Macrophage Immunometabolism in Epicardial Adipose Tissue and Obesity-Related Atrial Fibrillation.

Obesity is a crucial risk factor for atrial fibrillation (AF). The underlying mechanism is partly related to increased epicardial adipose tissue (EAT). EAT directly contacts the adjacent cardiac myocardium where immune and metabolic activities interact. Obesity induces inflammatory and metabolic signals within EAT, which directly influence atrial structure and electrical remodeling. However, the specific immunometabolic mechanisms linking EAT macrophages to atrial arrhythmogenesis remain unclear. We highlight evidence that nutrient excess, hypoxia, oxidative stress, and adipocyte-derived infla

Epicardial Adipose Tissue and Long-Term Outcomes in CMR-Confirmed MINOCA.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) serves as a pivotal diagnostic tool for myocardial infarction with nonobstructive coronary arteries (MINOCA) and enables the precise quantification of epicardial adipose tissue (EAT). OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the predictive value of EAT for long-term major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in CMR-confirmed MINOCA and to determine whether EAT provides incremental prognostic utility. METHODS: This single-center retrospective study enrolled 117 patients with a working diagnosis of MINOCA who demonstrated an ischemic myocardial inju

Epicardial adipose tissue and idiopathic deep venous thrombosis: an association study.

OBJECTIVE: Epicardial fat (EpiF) reflects abdominal visceral adiposity and visceral fat plays an important role in the development of an unfavorable metabolic and atherosclerosis risk profile. An increased cardiovascular risk has been evidenced in patients with deep venous thrombosis (DVT). Advancing age is characterized by alterations of body fat mass and function In this study we studied the association between EpiF, DVT, age, obesity and other atherosclerosis risk factors. METHODS AND RESULTS: 77 patients were recruited: 44 men and 33 women, 38 without DVT (65.9 ± 16.3 years, range 26-92 y

Epicardial adipose tissue in patients with and without COVID-19 infection.

BACKGROUND: Acute COVID-19 infection frequently affects the cardiovascular system and causes acute myocardial injury. Epicardial Adipose Tissue (EAT), a visceral adipose tissue surrounding the myocardium and coronary arteries, has unique paracrine and endocrine effects, modulating the heart's inflammatory environment. Systemic inflammation stimulates TNF-α and Interleukin-6 secretion from EAT, contributing to cytokine storms and intensifying systemic responses. We aimed to determine whether EAT amount differs in patients with and without acute COVID-19 infection and myocardial injury. METHODS

Elevated asprosin levels in epicardial adipose tissue: Implications for coronary artery disease.

INTRODUCTION: This study investigates the role of the adipokine asprosin in coronary artery disease (CAD) by comparing its levels in epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) and serum between individuals with and without CAD. Asprosin is known to be involved in conditions such as insulin resistance and obesity, both of which are risk factors for CAD. METHODS: The study included 25 CAD patients and 25 non-CAD patients undergoing open-heart surgery for valve issues. EAT samples were collected during surgery, and the mRNA levels of the FBN-1 gene were measured using qRT-PCR, while the protein levels of a

Periodontitis, epicardial adipose tissue and coronary events: the Swedish Cardiopulmonary Bioimage Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In the relationship between periodontitis and coronary heart disease (CHD), the mechanistic role of subclinical atherosclerosis remains incompletely understood. This study examines whether subclinical atherosclerosis mediates the periodontitis-incident CHD association; how a specific periodontitis phenotype modifies subclinical coronary atherosclerosis; and whether periodontitis is associated with epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) attenuation as a marker of inflammation. METHODS: Data from the Swedish CArdioPulmonary bioImage Study (SCAPIS) were linked to national registers

Obesity and diabetes are major risk factors for epicardial adipose tissue inflammation.

BACKGROUNDEpicardial adipose tissue (EAT) directly overlies the myocardium, with changes in its morphology and volume associated with myriad cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. However, EAT's immune structure and cellular characterization remain incompletely described. We aimed to define the immune phenotype of EAT in humans and compare such profiles across lean, obese, and diabetic patients.METHODSWe recruited 152 patients undergoing open-chest coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), valve repair/replacement (VR) surgery, or combined CABG/VR. Patients' clinical and biochemical data and EAT

Epicardial adipose tissue differentiates in patients with and without coronary microvascular dysfunction.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD) is a common disorder, leading to symptoms similar to obstructive coronary artery disease and bears important prognostic implications. Local inflammation is suggested to promote development of CMD. Epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) is a local visceral fat depot surrounding the heart and the coronary arteries, modifying the inflammatory environment of the heart. We compared EAT in patients with and without CMD. METHODS: We retrospectively included consecutive patients undergoing diagnostic coronary angiography as well as transthoraci

Epicardial adipose tissue predicted prolonged QTc interval in patients with arterial hypertension.

Introduction: It is important to identify those at higher risk for ventricular arrhythmia among hypertensive patients. Epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) leads to electromechanical changes in the heart by endocrine and paracrine effects with cytokines and mediators. Higher amount of EAT carries the risk of QT prolongation. Therefore, we investigated the association between EAT thickness and QTc interval in patients with arterial hypertension. Methods: A total of 230 patients who previously diagnosed with arterial hypertension between February 2019 to March 2020 were included in the study. Patient
