Hepatozoon canis is a tick-borne protozoan that infects dogs and has been reported throughout the world. Manifestation of H. canis infection varies from being sub-clinical in apparently healthy dogs to severe illness. The main vector of the infection is the dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus although other species may also transmit this agent. H. canis has been reported previously in Brazil, but mostly as an occasional finding during laboratory exams and always associated with other diseases. The prevalence of H. canis in dogs of rural areas of Brazil has been little studied. For this study, 2

Increasing isolation of Cryptosporidium, Cyclospora, and microsporidia from immunocompromised patients with severe diarrhea has prompted study of these organisms. Only recently recognized as human pathogens, they have also been associated with several waterborne outbreaks of diarrhea in immunocompetent individuals. Cryptosporidium and Cyclospora have been shown to be transmitted through fecally contaminated food and water. The mode of transmission for microsporidia is still unclear. While the life cycle and pathogenesis of Cryptosporidium are beginning to be understood, the microsporidia and C

Hepatozoon felis is the most prevalent Hepatozoon species infecting domestic cats worldwide; however, clinical disease is considered uncommon. This study describes the first clinically confirmed case of H. felis infection in a domestic cat from Panama. A 3-year-old male cat presented with painful periostitis of long bones, poor body condition and leukocytosis with marked neutrophilia. Hepatozoon gamonts were detected in neutrophils, and infection was confirmed by PCR and sequencing of the 18S rRNA gene. Phylogenetic analysis revealed a highly divergent H. felis lineage clustering separately fr

Ectoparasitic infestations in reptiles-primarily ticks and mites-can significantly compromise their health and fitness, particularly in captivity conditions. This brief report describes a severe tick infestation and concurrent Haemogregarina spp. infection in an African rock python (Python sebae) at a private zoo in Abeokuta, Nigeria. Initial clinical evaluation revealed heavy infestations of Amblyomma latum ticks, pronounced facial swelling, incomplete shedding, anorexia, lethargy, and the presence of intraerythrocytic Haemogregarina-like gamonts on stained blood smears. Haematological analys

Hepatozoon spp. are common pathogens in dogs and other Carnivora in many parts of the world, especially in the tropics. There is considerable taxonomic debate concerning the Hepatozoon species infecting Carnivora. Morphological descriptions of several Hepatozoon species are inadequate and their validity is questionable. Additionally, different terminology has been used for the description of life cycle stages. Here, we provide a comprehensive review of the Hepatozoon species in the Carnivora, using a uniform terminology. Worldwide prevalence of clinical and subclinical Hepatozoon infections fo

UNLABELLED: Coccidia Cyclospora cavetanesis has been considered a saprophytic or accidental infection without special medical significance until 1984. However, epidemics of diarrhea first in Peru and later in USA. Haiti and Nepal have aroused interest in pathogenic characteristics of this parasite and diseases it causes. The study first deals with biological cycle of parasite development as well as clinical picture and treatment, diagnostics and epidemiology of this parasitic disease.
CLINICAL PICTURE: On average the incubation period was 2-11 days with frequent stools (3 or more times a day)

PURPOSE: This case report describes the diagnosis of Hepatozoon canis in a 3-month-old male mixed-breed puppy with acute symptoms of lethargy, mucous membrane pallor, and severe gastrointestinal symptoms. The symptoms developed after routine vaccination.
METHODS: A thorough clinical history was obtained, followed by a complete physical examination and hematological analysis. Blood smears were prepared, stained with Giemsa, and examined microscopically. Molecular confirmation of infection was performed via polymerase chain reaction (PCR) targeting the 18 S rRNA gene.
RESULTS: Hematological an

Feline hepatozoonosis, due to Hepatozoon felis, has been recently reported in wild cats from Central Europe. At the same time, only two isolated cases were reported in domestic cats, one in Austria, and another in Hungary. In the southern part of Central Europe, Hungary, three cats were presented at two small animal clinics in the course of 1.5 months, their most important clinical findings included anaemia (for all three cats), malignant neoplasia (case #1), chyloabdomen, splenomegaly and hepatic nodules (case #2), and dyspnoea (case #3). Hepatozoon gamonts measuring 12.3 × 6 μm were present

