Prognostic value of brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) and middle latency auditory evoked potentials (MLAEPs) in unconscious patients after cardiac arrest.

AIMS: Assessing neurological outcome after cardiac arrest (CA) remains challenging. We aim to evaluate the prognostic value of brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) and middle latency auditory evoked potentials (MLAEP) in patients with disorders of consciousness (DoC) after CA and indeterminate outcome according to current recommendations (i.e., no highly malignant EEG and bilateral absence of N20). METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted using data collected prospectively from two intensive care units. The prognostic value of the absence of wave V, an abnormal conduction laten

Cochlear potentials and auditory evoked potentials in the caiman (Caiman crocodilus (L.)).

Brain-stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) and round window compound action potentials (CAPs) in response to rarefaction and condensation clicks were recorded from anaesthetized and artificially respired caiman. The recorded wave forms were substantially different from the brain-stem and round window potentials recorded in mammals, including man. In particular, wave latencies were much longer than in mammals. Wave amplitudes increased and latencies decreased significantly and reversibly with increases in stimulus intensity and body temperature. The latencies of the first positive wave (P1)

Electroacupuncture Promotes Neuroplasticity of Central Auditory Pathway: An Auditory Evoked Potentials Study.

Our previous studies found that electroacupuncture at the right Zhongzhu acupoint (TE3) can enhance auditory recovery in rats with noise-induced hearing loss. Here, we investigated the changes in auditory brainstem response (ABR) and long late latency (LLR) evoked potential to explain the mechanisms of electroacupuncture at TE3. The auditory evoked potentials were recorded, including ABR and LLR, at baseline and on day 3 (D3), D5, and D8 after baseline. The 2-Hz electroacupuncture at the right TE3 was applied on D3, D4, and D5 in the electroacupuncture group but not in the control group. In AB

The auditory pathology of brain death as revealed by auditory evoked potentials.

A case of brain death is reported in which the auditory brainstem response, middle latency component, and slow vertex response were recorded before and after the cessation of cortical activity, and in which histological examination of the temporal bone and central auditory pathways was performed post mortem. Brain death of at least 48 hours' duration was demonstrated by neurological examination, flat electroencephalographic recording, and persistent absence of auditory evoked responses. The postmortem examination was performed 3 hours after death. The pathological studies of the whole length o

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials and somatosensory evoked potentials in pontine haemorrhage. Correlations with clinical and CT findings.

Electrophysiological studies were performed on 17 patients with pontine haemorrhage. Most had had massive hypertensive bleeding, leading to death in 12 of them within 3 months. Of the 5 surviving patients, 2 had a poor outcome and 3 a moderately good outcome. Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) and somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) were recorded in all patients, mostly with serial recordings. BAEPs were pathological in all patients. The most important finding was a reduction in amplitude or loss of waves. With a loss of waves after wave II bilaterally all patients died; the 2 pat

Meta-Analyses of Auditory Evoked Potentials as Alzheimer Biomarkers.

OBJECTIVES: Alterations in auditory evoked potential (AEP) parameters have been associated with sensory memory deficits and may serve as biomarkers for cognitive decline. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of AEPs in the early detection of Alzheimer disease (AD). DESIGN: The systematic review was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses 2020 guidelines. A comprehensive search was performed across five electronic databases (EMBASE, Scopus, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, PubMed, and CINAHL) from their

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials with speech stimulus in neonates.

INTRODUCTION: Brainstem auditory evoked potentials in response to complex sounds, such as speech sounds, investigate the neural representation of these sounds at subcortical levels, and faithfully reflect the stimulus characteristics. However, there are few studies that utilize this type of stimulus; for it to be used in clinical practice it is necessary to establish standards of normality through studies performed in different populations. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the latencies and amplitudes of the waves obtained from the tracings of brainstem auditory evoked potentials using speech stimuli in

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials in children with lead exposure.

INTRODUCTION: Earlier studies have demonstrated an auditory effect of lead exposure in children, but information on the effects of low chronic exposures needs to be further elucidated. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of low chronic exposures of the auditory system in children with a history of low blood lead levels, using an auditory electrophysiological test. METHODS: Contemporary cross-sectional cohort. Study participants underwent tympanometry, pure tone and speech audiometry, transient evoked otoacoustic emissions, and brainstem auditory evoked potentials, with blood lead monitoring

[Early auditory evoked potentials in very small premature infants].

