Epidemiologic study of dermatophytoses in Salamanca (Spain).

An epidemiologic study of the dermatophytoses in Salamanca (Spain) from 1973 to 1976 was performed. Dermatophyte species were identified in 224 patients with clinical tinea infections; 31 bovines, 18 rodents and 70 soil samples. The prevalence of Trichophyton verrucosum and Epidermophyton floccosum was strikingly high in relation to other statistics. The most common clinical forms were tinea corporis and tinea cruris. Tinea capitis by anthropophilic species was uncommon.

Dermatophytosis of the diaper area.

Six cases of dermatophytosis of the diaper area due to either Epidermophyton floccosum or Trichophyton rubrum are described herein. The clinical and laboratory features of these patients and those reported in the literature are highlighted. Dermatophytosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of rashes in the diaper area. Most standard remedies for diaper rash will not be effective or may exacerbate diaper dermatophytosis. Recognition of this condition by the clinician will lead to earlier rational treatment and may avoid the delay caused by therapy.

Tinea cruris: diagnostic confusion due to isolation of Candida albicans alone.

The diagnostic importance of the isolation of Candida albicans from a skin lesion is often uncertain. In a 68-year-old man from whose lesions only C. albicans was originally isolated Trichophyton rubrum and Epidermophyton floccosum were also isolated when the growth of the yeast was inhibited in a selective medium. The use of this selective medium, casamino acids erythritol albumin agar, ensures the proper interpretation of the significance of the presence of C. albicans in skin lesions.

Dermatophytes in Iceland.

Prior to 1982, no reliable information was available on prevailing dermatophyte species or infections in Iceland. In 1983-1984 fungal cultures performed on 96 patients revealed that Trichophyton tonsurans was the most common isolate, followed by Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Trichophyton rubrum. There were no cases of tinea capitis and tinea corporis was rare, but the most common sites of infection were the feet and toenails.

The areal extent of dermatophyte infection.

After stripping with vinyl tape, dermatophytes may be cultured throughout the depth of the stratum corneum. In the present study skin strippings were used to investigate the horizontal spread of the dermatophyte infection. In five cases of tinea cruris and in twenty-two cases of tinea corporis, fungi could be cultured not only from the visible lesion, but in the majority of cases also from the normal-looking skin up to 6 cm from the margin of the lesion. No relationship could be found between the size and age of the lesion and the invasion of surrounding, normal-looking skin.

The spectrum of dermatophytes in northern Malawi (Africa).

Between 1.5% and 2.5% of the population in Karonga District, northern Malawi (Africa), were diagnosed as having tinea faciei, corporis, inguinalis or cruris in the course of a total population survey carried out between 1987 and 1989. With regard to the relative frequency distribution of dermatophytes, the main findings were the rarity of Trichophyton rubrum (around 1%) and the predominance of Microsporum audouinii (57%) in this part of Africa. In the genital area Epidermophyton floccosum was the most common isolate (56%).

Superficial fungal infections in children.

Superficial fungal infections can involve the hair, skin, and nails. Most affected children are healthy, although immunosuppression is a risk factor for more severe presentation. Causative organisms typically are members of the Trichophyton, Microsporum, and Epidermophyton genera (dermatophytes), can be acquired from other infected humans, animals, or soil, and illicit a host inflammatory response. Nondermatophyte infections include pityriasis versicolor. In this article, the most common clinical presentations, diagnostic recommendations, and treatment algorithms for dermatophyte and nondermat

Tinea cruris in female prostitutes.

Tinea cruris is a dermatophytosis that mainly affects males. Infections in females are rare, and there are no known data on the frequency of tinea cruris in female prostitutes. We describe seven female prostitutes with tinea cruris with on age range of between 19-34 years (mean 25.3). Each prostitute had a mean of 50 sexual partners per month. Four Trichophyton mentagrophytes (57.1%), 2 T rubrum (28.6%), and 1 Epidermophyton floccosum (14.3%) isolates were cultered. Tinea cruris transmission is mainly indirect, but direct contact may serve to transmit the disease in some cases, and the spread

Dermatophytes and dermatophytoses in the Milan area between 1970 and 1989.

Between 1970 and 1989 we examined 13,019 patients with dermatophytoses in the Milan area, Northern Italy. The results obtained during the 1980-89 period were compared with those obtained in the years 1970-79. From the data collected, tinea corporis emerged as the most frequently observed dermatophytosis, followed by tinea pedis and unguium. As far as dermatophytes are concerned, the dermatological pattern is dominated by Microsporum canis and Trichophyton rubrum. Other species, such as Epidermophyton floccosum, T. mentagrophytes, M. gypseum, T. violaceum, T. verrucosum, T. tonsurans and T. sch

Dermatophytosis: the management of fungal infections.

Dermatophytosis is an infection of the hair, skin, or nails caused by a dermatophyte, which is most commonly of the Trichophyton genus and less commonly of the Microsporum or Epidermophyton genera. Tinea capitis, tinea pedis, and onychomycosis are common dermatologic diseases that may result from such an infection. The treatment of fungal infections caused by a dermatophyte has been successful when treated with oral or topical antifungal agents. Terbinafine, itraconazole, and fluconazole are oral antimycotics that are effective in the treatment of superficial mycoses, although, depending on th

Prevalent fungal pathogens and antifungal resistance in Lebanon: A scoping review.

Fungal infections are an increasing public health concern in Lebanon, particularly among immunocompromised individuals. Common pathogens include Candida albicans, C. glabrata (Nakaseomyces glabrata), C. parapsilosis, C. tropicalis, and emerging C. krusei (Pichia Kudriavzevii), alongside dermatophytes such as Trichophyton, Microsporum, and Epidermophyton species. Aspergillus fumigatus, A. flavus, A. niger, and A. tubingensis are the predominant causes of respiratory and systemic infections. Although azoles, echinocandins, and polyenes remain key antifungal agents, rising resistance particularly
