental Impacts of Multi-Step Synthetic Protocols in Material Sciences at Various Technology Levels.

Environmental awareness is increasing worldwide, driven by alarming developments such as the climate change. Life cycle assessment (LCA) provides a standardized framework to evaluate environmental impacts, for example in the material sciences. While LCAs are widely used for mature technologies, application in early-stage research remains limited despite its high potential for sustainable improvements. This article introduces a broadly applicable formalism referred to as Environmental Synthesis Radar (ESR) to systematically evaluate the environmental impacts of multi-step chemical synthesis pro

The Impact of Rhinovirus, Syncytial Respiratory Virus and Helminth Infection on the Risk of New-Onset Asthma and Other Allergic Conditions-A Systematic Review for the EAACI Guidelines on Environmental Science for Allergic Diseases and Asthma.

This systematic review evaluated the association between lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI) in infancy with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), rhinovirus (RV) or infestation with helminths and the risk of developing asthma and allergic diseases. The risk of bias was assessed with ROBINS-E, and the certainty of evidence (CoE) with GRADE. Meta-analysis applied a random-effects model. RSV LRTI is likely associated with an increased risk of developing asthma by age 7 (OR 3.02, 95% CI 2.23-4.09; I2 = 98%; moderate CoE). The impact on wheezing, atopic dermatitis (AD), and allergic rhinitis is

Unclearing the air: Data's unexpected limitations for environmental advocacy.

What makes one dataset powerful for civic advocacy, and another fall flat? Drawing from a citizen science project on environmental health, I argue that there is an underacknowledged quality of datasets-their topology-that shapes the social, cultural, and political possibilities they can sustain or subvert. Data topologies are formal qualities of a dataset that connect data collectors' intentions with the types of calculations that can and cannot be performed. This configures how numerical arguments are made, and the sociotechnical imaginaries those arguments sustain or subvert. The citizen sci

The Role of ES&T in Advancing Environmental Toxicology and Chemical Risk Assessment: Past, Present, and Future.

Environmental contamination poses risks to all components of the ecosystem─humans and wildlife─yet toxicological research and regulatory assessment remain largely compartmentalized by discipline and organismal focus. We look back on 60 years of toxicological research published in Environmental Science and Technology (ES&T) and analyze how the field has evolved, what role ES&T has played in this evolution, and suggest a path forward for the future. Chemicals, complex mixtures, and their transformation products act across interconnected biological taxa, including humans, that share conserved mol
