Aplastic crisis and erythema infectiosum (fifth disease) revealing a hereditary spherocytosis in a familial human parvovirus infection.

We report two clinical observations on a father and son, who both presented an aplastic crisis at the same time during a human parvovirus (HPV) infection. This erythroblastopenia revealed hereditary spherocytosis in both patients. The son also had a clinical status of erythema infectiosum (fifth disease). This data shows that HPV may be responsible for these two different pathologies in the same person.

[Parvovirus B19 infections. The cause of fifth disease-erythema infectiosum--can also cause aplastic crises, fetal damage and polyarthritis].

Human parvovirus B19 can be an important etiological factor in aplastic crises in patients with chronic hemolytic anemia, in fetal damage, and in acute polyarthritis. B19-virus can only be grown in cell cultures established from human bone marrow, where the virus production occurs in erythroblasts. Parvovirus can cause severe, often fatal, infections in various kinds of animals, also in their fetuses, and many cases of teratogenic changes have been described. The B19-infection is diagnosed by demonstration of either IgM antibodies or B19-DNA in serum samples obtained in the early phases of inf

[Frequency of measles, rubella, dengue and erythema infectiosum among suspected cases of measles and rubella in the State of Pernambuco between 2001 and 2004].

This study had the aim of investigating the frequency of measles, rubella, dengue and erythema infectiosum among suspected cases of measles and/or rubella in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil. A total of 1,161 serum samples collected between 2001 and 2004 were tested for these four viral diseases, using enzyme immunoassays to detect IgM antibodies. Out of this total, 276 (23.8%) samples were positive for one of the four viral diseases analyzed. There were 196 positive cases (16.9%) for dengue, 38 (3.3%) for erythema infectiosum (parvovirus B19), 32 (2.8%) for rubella and 10 (0.9%) for measles. A

A study by means of a new assay of the relationship between an outbreak of erythema infectiosum and non-immune hydrops fetalis caused by human parvovirus B19.

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), used to detect IgG and IgM antibody specific for human parvovirus B19, was established by use of human parvovirus B19 capsid protein VP-1 expressed in Escherichia coli. Paired samples of serum derived from 44 mothers and single samples derived from 24 babies having unexplained non-immune hydrops fetalis (NIHF), were tested by means of the assay. Five cases (11%) of NIHF were suspected of having been induced by intrauterine human parvovirus B19 infection because the samples of maternal serum were positive for parvovirus B19 IgM antibody. Four of the

Conjunctivitis caused by human parvovirus B19 infection.

A 26-year-old woman with erythema infectiosum is reported. She had small faint erythemas on her extremities and congestion of palpebral and bulbar conjunctiva of both eyes. Human parvovirus B19 (B19) DNA was detected in the specimen of the conjunctiva by the polymerase chain reaction. This result suggests that conjunctivitis in erythema infectiosum may cause the B19 infection.

[Childhood diseases with exanthema].

- Due to high vaccination coverage, measles and rubella (German measles) are now rarely seen in the Netherlands, which makes recognition of these diseases difficult. - Measles can also occur in people who have been immunized, as a result of vaccination failure. - Swift recognition of measles and rubella is necessary in order to manage them adequately and to prevent spreading of the disease. - Measles, rubella, and erythema infectiosum ('fifth disease') may result in complications during pregnancy. - Measles, rubella, scarlet fever, erythema infectiosum, and roseola ('sixth disease') can be dif

Human parvovirus B-19: not just a pediatric problem.

Parvoviruses have long been associated with disabling and even fatal illnesses in animals. The discovery of the human parvovirus B-19 in 1975 (1) and subsequent studies of its effects in humans identified this virus as the causative agent of erythema infectiosum ("fifth disease") in children. (2). Erythema infectiosum (EI) is a common, self-limited infectious disorder in children, easily recognized by the classic "slapped cheek" facial erythema and fine reticular rash. Only in the 1980s have further investigations linked HPV B-19 infection with more significant clinical syndromes, among which

Infections caused by parvovirus B19.

Parvovirus B19 was discovered in 1974 by Cossart et al; is a single stranded unenveloped DNA virus, which virion is isometric, uniform and has icosagedral symmetry. B19 infection has been found in all countries, it is almost certainly world-wide in distribution. Infections occurs most frequently in late winter, spring and early summer months and are transmitted by respiratory route. Erythema infectiosum is the most common manifestation of human parvovirus B19 infection, is most commonly acquired between 4 and 10 years of age and at least 60% of adults are seropositive. Erythema Infectiosum is

Common Skin Rashes in Children.

