The consumption of polyphenol-rich foods is associated with a decreased risk of mortality from cardiovascular diseases. Previously, we have demonstrated that the stone of Euterpe oleracea Mart. (açaí) from the Amazon region exerts vasodilator and antioxidant actions. This study examined the effect of açaí stone extract (ASE) on the vascular functional and structural changes and oxidative stress associated with the two-kidney, one-clip (2K-1C) renovascular hypertension. 2K-1C and sham-operated rats were treated with ASE 200 mg/kg/day (or vehicle) for 40 days. Blood pressure was measured by tail

Many studies suggest a protective role of phenolic compounds in mood disorders. We aimed to assess the effect of Euterpe oleracea (açaí) seed extract (ASE) on anxiety induced by periodic maternal separation (PMS) in adult male rats. Animals were divided into 6 groups: control, ASE, fluoxetine (FLU), PMS, PMS+ASE, and PMS+FLU. For PMS, pups were separated daily from the dam for 3 h between postnatal day (PN) 2 and PN21. ASE (200 mg·kg-1·day-1) and FLU (10 mg·kg-1·day-1) were administered by gavage for 34 days after stress induction, starting at PN76. At PN106 and PN108, the rats were submitted

BACKGROUND: This study was designed to evaluate the cardioprotective effects of Euterpe oleracea Mart., popularly known as "açaí", on rats subjected to myocardial infarction (MI).
METHODS: Hydroalcoholic extracts of açaí were obtained from a decoction of the seeds. Two male Wistar rat groups were delineated: 1) the sham-operated group (control, n = 6), with no surgical amendment, and 2) the MI group (n = 12), in which the anterior descendent coronary artery was occluded during surgery. MI group was divided into two subgroups, in which rats were either treated with hydroalcoholic extract of Eu

Brazil's production and consumption of açai pulp (Euterpe oleracea) occur on a large scale. Most of the fruit is formed by the pit, which generates countless tons of residual biomass. A new purpose for this biomass, making its consumption highly sustainable, was presented in this study, where activated carbon (AC) was produced with zinc chloride for later use as an adsorbent. AC carbon formed by carbon and with a yield of 28 % was satisfactorily used as an adsorbent in removing the herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D). Removal efficiency was due to the highly porous surface (Vp = 0

Many antimicrobial compounds have been seeking to protect the human body against pathogenic microbial infections. In recent times, there has been considerable growth of pathogens resistant to existing drugs due to the inappropriate use of antibiotics. In the present study, bacteria isolated from the honey of stingless bees native to the Amazon called Scaptotrigona aff. postica and Apis mellifera were used to determine their potential antimicrobial properties and characterize the medium cultivated with isolated bacteria. The results showed inhibition of nine isolates. Among these isolates, SCA1

The antioxidant capacity and modulation of oxidative stress by industrially processed açaí pulp extract from the Amazon (APEA) and its major anthocyanins, cyanidin 3-glucoside (C3G) and cyanidin-3-O-rutinoside (C3R), were evaluated as potential strategies for preventing cardiovascular diseases. The APEA was chemically characterized using ultrafast liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UFLC-MS), which revealed six main phenolic compounds. Notably, 9-(2,3-dihydroxypropoxy)-9-oxononanoic acid, acanthoside B, roseoside, cinchonine, and nonanedioate were identified for the first time in açaí ext

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is the most prevalent chronic liver disease, characterized by hepatic steatosis, mitochondrial dysfunction, and oxidative stress. Food-derived polyphenols are promising ingredients that modulate cellular metabolism and redox balance. Açaí (Euterpe oleracea Mart.) seed, a polyphenol-rich agro-industrial by-product, has shown hepatoprotective potential; however, no previous study has comprehensively evaluated its effects on key mitochondrial functions in experimental MASLD. Therefore, this study investigated whether açaí seed extra

Methylmercury (MeHg) exposure is a serious problem of public health, especially in the Amazon. Exposure in riverine populations is responsible for neurobehavioral abnormalities. It was hypothesized that consumption of Amazonian fruits could protect by reducing mercury accumulation. This work analyzed the effects of commercial samples of Euterpe oleracea (EO) for human consumption (10 μL/g) against MeHg i.p. exposure (2.5 mg/Kg), using neurobehavioral (open field, rotarod and pole tests), biochemical (lipid peroxidation and nitrite levels), aging-related (telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT)

This study investigated the effects of lyophilized ethanolic açaí (Euterpe oleracea Mart.) fruit extract (AFE) as a growth promoter on growth performance and the carcass, gastrointestinal tract, meat quality, and serological properties of broiler chickens. In total, 576 mixed-sex Ross 308 broilers were randomly assigned to four treatments with six replications of 24 birds. A control group received an additive-free diet (AFE0), while test groups received basal diets supplemented with 2.5 g (AFE2.5), 5 g (AFE5), or 10 g (AFE10) of AFE per kg. Up to 42 days of age, the AFE2.5 and AFE5 diets incre

Maternal consumption of trans fatty acids (TFA) during pregnancy and lactation is associated with adverse metabolic and hypothalamic cytokine-related alterations in offspring. Anthocyanin-rich fruits such as Jussara (Euterpe edulis Mart.) may counteract these effects through their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential. Pregnant Wistar rats (n = 24) were assigned to four diets during pregnancy and lactation: control (C), control +0.5% Jussara (CJ), trans fat-enriched (T), or trans fat + Jussara (TJ). Litters were standardized to eight pups, and only male offspring were analyzed at weaning

Myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury (MIRI) is the principal cause of death and occurs after prolonged blockage of the coronary arteries. Diabetes represents one of the main factors aggravating myocardial injury. Restoring blood flow is the first intervention against a heart attack, although reperfusion process could cause additional damage, such as the overproduction of reacting oxygen species (ROS). In recent years, açaí berry has gained international attention as a functional food due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties; not only that but this fruit has shown glucose-lower

BACKGROUND: Pediatric contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) require sustained cooperation, procedural immobility, and venous access, creating operational and experiential challenges for children, families, and imaging services. Existing nonpharmacological interventions generally address isolated procedural segments and do not preserve a familiar context across home, hospital, and scanner transitions.
INNOVATION: Euterpe-Radiology (Euterpe-RAD) is a consent-gated, five-module institutional pathway that sustains one autobiographically anchored multisens

Chagas disease is an infection caused by Trypanosoma cruzi, a parasite endemic in Latin America. Acute involvement of the CNS by Chagas has been considered rare, but presumed reactivation of chronic disease in immunosuppressed patients has been the subject of recent reports. Our objective is to describe the clinical and imaging characteristics of four patients with Chagas disease and CNS involvement, and the patients had to have available MRI and a diagnosis confirmed by biopsy. The imaging findings were similar, highlighting the presence of focal cerebral lesions with hypointensity on T2-WI,

The COVID-19 pandemic had a great impact on the mortality of older adults and, chronic non- transmissible diseases (CNTDs) patients, likely previous inflammaging condition that is common in these subjects. It is possible that functional foods could attenuate viral infection conditions such as SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2), the causal agent of COVID-19 pandemic. Previous evidence suggested that some fruits consumed by Amazonian Diet from Pre-Colombian times could present relevant proprieties to decrease of COVID-19 complications such as oxidative-cytokine storm.
