Risk Factors of Gout in MDR-TB Patients in Eritrea: A Case-Control Study.

Though the incidence of gout in general population is less than 5% (globally), a study conducted in Eritrea among patients with multidrug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) revealed a higher incidence (25%). Other similar studies conducted elsewhere, however, did not report gout as an adverse effect. It is unknown why a higher incidence of gout is being reported in Eritrea compared to similar studies from other countries. The objective of this study is therefore to explore risk factors for the increased risk of incident gout among MDR-TB patients in Eritrea. A case-control study was conducted in

Prevalence of brucellosis in dairy cattle from the main dairy farming regions of Eritrea.

In order to get a reliable estimate of brucellosis prevalence in Eritrean dairy cattle, a cross-sectional study was carried out in 2009. The survey considered the sub-population of dairy cattle reared in modern small- and medium-sized farms. Samples were screened with the Rose Bengal test (RBT) and positive cases were confirmed with the complement fixation test (CFT). A total of 2.77%(417/15 049; Credibility Interval CI: 2.52% - 3.05%) of the animals tested in this study were positive for antibodies to Brucellaspecies, with a variable and generally low distribution of positive animals at regio

Comparison of three serological tests in the diagnosis of Brucella infection in unvaccinated cattle in Eritrea.

Three serological methods, the Rose-Bengal test (RBT), the complement-fixation test (CFT) and an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (I-ELISA) were compared for the detection of Brucella-infected animals in unvaccinated cattle herds in Eritrea. In this study, 71 herds first were classified as positive or negative for Brucella infection on the basis of at least one animal being seropositive by RBT and CFT. All the 159 RBT-positive samples from the 26 seropositive herds and 214 RBT-negative samples randomly selected from the seropositive herds and from the 45 negative herds were tested fu

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency allelic variants and their prevalence in malaria patients in Eritrea.

INTRODUCTION: Glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is the most common enzymopathy with a relatively high frequency in malaria-endemic regions. In Eritrea, there is scanty knowledge of G6PD deficiency. The aim of the study was to characterize and determine the prevalence of four common G6PD allelic variants. METHODS: Three hundred and fourteen dried blood spot samples from unrelated microscopically diagnosed malaria patient Eritrean ethnic groups living in five zobas (regions) of Eritrea were analysed by PCR-RFLP method to identify the G6PD B, G6PD A (A376G), G6PD A-(G202A), and

Dicephalus Tetrabrachius Parapagus Conjoined Twins: A Case Report from Orotta National Maternity Referral Hospital, Eritrea.

BACKGROUND: Conjoined twins (CT) are exceptionally rare congenital anomalies, with an estimated incidence of 1 in 50,000 to 200,000 births, and they pose substantial diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. When the condition is not identified before labour, the rigid fetal mass may result in absolute mechanical obstruction, frequently leading to severe maternal complications, including uterine rupture. This risk is particularly pronounced in low-resource settings, where delayed presentation and limited access to timely surgical intervention further increase the likelihood of adverse maternal ou

Potential human pathogenic bacteria in five hot springs in Eritrea revealed by next generation sequencing.

Human pathogens can survive and grow in hot springs. For water quality assessment, Escherichia coli or Enterococci are the main thermotolerant enteric bacteria commonly used to estimate the load of pathogenic bacteria in water. However, most of the environmental bacteria are unculturable thus culture methods may cause bias in detection of most pathogens. Illumina sequencing can provide a more comprehensive and accurate insight into environmental bacterial pathogens, which can be used to develop better risk assessment methods and promote public health awareness. In this study, high-throughput I

Promoting major pediatric surgical care in a low-income country: a 4-year experience in Eritrea.

BACKGROUND: Access to pediatric surgical care in many sub-Saharan African countries is strongly limited by lack of medical facilities, adequate transport system, and trained medical and nursing manpower. The mortality rate for major congenital abnormalities remains extremely elevated in this area of the world. Strong efforts have been spent during the past decades to elevate the level of pediatric surgery standards in these countries through cooperation programs acting through periodical medical missions or supporting local medical teaching institutions. This is a report of a partnership betwe

[A complex crisis intervention for a 16-year-old pregnant girl after unaccompanied emigration from Eritrea].

Unaccompanied refugee minors are frequently confronted with multiple, potentially traumatizing events; girls tend to show most profound traumatizations. A 16-year-old female refugee minor was admitted to a child psychiatric ward over the weekend for acute suicidal behavior. The girl had fled unaccompanied from Eritrea and was living in a shelter home for adolescents. Pregnancy (23 weeks p. c.) had been diagnosed the previous day, stemming from several rapes that had occurred on her journey through Sudan and Nigeria. The girl had repressed all signs of the pregnancy from her consciousness. Howe