Because childhood rashes may be difficult to differentiate by appearance alone, it is important to consider the entire clinical presentation to help make the appropriate diagnosis. Considerations include the appearance and location of the rash; the clinical course; and associated symptoms, such as pruritus or fever. A fever is likely to occur with roseola, erythema infectiosum (fifth disease), and scarlet fever. Pruritus sometimes occurs with atopic dermatitis, pityriasis rosea, erythema infectiosum, molluscum contagiosum, and tinea infection. The key feature of roseola is a rash presenting af

[Parvovirus B 19 in pregnancy].

The human parvovirus B 19 was discovered in 1975 by Cossart but its etiological association with erythema infectiosum and hydrops of the foetus was proved only in 1984-1985. The objective of the submitted prospective study was to assemble basic findings on the herd immunity of the female population and the risk of infection with this agent during pregnancy. Seropositivity of women of fertile age before the epidemic of parvovirus B 19 in 1993 and 1994 was cca 50%, after the epidemic 70%. Erythema infectiosum is a childhood disease (96% of the cases are children under 14 years of age), but serop

A One-Year-Old Girl With Human Parvovirus B19 Infection and Hypocomplementemia Mimicking Incomplete Kawasaki Disease.

Human parvovirus B19 (B19) is a single-stranded DNA virus that targets erythroid progenitor cells in the bone marrow. B19 causes erythema infectiosum in children, transient aplastic anemia, pure red cell aplasia, hydrops fetalis, and contributes to other illnesses. An association between B19 infection and hypocomplementemia and rheumatoid arthritis has been reported, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We report the case of a 1-year-old Japanese girl with persistent fever, skin rash, transient edema of the extremities, hypoalbuminemia, and hypocomplementemia associated with B19 infec

[Human parvovirus B19 infection in a child suffering from chronic arthritis].

The pathogenicity of the human parvovirus B19 has been disclosed in the last two decades. Different syndromes (erythema infectiosum or hydrops fetalis) can be produced by this virus as well as aplastic crisis in patients with haemolytic anaemia. It is a common infection both in adults and in children. The frequency of joint symptoms in erythema infectiosum is about 8% in childhood but tenfold of it in the adults. However, the arthropathy could be the only symptom without constitutional complains or rash. The joint problems used to be solved after some weeks in most cases but occasionally they

Retrospective study on the influence of human parvovirus B19 infection among children with malignant diseases.

Human parvovirus B19 (B19) is a known cause of erythema infectiosum (fifth disease) and aplastic crisis in patients with hemolytic anemias. When patients with malignant diseases are infected by B19 during chemotherapy, erythroid suppression of bone marrow sometimes occurs. We performed a retrospective investigation of B19 infection among 95 children with malignant diseases in our hospital during the past 14 years. By the method of dot blot hybridization, 9 of 95 patients were found to be positive for B19 DNA during chemotherapy. All 9 patients had reticulocytopenia at the time B19 DNA was dete

An epidemic of aplastic crisis caused by human parvovirus B19.

Human parvovirus B19 has been associated with several diseases. Aplastic crisis in patients with chronic hemolytic anemia, erythema infectiosum, hydrops fetalis and arthritis are among the common diseases caused by this virus infection. In the period between July, 1991, and March, 1992, 48 patients with aplastic crises were hospitalized at Saudi Aramco-Dhahran Health Center, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. Forty-six patients had homozygous sickle cell disease, one had hemoglobin H disease and one had hereditary elliptocytosis. Evidence of recent human parvovirus infection was present in 91% of the case

Human parvovirus B19: historical and clinical review.

Human parvovirus B19 has been associated with disease only for the past few years. First isolated from sera obtained for studies on hepatitis B in 1975, it was not until 1981 that infection with this small, single-stranded DNA virus was related to aplastic crisis associated with hemolytic anemia. A nonspecific viral prodrome, the occurrence in family members, and epidemics of aplastic crisis suggested the infectious etiology. Human parvovirus infection has since been associated with arthritis, erythema infectiosum (fifth disease), fetal death, and hydrops fetalis. Through the use of recently d

Generalized petechial rashes in children during a parvovirus B19 outbreak.

OBJECTIVES: Human parvovirus B19 infection is associated not only with erythema infectiosum (fifth disease) but also, rarely, with purpuric or petechial rashes. Most reports of these atypical rashes describe sporadic cases with skin lesions that have distinctively focal distributions. During a community outbreak of fifth disease, we investigated a cluster of illnesses in children with generalized petechial rashes to determine whether parvovirus was the causative agent and, if so, to describe more fully the clinical spectrum of petechial rashes that are associated with this virus. METHODS: Sys
