Esophageal perforation from external blunt trauma is an exceedingly rare injury. Since 1900, including our five cases, we found 96 reported cases. The most common cause was violent vehicular trauma. The cervical and upper thoracic esophagus was the site of perforation in 82%. In 78% of the cases, there were findings consistent with esophageal injury, but there was a delay in diagnosis in two thirds of these. The diagnostic difficulty was due to lack of a specific symptom complex for esophageal perforation. Often esophageal perforation was not suspected and the symptoms were attributed to the m

Esophageal intramural pseudodiverticulosis and eosinophilic esophagitis are considered uncommon pathologies, while their concurrent presentation is exceptionally rare. We present, to our knowledge, the first case of this dual pathology in the context of an esophageal rupture. A 31-year-old man presented to the clinic for chronic dysphagia, 5 months after being treated conservatively for an esophageal rupture. Endoscopic examination revealed multiple outpouchings along the esophageal wall, the largest measuring 2 mm in diameter. Esophageal biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of eosinophilic esophagi

In this article, we reviewed our experience of treatment of the delayed intrathoracic nonmalignant esophageal perforation employing modified intraluminal esophageal stent. Between February 1990 and August 2006, eight patients were included in this study. Five patients experienced sepsis. The interval time between perforation and stent placement ranged from 36 h to 27 days (average, 8.6 days). Esophageal stenting and throracotomy for foreign body removal were performed in four patients. The remaining four patients underwent stent placement and thoracostomy. Nutrition was initiated through gastr

Idiopathic intramural hematoma of the esophagus is a rare condition associated with Mallory–Weiss syndrome or spontaneous esophageal rupture. It is usually manageable with conservative treatment but, in rare cases, may be complicated by hemothorax or progress to esophageal perforation. We report the case of a 56-year-old man with right-sided paralysis following a stroke who was taking aspirin. He presented with chest pain, a suspected mediastinal tumor, and right pleural effusion on CT. At our hospital, contrast-enhanced CT suggested a mediastinal hematoma with contrast leakage. He had no hema

BACKGROUND: Pneumatic dilatation is one of the most effective methods for treating achalasia. Esophageal perforation is the most serious complication after pneumatic dilatation and has been reported to occur in the range of 1 to 4.3%. The appropriate management of esophageal perforation can range from conservative medical treatment to surgical intervent

Emphysematous esophagitis is an extremely rare disease and there are very few previous reports in the literature. We report a case of emphysematous esophagitis and gastritis with complete affectation of the gastric and esophageal wall at diagnosis. Two surgical interventions were performed due to gastric perforation that was treated in both cases with primary closure. The post-operative recovery was satisfactory. Despite the large emphysematous esophago-gastritis affectation at diagnosis and the presence of gastric perforation, it is safe to perform the same management principles as with emphy

This study aimed to study the factors that are associated with urgent esophagectomy for the treatment of esophageal perforations and the impact of this therapy. A retrospective review of all esophageal perforations treated at a tertiary care hospital from January 1984 to January 2012 was performed. Compiling demographics, cause and site of perforations, time to presentation, comorbidities, radiological tests, the length of perforation, the hemodynamic status of the patient, type of treatment required, and outcomes were performed. Univariate, multivariate, and Cox regression analyses were condu

Perforations of the esophagus require prompt treatment. We have described a patient in whom extrapleural exclusion of a primary repair was used. This procedure, which has not been previously reported, is not technically difficult and is similar to the approach used in the treatment of tracheoesophageal fistula. It allows good mediastinal drainage and prevents pleural soilage by providing an effective buttress to the esophageal repair.

Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic, immune-mediated inflammatory disorder of the esophagus, increasingly recognized for its rising prevalence and potential for severe complications. While EoE typically presents with dysphagia, heartburn, and food impaction, it can remain asymptomatic until serious complications such as esophageal perforation occur. This paper highlights a case of a 38-year-old male with a past medical history of occasional gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and reactive airway disease who presented with acute severe chest pain and dyspnea shortly after eating pizz

EoE-Perforation: Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is commonly observed in children and young adults. Common manifestations of EoE include dysphagia and food impaction in adolescents and adults, whereas children present with failure to thrive, regurgitation, or heartburn and abdominal pain. We describe two patients presenting with esophageal perforation and EoE. Diagnosing perforation promptly is critical to minimize and/or to avoid the multitude of complications resulting from esophageal perforation and to treat EoE because if left untreated, this condition may result in the recurrence of perfor

BACKGROUND: Esophageal perforation is a serious medical condition where a hole or tear develops in the esophagus, the muscular tube that connects the throat to the stomach. Although rare, the condition is potentially life-threatening, as it can lead to infection and inflammation in surrounding tissues, including the mediastinum, pleura, and peritoneum.
METHODS: Between 2014 and 2022, a retrospective study was conducted on cases of esophageal rupture treated at our institution. Eighteen cases were included in the study. Patient data, including age, gender, risk factors, delay in diagnosis, dia

Traumatic esophageal injuries are extremely rare and challenging both from a diagnostic and therapeutic point of view. As regards one of their patients, the authors review the etiology and the pathophysiology of esophageal perforations. They present the case of a 36-year-old patient with a penetrating chest trauma. During an acute surgery, the foreign body was removed from the mediastinum, but in the early postoperative period, an oesophageal rupture was recognized. After conservative management, the patient was discharged from the hospital without any complications 82 days after the injury. C

Esophageal perforation (EP) is a devastating condition. In modern times it is still associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. 62-year-old male patient came to Surgical Department of the First University Clinic of Tbilisi State Medical University on 17.10.2018 15:00. The patient complained of pain in the chest cavity, especially after eating, shortness of breath, fever, chills, weakness. The patient felt pain in the chest cavity after eating 4 days before hospitalization. CT scan revealed pneumomediastinum, extravasation of contrast medium at the level of the 8th thoracic vertebra. E

BACKGROUND: Esophageal trauma is considered one of the most severe lesions of the digestive tract. There is still much controversy in choosing the best treatment for cases of esophageal perforation since that decision involves many variables. The readiness of medical care, the patient's clinical status, the local conditions of the perforated segment, and the severity of the associated injuries must be considered for the most adequate therapeutic choice.
AIM: To demonstrate and to analyze the results of urgent esophagectomy in a series of patients with esophageal perforation.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Esophageal perforation is an uncommon and difficult problem. Delay in diagnosis and appropriate treatment often results in a high morbidity and mortality. Along with the duration after the perforation, several other factors determine the outcome in these patients. The presentation, treatment and outcome of these patients have not been discussed adequately in recent literature.
METHODOLOGY: We analyzed all the patients of esophageal perforation managed by us with respect to their presentation, treatment and outcome.
RESULTS: We have managed 52 patients of esophageal perforati

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Perforation in esophageal carcinoma usually occurs at late stage, and is often accompanied with thoracic infections. Conventional conservative treatments, including parenteral nutritional support and stent placement under the endoscope, can neither eliminate the carcinoma nor control the infection completely. The mortality soon after perforation is fairly high. This study was to investigate the ideal operation patterns and perioperative treatment of perforation in esophageal carcinoma.
METHODS: A total of 41 patients with esophageal carcinoma perforated the right lung

BACKGROUND: Prior reviews of esophageal perforation with delayed recognition have reported mortality rates as high as 66%. We performed a retrospective review of patients with nonmalignant esophageal perforation to assess the outcome of current management techniques.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Charts were reviewed of all patients who were treated for nonmalignant esophageal perforation between 1980 and 1993. They were 23 men and 10 women, mean age 49 +/- 3 years, 19 of whom were diagnosed early (< or = 24 hours) and 14 of whom were diagnosed late (> 24 hours).
RESULTS: Perforations were due to in

Recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa is an inherited mechanobullous disease characterized by skin blistering and esophageal bullae. In response to minor trauma, a split in the dermis or esophageal subepithelium occurs. Esophageal perforation is a rare complication. Because the esophagus is diseased in these patients, we believe that esophagectomy rather than repair is the treatment of choice for esophageal perforations. We report a patient for whom early primary repair failed and esophagectomy was required.
