How to diagnose hantavirus infections and detect them in rodents and insectivores.

Hantaviruses are carried by rodents and insectivores in which they cause persistent and generally asymptomatic infections. Several hantaviruses can infect humans and many of them cause either haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) in Eurasia or hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS) in the Americas. In humans hantavirus infections are diagnosed using IgM-capture tests but also by RT-PCR detection of viral RNA. For detection of hantavirus infections in rodents and insectivores, serology followed by immunoblotting of, for example, lung tissue, and RT-PCR detection of viral RNA may be

Gene expression reveals the pancreas of Aselli as a critical organ for plasma cell differentiation in the Eurasian common shrew.

BACKGROUND: Almost all mammals rely on the thymus and bone marrow to generate and differentiate B and T cells essential for adaptive immunity. A few members of the family Soricidae, or true shrews within Eulipotyphla, have also evolved an enlarged pancreas of Aselli, a kidney-sized organ hypothesized to serve this primary immune role, and whose gene expression profile is unknown. RESULTS: Here we introduce transcriptomes of juvenile Eurasian common shrews (Sorex araneus, family Soricidae) pancreas of Aselli. We compare these to those of the shrew spleen and chick bursa of Fabricius, an analog

Host-dependent morphology of Isthmiophora melis (Schrank, 1788) Luhe, 1909 (Digenea, Echinostomatinae)--morphological variation vs. molecular stability.

BACKGROUND: Echinostomes are cosmopolitan digenean parasites which infect many different warm-blooded hosts. Their classification is extremely confused; the host spectrum is wide, and morphological similarities often result in misidentification. During our long-term studies on the helminth fauna of rodents and carnivores we have collected 27 collar-spined echinostomes which differ in morphology to an extent that suggests the presence of more than one species. Here, we describe this material, and the extent of host-related variation in this parasite. METHODS: Specimens of Isthmiophora isolated

Pneumocystis carinii in wildlife.

Pneumocystis carinii is a eukaryotic organism capable of causing life-threatening pneumonia (PCP) in immunocompromised hosts. Despite intensive investigation in human and laboratory animal hosts, information on the occurrence and nature of infections in wild animals is scarce, although characterisation of infections in wild-animal populations may help to elucidate the life-cycle and transmission of this elusive organism. Due to the interspecific differences in prevalence and intensity of P. carinii infection, and to the antigenic and genetic diversity of P. carinii organisms originating from v

Allometry of the limb long bones of insectivores and rodents.

In an attempt to investigate the relationships between allometry and locomotory adaptations, we studied the long limb bones of 45 species of insectivores and rodents. Animals ranged from a few grams to about 50 kilograms. Diameter and length of the bones and body mass (when known) were recorded. Regressions of diameter to length, diameter to body mass, and length to body mass were calculated by the least-squares and Model II, or major axis, methods. The results obtained do not agree with the predictions of either the theory of geometric similarity or the theory of elastic similarity. The discr

Histology of the chorioallantoic placenta of the golden-rumped elephant shrew (Rhynchocyon chrysopygus Gunther, 1881).

The chorioallantoic placenta of the golden-rumped elephant shrew, Rhynchocyon chrysopygus has been studied. The implantation is eccentric and mesometrial. The placenta is haemochorial and is divisible into 4 zones namely columnar, proliferative, spongy and basal trophoblastic zones. The proliferative zone, which is peculiar to the Macroscelididae, is present in the early and mid pregnancy but disappears in later stages. The presence of the basal trophoblastic zone, the absence of a true zone of degeneration, the absence of the "mesoplacentarium" (of Starck 1949) and the structure of the wall o

Natural foci of leptospirosis on the territory of the north-eastern part of the east mountain range of Azerbaijan and their characteristic.

Numerous natural foci of leptospirosis infection in which Ap. sylvaticus and M. musculus play the role of the main source, were found on the territory of the north-eastern part of Azerbaijan's east mountain range. The leading place in the aetiological structure of leptospirosis of small mammals is occupied by leptospirae of the serological group Hebdomadis. As a rule, the animals -- Leptospira-carriers -- populate damp biotopes where stable natural foci of disease are formed. Two types of natural foci were established on the given territory, i. e., the marshy-bush type and the mountain-stream

The occurrence of babesiasis affecting small terrestrial mammals and the importance of this zoonosis in Europe.

A short survey is given of the occurrence of babesiasis affecting small terrestrial mammals in some parts of Europe. Results obtained in studies of 7,038 small terrestrial mammals (42 species) from Czechoslovakia, Austria, Hungary, Yugoslavia and Bulgaria, show the distribution of Babesia microti in these countries. The authors found babesias in the following host species: Neomys anomalus, Clethrionomys glareolus. Microtus arvalis, M. agrestis, Apodemus agratius, A. flavicollis, A. sylvaticus and Mus musculus. The average incidence was very low-0.2% and varied in individual countries from nega

Ultrastructure and cytochemistry of intrauterine embryonic and larval stages of Ityogonimus lorum (Digenea: Brachylaimidae) involving transitory development of ciliated miracidia.

Results of the present study provide ultrastructural evidence that miracidial morphogenesis is fully completed within the intrauterine eggs while in the most posterior uterine regions of Ityogonimus lorum, a digenean parasite of an Iberian mole, Talpa occidentalis (Eulipotyphla, Talpidae). Using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the ultrastructural characteristics of diverse cell types and their organelles of these developing embryos and fully formed miracidia within the eggshell were examined. The eggshell and embryonic envelopes are similar to those described previously by many authors

Influence of feeding habits in the endocrine pancreas of insectivore bat Pteronotus personatus and nectarivore bat Anoura geoffroyi: A comparative stereological and immunohistochemical study.

Pteronotus personatus as an insectivore bat and has a diet that consists of a high protein diet, whereas the diet of Anoura geoffroyi, a predominantly nectarivore bat, is rich in simple sugars like sucrose, glucose and fructose. Considering that diet influences the activation of different pathways, which may influence morphological adaptations in the gastrointestinal system, the aim of this study was to compare the morphology of the endocrine pancreas in P. personatus and A. geoffroyi. For this, histological, stereological and immunohistochemical methods were used. In P. personatus, the averag

The relationship between the tick-borne encephalitis virus and the ticks and mammals of the Tribec mountain range.

The basic problem in the study of tick-borne virus diseases is to establish where the virus is maintained in nature. In general, this focus will be found where there are large and relatively stable populations of ticks, small rodents and insectivores. In the Tribec region the principal vector of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is Ixodes ricinus, although other species can circulate the virus under suitable conditions. The virus can persist during winter either in starving nymphs or adults or in non-starving larvae or nymphs. It can also persist in hibernating mammals, but this is a less importan

First evidence of poisonous shrews with an envenomation apparatus.

Herein, we report evidence of an envenomation apparatus (EA) in two different species of extinct "giant" shrews, Beremendia and an indeterminate soricine (Mammalia, Eulipotyphla, Soricidae), documented by very well preserved fossil specimens recovered from two Early Pleistocene cave deposits of the Sierra de Atapuerca in Burgos, Spain. The two soricine taxa from Atapuerca have evolved specialized teeth as EAs, which differ from those of recently reported mammals of the Paleocene age, being more similar to the ones described in the modern Solenodon. This discovery reveals the first instance of
