OBJECTIVE: To describe the urologic manifestations of Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD). ECD is a rare multisystem disorder of non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis. In addition to classic long bone involvement, the retroperitoneum is a well-established site of disease infiltration. Herein, we present the urologic manifestations and outcomes of ECD in a large series of patients.
METHODS: We identified 47 patients diagnosed with ECD between 1996 and 2012 at our institution. The medical records and imaging for these patients were reviewed for urologic involvement, including perirenal soft tissue encase

BACKGROUND: Exfoliative glaucoma (XFG) is typically classified as a high-pressure type of secondary open-angle glaucoma that develops as a consequence of exfoliation syndrome (XFS). Exfoliation syndrome is an age-related, generalized disorder of the extracellular matrix characterized by production and progressive accumulation of a fibrillar exfoliation material (XFM) in intra- and extraocular tissues. Exfoliation material represents complex glycoprotein/proteoglycan structure composed of a protein core surrounded by glycosaminoglycans such as heparan sulfate (HS) and chondroitin sulfate (CS).

Erdheim-Chester disease is a disseminated non-Langerhans' cell histiocytosis involving multiple organs with characteristic sclerotic musculoskeletal lesions. This is the report of the case of a 53-year-old woman with extensive and progressive pulmonary disease. Computed tomography scans revealed diffuse infiltrative lung disease. Thoracoscopic lung biopsy and a biopsy of the right femur lesion were performed. The histopathology revealed that she had non-Langerhans' cell histiocytosis; Erdheim-Chester disease. The characteristic lesions of Erdheim-Chester disease, including involvement of the o

Pituitary morphologic changes in patients with Erdheim-Chester disease have not been described in detail. We report here the histologic and immunohistochemical findings in the autopsy obtained pituitary of a 35-yr-old woman with extensively disseminated Erdheim-Chester disease. The posterior lobe was completely replaced by xanthogranulomatous infiltrates, providing an explanation for the patient's diabetes insipidus. The anterior lobe was intact and immunohistochemistry demonstrated expression of GH, TSH, FSH, LH, and alpha subunit within the normal range. A clinically observed decrease of ant

Erdheim-Chester disease (lipoid granulomatosis) is a rare type II (non-Langerhans cell) histiocytosis with systemic manifestations. The disease causes nonspecific disturbances in the function of multiple extraosseous organs, most commonly the eyes, lungs, pituitary gland, and kidneys. Diagnosis is usually made on the basis of radiologic evidence of cortical expansion of long bones. While the osseous and systemic changes have been well documented in the current literature, pathologic changes in the myocardium have not been well characterized since Erdheim and Chester's first description of this

BACKGROUND: Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD) is a rare histiocytosis, histologically characterized by xanthogranulomatous inflammation. It may affect the bones, heart, lung, liver, kidneys, retroperitoneum, brain, and, rarely, the orbit. In the majority of patients, orbital infiltration is bilateral.
CASE: A 61-year-old man presented with bilateral exophthalmos and progressive loss of visual function caused by chorioretinal folds and papillary swelling due to retrobulbar pseudotumor. The computed tomogram of the abdomen showed retroperitoneal thickening, leading to the interpretation of multifoc

A 63-year old man had a history of diabetes insipidus, arthralgias and myalgias, weight loss, relapsing fever and malaise. Increased uptake of Tc-99m was found predominantly in distal antebrachia, in distal femurs and in both trochanters and tibias on the bone scintigraphy. The chest radiograph showed reticulonodular pattern and the high resolution computed tomography (HRCT) scans revealed diffuse infiltrative lung disease with small multiple nodules and widening of interlobular septs. Videothoracoscopic lung biopsy and biopsy of tibial lesion were perfomed. The histopathologic examination pro

Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD) is a rare non-Langerhans' cell histiocytosis that may present with pulmonary symptoms. The condition seems to be nonfamilial and typically affects middle-aged adults. Radiographic and pathologic changes in the long bones are diagnostic, but patients often present with extraskeletal manifestations. Advanced pulmonary lesions are associated with extensive fibrosis that may lead to cardiorespiratory failure. The clinical, radiologic, and pathologic features of six patients with ECD with lung involvement are presented. The patients were three men and three women (mean

