BACKGROUND: Mayflies are basal winged insects of crucial importance for the understanding of the early evolution of Pterygota. Unlike all other insects, they have two successive winged stages, the subimago and the imago. Their forewings feature so-called bullae, which are desclerotized spots in the anterior main veins. Up to now, they have been considered to play a major role in wing bending during flight.
RESULTS: We investigated bullae by multiple methods to reveal their structure and arrangement and to gain new information on the evolution of insect flight. Bullae are mostly present in the

Two species of Caenis with straight forceps with a terminal tuft of spines are described from northern Australia. Male imagoes and nymphs of C. hanleyi n. sp. are described from reared material from the Alligator Rivers Region in the Northern Territory and C. binda n. sp. is described only from male imagoes collected from streams in the Wet Tropics of Queensland. C. hanleyi differs from C. binda by the structure of the forceps with C. binda being longer and narrower with longer apical spines. These are the first records of the genus Caenis in Australia.

The nymph and reared male and female of a new ephemerellid species, which was collected from southern China and named Teloganopsis setosa Zhou, sp. n., are described. The nymph is unique because of its long and dense setae on labrum, mandibles, maxillae, labium, and forelegs as well as the elongated segments II of labial palpi and expanded paraglossae. The male can be differentiated from close relatives by its larger penis lobes with dorsolateral projections, and the more pigmented tergum IV and caudal filaments. The nymph described in this paper represents a new adaptive and ecological type i

The new species Gilliesia ratchaburiensis sp. nov. is described based on male and female imagos (some of them reared from nymphal stages), nymphs and eggs collected in western Thailand. The nymph of Gilliesia, which is described for the first time, has bifid gills, a dense patch of setae on the ventral side of the glossae, no posterolateral spines on abdominal segment VIII, maxillary palpi 3-segmented and very reduced maxillary canines. Compared to congeners, the male imagos of the new species have penis lobes more straight and with the apical portion bent laterally but not ventrally, and fema

Two new species of Miroculis Edmunds, 1963 (Ephemeroptera: Leptophlebiidae) are described, diagnosed and illustrated based on adults and/or nymphs collected in Brazil and Colombia. Both species share an uncommon genitalia morphology, which includes a long penis that is curved at base and a long styliger plate. In the case of the species from Brazil, which is also described based on nymphs, gills are devoid of the characteristic lateral lobes found in the other species of the genus.

Here, we studied Askola specimens sampled from streams in the Caatinga and Atlantic Forest ecoregions of Brazil. We associate nymphs and adults of A. mucuge using molecular tools (COI sequences). The nymph of this species can be differentiated from the two other known nymphs of the genus by the internal denticle medially located at the external incisor of the left mandible and by abdominal terga without marks. In addition, Automatic Barcode Gap Discovery revealed the possibility of cryptic species under the name of Askola froehlichi, suggesting three independent lineages. Our results reduce th

The accumulation of two mercury compounds--HgCl(2) and CH(3)HgCl--by Hexagenia rigida (burrowing mayfly nymphs) from contaminated sediments was investigated experimentally. Three exposure periods were selected: 7, 14 and 28 days. Results reveal a high capacity of this species for Hg accumulation and considerable differences between the two chemical forms of the metal. Thus, the amount of total mercury accumulated after 28 days' exposure would be 60 times greater for the organic form if the two compounds were initially added to the sediment in the same concentrations. No significant growth inhi

Three species within the genus Epeorus s. l. Eaton, viz., Epeorus latifolium Uéno, 1928, E. L-nigrum Matsumura, 1931, and E. uenoi (Matsumura, 1933), whose types were collected from Sapporo City, Japan, and neighboring areas, have been confused for a long time. In this study, intensive field sampling and investigation of museum specimens revealed E. latifolium and E. L-nigrum are indeed distinct species, while E. uenoi is a synonym of E. latifolium. Thus, this study partially resolves the taxonomic confusion surrounding Japanese E. latifolium-like species. However, numerous closely related spe