Female and male hosts may maximise their fitness by evolving different strategies to compensate for the costs of parasite infections. The resulting sexual dimorphism might be apparent in differential relationships between parasite load and body condition, potentially reflecting differences in energy allocation to anti-parasitic defences. For example, male lacertids with high body condition may produce many offspring while being intensely parasitised. In contrast, female lacertids may show a different outcome of the trade-offs between body condition and immunity, aiming to better protect themse

BACKGROUND: Hepatozoon fitzsimonsi (Dias, 1953) is a frequently found haemogregarine of southern African tortoises. At the time of this species' reassignment from the genus Haemogregarina to Hepatozoon, developmental stages such as sporocysts and sporozoites were observed in ticks associated with H. fitzsimonsi parasitised and non-parasitised tortoises. It was thus suggested that ticks may act as the potential vectors for this parasite. However, this earlier research was unable to confirm the identity of these sporogonic stages using molecular markers. In a separate study aimed at identifying

BACKGROUND: Hepatozoon spp. are tick-borne parasites causing subclinical to clinical disease in wild and domestic animals. Aim of this study was to determine Hepatozoon prevalence and species distribution among wild mammals and ticks in Europe.
METHODS: Samples of wild mammals and ticks, originating from Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Belgium and the Netherlands, were tested with PCR to amplify a ~ 670-bp fragment of the small subunit ribosomal RNA gene.
RESULTS: Of the 2801 mammal samples that were used for this study, 370 (13.2%) tested positive. Hepatozoon canis was detected in

Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato and Rhipicephalus turanicus are very prevalent in Israel and are known to be vectors of human and animal diseases. The aim of this study was to identify the pathogens found in questing ticks and such parasitizing domestic and wild animals. Ticks were collected from 16 localities in Israel with the flagging technique and by examining dogs, hedgehogs, a badger and a tortoise. Bacterial and protozoal pathogens were analyzed by PCR and sequencing. Overall, 374 R. sanguineus s.l. specimens were collected, out of which 142 by flagging and 132 from six dogs. Ricket

During spring 2018, we captured 101 spur-thighed tortoises, Testudo graeca, from seven localities in central Morocco. All tortoises were examined for the presence of blood parasites Hemolivia mauritanica and Hyalomma aegyptium ticks, the known vectors. We looked for H. mauritanica infection by examination of blood smears and by genetic analysis with PCR using extractions from both tortoises and ticks. On all tortoises collected, 71.29% were infested with at least one tick, with a mean infestation intensity of 7.12 ticks/tortoise and maximum of 15.55 ticks/tortoises in Had Draa locality (Essaou

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and distribution of canine babesiosis and hepatozoonosis in the south of Romania as well as to assess if there are differences in the prevalence between regions in that area.
METHODS: Blood samples from 300 dogs from the south of Romania were screened for the presence of piroplasmids by PCR. Positive samples were further tested for the presence of Babesia spp. and Hepatozoon canis. Pearson's chi-square with Yates correction was used to determine if there is statistical difference between infected populations.
RESULTS: Fifty-four p

Postmortem examinations of 49 red squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris) found dead on the Isle of Wight revealed the presence of a Hepatozoon species in 18 of them (37 per cent). The prevalence of infection was highest in subadult animals and no juveniles were infected. The prevalence was higher in the squirrels dying from natural causes (nine of 12) than in squirrels killed in road accidents (seven of 27). The weight of infection varied, and there were heavy infections in squirrels dying from toxoplasmosis and bacterial pneumonia. A PCR-based assay was used to identify the presence of Hepatozoon speci

Efforts to expand the scope of surveillance and diagnostic testing for emerging infectious diseases also may increase the potential for identifying pseudo-outbreaks (i.e., increases in incidence that may result from enhanced surveillance) and outbreaks of pseudo-infection (i.e., clusters of false-positives for infection). This report describes the investigations of outbreaks of pseudo-infection with Cyclospora in Florida and Cryptosporidium in New York City in 1995 after health departments in those jurisdictions had initiated surveillance for these emerging organisms. These investigations emph