In a 57-year-old woman dizziness, staggering, altered mental status, and bilateral pain and cramping in the lower extremities developed. Extensive investigation yielded evidence of renal and long-bone lesions, with the latter being primarily metaphyseal and diaphyseal. Needle biopsy of the tibial marrow revealed the presence of lipid-laden histiocytes, osteosclerosis, and osteoclasts. A diagnosis of Erdheim-Chester disease was made; this is the 16th known case of the disease. The patient responded well to steroid therapy but later was readmitted and ultimately died of extensive infiltrates in

The ophthalmological changes in two patients with Erdheim-Chester disease are described. These consist of exophthalmos, ophthalmoplegia, xanthelasma, optic disc swelling, blindness due to optic atrophy, retinal striae, and bilateral enhancing orbital masses on CT scan. The clinical and histopathologic findings of Erdheim-Chester disease are reviewed and the manifestations in two patients with orbital change are presented. This is believed to be the first report describing the ophthalmological manifestations of Erdheim-Chester disease. Our observations support the view that Erdheim-Chester dise

Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD) is a rare form of non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis. There are few documented cases in the medical literature. Here, we present an infrequent case of a 53-year-old patient who presented with cutaneous xanthelasma and a gradual decline in general health characterized by asthenia, anorexia, and chronic dyspnea over the last 5 years. Chest, abdominal, and pelvic CT scans revealed distinct findings suggestive of ECD, including peri-renal fat infiltration resulting in the "hairy kidney" sign, hepatosplenomegaly, renal artery ostial stenosis, pneumopericardium thickenin

Aim: To present the case of a 57-year-old male with progressive bilateral proptosis. Material and method: The patient presented with bilateral proptosis and strength deficiency on the upper limbs. During hospitalization, the progression was unfavorable; proptosis progressed, causing a severe loss of vision in the left eye (from 0.8 Snellen to NLP). Results: The imagistic investigation revealed bilateral infiltration of the orbits, infiltrative lesions to the mediastinum and the abdomen. The patient was referred to neurosurgery for further management. Surgical orbital decompression was performe

Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD) is a rare non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis with a putative neoplastic and inflammatory nature. The disease is driven by mutations in proto-oncogenes such as BRAF and MEK, while immune-mediated mechanisms contribute to disease development and progression. The clinical presentation of ECD is highly heterogeneous, ranging from smouldering unifocal forms to multiorgan life-threatening disease. Almost any organ can be involved, but the most common lesions include long-bone involvement, retroperitoneal fibrosis, interstitial lung disease, pericardial and myocardial inf

Erdheim-Chester disease is a rare histiocytic neoplasm with a wide range of clinical manifestations. Due to its rarity and protean characteristics, this condition often presents a diagnostic challenge. A Caucasian woman in her late 60s presented with unsteadiness, dysphagia and dysarthria. She was initially diagnosed with secondary progressive multiple sclerosis but deteriorated over 2 years with a potential lack of therapeutic response. Subsequent investigations resulted in the diagnosis of Erdheim-Chester disease. She received targeted therapy with BRAF and MAPK-pathway inhibitors. Her initi

Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD) is a very rare and aggressive form of non-Langerhans histiocytosis with unclear pathogenesis. Because of the heterogeneity of clinical presentation, diagnosis is often challenging and delayed. Currently, Interferon alpha is the first line treatment that is associated with a better survival. The prognosis is relatively poor, especially in case of neurological and cardiovascular involvement. Herein, we report the case of a 64-year-old Tunisian female patient presenting an aggressive form of ECD revealed by diabetes insipidus and cerebellar ataxia with a diagnosis de

Erdheim-Chester Disease is a rare form of multiorgan non-Langerhans' cell histiocytosis that affects individuals between the ages of 50 and 70 with an equal distribution among males and females. It is associated with significant morbidity and mortality that is mostly due to infiltration of critical organs. Some of the sites that Erdheim-Chester Disease affects include the skeletal system, central nervous system, cardiovascular system, lungs, kidneys (retroperitoneum), and skin. The most common presenting symptom of Erdheim-Chester Disease is bone pain although a large majority of patients are

Erdheim-Chester disease, although rare, has a wide range of manifestations. It is characterized by the xanthomatous infiltration of tissues by spumous histiocytes, surrounded by fibrosis. The symptoms can vary from bone pain, diabetes insipidus, exophthalmos, xanthelasmas, cardiovascular involvement, bilateral adrenal enlargement, renal impairment, testis infiltration, interstitial lung disease to retroperitoneal fibrosis with perirenal and/or ureteral obstruction. We present eight cases, four of them with only breast involvement and the others with bone, cardiovascular, central nervous system