The taxon Procloeon Bengtsson 1915, which is treated here at a genus rank, is characterized by one greatly enlarged denticle on the posterior margin of each cercomere in the distal part of the cercus. For the first time, this character is illustrated for Procloeon (Pseudocentroptiloides) shadini (Kazlauskas 1964), Procloeon macronyx (Kluge & Novikova 1992), P. heterophyllum (Kluge & Novikova 1992), P. pulchrum (Eaton 1885), P. albisternum (Novikova in Tshernova et al. 1986), P. pennulatum (Eaton 1870), P. chinensis (You & Gui 1995) and P. maritimum (Kluge 1983). Tricorythus meenakshi sp. n., is described based on all the stages from Tamil Nadu, Southern India. This new Indian species is most closely related to the Afrotropical species T. discolor Burmeister and T. tener Kluge. The new species can be separated from others in the genus by: In male imago, i) body dorsally with a colorless median stripe from head to abdomen; ii) femur and base of the tibia of all legs dark, rest mostly colorless; and iii) penis shape; and in the larva, i) body slender with a light median stripe as in adult; ii) protoptera dark in both sexes; iii) mouthparts details; iv) t

This study addresses the Linnean and Wallacean deficits within the Polymitarcyidae Banks, 1900 in the state of Rondônia, Brazil. This state is significantly affected by anthropogenic activities such as agriculture and highway construction. Despite extensive research on the Polymitarcyidae in Brazil, particularly in the northern region, there has been a notable absence of data from Rondônia, creating a major gap in our understanding of its distribution. Collections conducted in Rondônia in 2016, 2018, and 2022 in 10 sites have recorded 13 species and the discovery of three new species: Campsuru

After the worst mine-tailing dam disaster which occurred in Minas Gerais state, Brazil, it was necessary to understand the extent of the biodiversity loss. Thus, based on legal obligations, a monitoring of the fauna and flora along the Rio Doce basin was developed. From this large study, surprisingly, two undescribed psammophilous mayfly species were collected. Given the environmental disaster, and the particular concern with species that inhabiting sandy bottom, the two new species may be already threatened. Considering the reported circumstances, our objective is to described the new species

The male imagoes, larvae, and eggs of Ameletus allengaensis sp. nov. and Ameletus sirotskii sp. nov. from the Russian Far East are described. Based on the structure of the male genitalia, the imago and larvae of A. allengaensis sp. nov. and A. sirotskii sp. nov. are similar to those of A. camtschaticus, but the discovery of these new species and separation from A. camtschaticus were confirmed by studies of the morphology of the larvae and male imago, as well as molecular analysis. Identity of various developmental stages of the new species were confirmed by analysis of the mitochondrial gene c

Thraulodes marianoi sp. nov. is described, illustrated and diagnosed based on a single male imago from a subtropical forest at Pico do Marumbi State Park, in the protected area of Mananciais da Serra, state of Paraná, Brazil. Based on the dark coloration of legs and the large dark spot at base of forewing, T. marianoi sp. nov. is similar to species of the niger-group (Peruvian Amazonia) and to T. basimaculatus Giordano Domínguez, 2005, a species endemic to Bolivia. The new species can be distinguished from all other species in the genus Thraulodes Ulmer, by the combination of following charact

The genus Isonychia Eaton, 1871 is widely distributed across the Holarctic and Oriental regions. However, no representatives of this genus have been reported from southwestern China, a region known for its high biodiversity. Here, we described and illustrated Isonychialatias sp. nov., a new species recently collected from Guizhou Province, southwestern China, across all developmental stages. The imagos of this new species exhibit some uncommon characters within Isonychia, such as brown mid- and hindlegs, and pale stripes on the thorax. To explore the phylogenetic status of this new species wit

The male imago of Rhoenanthus sapa Nguyen et Bae, 2004, which had not been previously reported, was reared for the first time from mature nymph in China. Morphologically, they have lighter bodies and wings and simpler genitalia than congeners. Combined with its nymphal features (relatively short and curved mandibular tusks), this species links the genera Rhoenanthus Eaton, 1881 and Potamanthodes Ulmer, 1920 together and throws some new light on the evolution of the family Potamanthidae.
