[Fibrous dysplasia of the frontal and ethmoid sinuses: a case report].

Fibrous dysplasia is a genetic and rare bone disorder affecting the young subject. Its pathophysiology involves genetic mutations leading to defective skeletal development with fibrous and medullary proliferations. Cephalic extremity is involved in one third of cases. We here report a case of surgically treated fibrous dysplasia of the frontal and ethmoid sinuses. The study involved a 31-year-old man presenting with chronic holocranial headaches. Computed tomography (CT) scan showed voluminous bilateral hyperdense expansive process in the frontal and ethmoid sinuses. Surgery was performed on t

Paranasal sinus radiology, Part 2B: ethmoidal sinuses.

The clinician must have a high level of suspicion in order to detect ethmoidal sinus disease. Survey plain film radiographic examination may provide information about gross changes in ethmoidal sinus transparency and the sinus walls. Conventional tomographic study will often aid evaluation of the ethmoidal sinus walls which may be obscured by overlying structures on plain films. Computerized tomography adds a new dimension to ethmoidal sinus study. By revealing not only bone changes but soft-tissue abnormality as well, more complete understanding of the disease process is gained. Computerized

Computerized tomographic findings in mucoceles of the frontal and ethmoid sinuses.

Computerised tomography (CT) is a valuable aid in the investigation of diseases of the paranasal sinuses. Seven patients with surgically proven mucoceles of the frontal or ethmoid sinuses are presented. In each case, proptosis was the main presenting symptom. Although the diagnosis was suspected on plain skull radiographs, CT confirmed the benign nature of the lesion and gave an accurate display of its extent.

Neuroendocrine carcinoma of the ethmoid sinuses treated with radiotherapy alone.

OBJECTIVE: We present the first report of a case of neuroendocrine carcinoma of the paranasal sinuses treated successfully with radiotherapy alone. METHOD: A case report and literature review are presented. RESULTS: Fewer than 50 cases of paranasal sinus neuroendocrine carcinoma have been reported. We present an 82-year-old man referred with recurrent epistaxis. He was investigated by biopsy, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, and was found to have a rare neuroendocrine carcinoma. He declined any surgery or chemotherapy but consented to radiotherapy. Thirty months later, he

Inverted papilloma with osteogenesis in the anterior ethmoid and frontal sinuses.

OBJECTIVE: We report a rare case of new bone formation (osteogenesis) within an inverted papilloma, occurring in the ethmoid and frontal sinuses. METHOD: The histopathological and radiological findings, differential diagnosis, and treatment of tumour-induced osteogenesis are discussed. RESULTS: A 68-year-old man complained of headache and left-sided, purulent rhinorrhoea of five years' duration. On nasal endoscopy, lesions similar to inflammatory nasal polyps were seen. Pre-operative radiological images demonstrated opacification of the left nasal cavity and anterior ethmoid and frontal sinu

[Multiple osteomas in the frontal and ethmoid sinuses: a case report].

Osteomas are the most common benign tumors of the paranasal sinuses. They may be seen at all ages and show a male preponderance. A 54-year-old male patient presented with a complaint of nasal obstruction. Computed tomography of the paranasal sinuses showed three osteomas, nearly 5 mm in size, in both ethmoid sinuses and the right frontal sinus. Inquiry into the Gardner's syndrome was negative. No surgical treatment was performed at the patient's discretion. To our knowledge, the presence of multiple osteomas in the frontal and ethmoid sinuses has not been reported in the English literature.

Adenocarcinoma of the ethmoid sinuses: a case of two primary tumours.

The authors present a case report of a retired furniture worker who initially presented with a mucin-secreting adenocarcinoma of the right ethmoid sinus. He underwent surgical resection, leaving the nasal septum intact, and topical treatment with 5-fluorouracil. He remained disease free. Three years after his initial presentation he was found to have a left nasal polyp on routine examination. This subsequently proved to be a second primary adenocarcinoma. A review of the literature has not shown any other cases of a second primary adenocarcinoma of the ethmoid sinuses.

Pneumosinus dilatans of the frontal and ethmoidal sinuses: case report.

Enlargement of paranasal sinuses with air is rare with less than 50 cases reported in the medical literature. This craniofacial malformation was first described by Meyes in 1898 and its aetiology still remains unknown. Local pain, ocular alterations, anosmia, headache and cosmetic disturbances are the most common symptoms. We present a case of pneumosinus dilatans diagnosed in a male, 8 years of age. He presented with left fronto-orbital bossing that enlarged slowly until he was 12 years old, at which point its growth appeared to increase dramatically. Computerized tomography revealed an enlar

Indications for the surgical treatment of osteomas of the frontal and ethmoid sinuses.

Sixty-one patients with an osteoma of the frontal or ethmoid sinuses have been studied. The following indications for surgical removal of these osteomas are suggested: osteomas extending beyond the boundaries of the frontal sinus, if enlarging, if localized in the region adjacent to the nasofrontal duct, if signs of chronic sinusitis are present, osteomas of the ethmoid sinuses, irrespective of their size and if patients with osteomas complain of headache and other causes of headache have been excluded. The operation of choice is the osteoplastic flap operation.

[Cholesteatoma of the facial sinuses. Apropos of an ethmoid-orbital cholesteatoma].

A case of cholesteatoma of the ethmoid extending to the orbit is reported. These cholesteatomas of facial sinuses are rarely reported, those documented involving localization in maxillary or frontal, or ethmoido-frontal or ethmoido-maxillary sinuses. Primary perisinusal cholesteatomas of embryonic origin must be distinguished from the rarer secondary iatrogenic or post-traumatic lesions. Histopathology allows distinction between epidermoid cysts and cholesterol type granulomas. Treatment is by surgery using a wide approach.

A case of Kartagener's syndrome with combined aplasia of frontal and sphenoid sinuses and hypoplasia of maxillary and ethmoid sinuses.

Kartagener's syndrome (KS), characterized by a triad of bronchiectasis, chronic sinusitis, and situs inversus, is a subset of an autosomal recessive hereditary disorder of primary ciliary dyskinesia. We report the case of a 35-year-old male who presented with a history of intermittent episodes of productive cough, breathlessness, and cold since childhood. High resolution computed tomography of chest revealed bronchiectatic changes, dextrocardia, and right-sided aortic arch. Computed tomography (CT) scan of the abdomen revealed situs inversus. CT of the paranasal sinuses revealed combined aplas
