Adaptation of the System for Observing Play and Recreation in Communities (SOPARC) for the Measurement of Physical Activity in Jail Settings.

Over 9 million people are incarcerated in jail each year, but physical activity has not been assessed among incarcerated populations. Measuring physical activity in the jail setting is complicated as current physical activity measurement tools are not designed for use inside jail facilities. Therefore, we adapted an evidence-based physical activity measurement tool, the System for Observing Play and Recreation in Communities (SOPARC), to assess physical activity within a jail facility. SOPARC was designed to obtain observational information on physical activity of individuals. The study team c

Tackling a global threat: a clinical scenario-based framework for preventing and managing Candidozyma auris infections.

Candidozyma auris (formerly Candida auris) has emerged as a formidable global health threat, characterized by its multidrug resistance (MDR), high transmissibility in healthcare settings, and significant mortality. The World Health Organization classifies it as a 'critical priority' fungal pathogen. Conventional infection control paradigms, often applying a 'one-size-fits-all' approach, have struggled to contain C. auris due to its unique environmental resilience and transmission dynamics. This review departs from traditional linear analyses and proposes a novel, scenario-based framework to de

Efficacy of an Exercise and Nutritional Supplement Program on Physical Performance and Nutritional Status in Older Adults With Mobility Limitations Residing at Senior Living Facilities.

This cluster-randomized trial was designed to determine the efficacy of a 6-month exercise-nutritional supplement program (ENP) on physical function and nutritional status for older adults and the feasibility of implementing this program in a senior living setting. Twenty senior-living facilities were randomized to either a 3 day per week group-based ENP led by a trained facility staff member or a health education program (SAP). Participants (N = 121) completed a short physical performance battery, 400-m walk, handgrip strength test, and mini-nutrition assessment. 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D]

A cluster randomized controlled trial to assess the impact of the 'Caring for Providers to Improve Patient Experience' (CPIPE) intervention in Kenya and Ghana: study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Poor person-centered maternal care (PCMC) contributes to high maternal mortality and morbidity, directly and indirectly, through lack of, delayed, inadequate, unnecessary, or harmful care. While evidence on poor PCMC prevalence, as well as inequities, expanded in the last decade, there is still a significant gap in evidence-based interventions to address PCMC. We describe the protocol for a trial to test the effectiveness of the "Caring for Providers to Improve Patient Experience" (CPIPE) intervention, which includes five strategies, targeting provider stress and bias as intermedia

The social dimensions of community delivery of intermittent preventive treatment of malaria in pregnancy in Madagascar, Mozambique, Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

INTRODUCTION: Intermittent preventive treatment in pregnancy with sulphadoxine pyrimethamine (IPTp) is a key malaria prevention strategy in sub-Saharan African countries. We conducted an anthropological study as part of a project aiming to evaluate a community-based approach to the delivery of IPTp (C-IPTp) through community health workers (CHWs) in four countries (the Democratic Republic of Congo, Madagascar, Mozambique and Nigeria), to understand the social context in order to identify key factors that could influence C-IPTp acceptability. METHODS: A total of 796 in-depth interviews and 265

Radiation Dose Reduction in Kidney Stone CT: A Randomized, Facility-Based Intervention.

OBJECTIVE: Kidney stones are common, tend to recur, and afflict a young population. Despite evidence and recommendations, adoption of reduced-radiation dose CT (RDCT) for kidney stone CT (KSCT) is slow. We sought to design and test an intervention to improve adoption of RDCT protocols for KSCT using a randomized facility-based intervention. METHODS: Facilities contributing at least 40 KSCTs to the American College of Radiology dose index registry (DIR) during calendar year 2015 were randomized to intervention or control groups. The Dose Optimization for Stone Evaluation intervention included

Challenges, Lessons Learned, and Implications for Conducting Nutrition/Health Research in Canadian Federal Correctional Facilities.

While conducting nutrition/health research into weight changes during incarceration and related determinants, it became apparent that the correctional setting in Canada was unique and required study design modifications to ensure study success. Consequently, we made many methodological adjustments during recruitment and data collection because of unforeseen challenges in the correctional context. This paper provides an illustrative example and shares insights on the challenges faced when conducting nutrition/health research in Canadian correctional facilities. Guidance on how to adapt research

Facility readiness and determinants of malaria test-before-treat implementation in public health facilities in Kaduna and Kano States, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Prompt diagnosis and treatment of malaria remain central to malaria control strategies. The World Health Organization recommends testing suspected malaria cases before treatment using rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) or microscopy. However, evidence on the readiness of health facilities to implement this policy in high-burden Nigerian states remains limited. This study assessed facility readiness, testing-before-treatment (TBT) coverage, and facility-level determinants of malaria diagnostic readiness among public health facilities in Kaduna and Kano States, Nigeria. METHODS: A cross-

A Scoping Review of Sexual and Reproductive Health Interventions With Youth in U.S. Juvenile Facilities.

Youth placed in U.S. juvenile detention facilities face multilevel barriers that contribute to disparate sexual and reproductive health (SRH) outcomes when compared to their peers in the general adolescent population. Minimal information is available about evidence-based interventions that have been effective in changing these outcomes. The aim of this scoping review was to focus on the current state of SRH and identify recommendations for SRH care. Using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses for scoping reviews guidelines, we searched electronic databases for

Adolescent abortion care trajectories and safety in Ethiopia, Malawi, and Zambia: A comparative mixed methods study.

Lack of access to safe abortions continues to be a major sexual and reproductive health concern. Adolescents can face barriers to safe abortions due to the unique implications of their age. Understanding adolescent abortion experiences and care trajectories is critical. Qualitative and quantitative evidence is analysed from interviews with 313 adolescents aged 10-19 years who sought abortion-related care in public health facilities in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), Lilongwe (Malawi), and Lusaka (Zambia) between April 2018 and September 2019. The trajectories framework is used to understand how adoles

Are Case Volume and Facility Complexity Level Associated With Postoperative Complications After Hip Fracture Surgery in the Veterans Affairs Healthcare System?

BACKGROUND: Hospital-related factors associated with mortality and morbidity after hip fracture surgery are not completely understood. The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) is the largest single-payer, networked healthcare system in the country serving a relatively homogenous patient population with facilities that vary in size and resource availability. These characteristics provide some degree of financial and patient-level controls to explore the association, if any, between surgical volume and facility resource availability and hospital performance regarding postoperative complications