BACKGROUND: Brainstem auditory evoked response (BAER) is a sensitive test of the functional integrity of the auditory pathway. Latencies and amplitudes of measured waveforms reflect maturation of this brainstem pathway and may allow a prediction for neurological outcome. PATIENTS AND METHODS: BAER were measured prospectively in preterm infants with a birthweight less than 1500 g at 3 to 4 day following birth and during treatment on neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) every two weeks. Pre- and postnatal risk factors and frequency of apnea were evaluated. Outcome was scored after 1 year correct

Auditory brain stem evoked potentials in patients with leprosy.

Nineteen, randomly selected male patients with lepromatous leprosy were evaluated electrophysiologically. All of these patients had long-standing disease and were treated with dapsone alone. There were statistically significant differences between the values obtained in this group of leprosy patients compared to 20 age-matched controls in auditory brain stem evoked potentials (ABEP). The findings are consistent with a pathologic process located mainly between the cochlear nucleus and the lateral lemniscus in the auditory brain stem pathways. It should be emphasized that our patients had long-s

Brain-stem auditory evoked potentials in supratentorial brain tumors.

A group of 42 adult patients with supratentorial brain tumors were studied with computed tomography (CT or/and NMR) and brain-stem evoked potentials (BAEPs). 12 patients had meningiomas and 30 had malignant tumors (gliomas and metastases). The latencies of wave V and of the interpeak latency I-III, III-V and I-V were evaluated both on the lesion side and the opposite side. In meningiomas mean latencies did not show significant differences from normal, while mean latencies in malignant tumors were significantly prolonged, except for the I-III interpeak latency. The results of this study demonst

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials in patients with mitochondrial encephalomyopathy.

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) were evaluated in three patients with mitochondrial encephalomyopathy belonging to the same family. This study showed marked alterations of BAEPs in all patients: reduction of wave amplitude, poor repeatability of responses in test-retest and abnormalities in wave form and latency. The neuroradiological examinations (CT-scan, MRI) did not show significant structural brain abnormalities. Abnormal BAEPs in our patients may be related to central metabolic disorder rather than hearing loss.

Auditory evoked potentials in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (TS) has been increasingly studied neurophysiologically as well as clinically. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and attention deficit disorder (ADD) have been recognized to be part of the continuum of TS. We recorded brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) and long-latency auditory event-related potentials (ERPs) in 20 patients with TS, 10 of whom had ADD and 6 OCD. TS patients with and without OCD and ADD did not differ in BAEP latencies, and no differences were found from normal controls. AEP latencies did not differ between TS patients and controls. TS

[Changes in early auditory evoked potentials in acoustic neuroma].

The auditory brain-stem responses (ABRs) of 38 patients with acoustic neuroma (AN) were recorded pre-operatively and evaluated with regard to pathological deviations from the normal. Several qualitative and quantitative features of the ABRs were compared statistically with the results obtained from a control group for age and sex, and considering patients with various cochlear pathologies (Meniere's disease, sudden deafness, presbycusis). Retrocochlear disorders were ruled out by computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging. Statistical analysis yielded the following results. The central

[Auditory evoked potentials in Fisher's syndrome. A clinical case].

A 15 year old patient developed ataxia 2 weeks after an upper respiratory infection. Absent reflexes, external ophthalmoplegia, bilateral ptosis, isochoric mydriasis and week photomotor reflexes (Bell's phenomenon) were noted. A slight increase in protein but not cell content of the CSF was observed. Miller-Fisher syndrome was diagnosed on clinical grounds and visual and auditory evoked potentials were explored and found to be normal. This is in complete agreement to the literature and indicates indemnity of the central nervous system in Miller-Fisher's syndrome. Peripheral nervous system abno

Prognostic value of brainstem auditory evoked potentials in neonates.

The clinical outcome in 74 children at risk for audiologic or neurologic sequelae of a variety of perinatal insults was correlated with brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) in the newborn period. No constant relationship was found between BAEP findings and later hearing status in preterm infants or in infants with severe brain damage. However, persistent patterns of wave I abnormality correctly predicted the presence and type of hearing loss in other infants. Central BAEP abnormalities recorded in preterm infants or in infants who had just suffered anoxia had little predictive value. T

Auditory input to the pedunculopontine nucleus: I. Evoked potentials.

The pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN) has been implicated in sleep-wake control, arousal responses, and motor functions. The PPN also has been implicated in the generation of the P1 middle-latency auditory-evoked potential. The present study was undertaken to determine the topographical distribution, threshold, and response properties of depth-recorded potentials following auditory click stimulation. Experiments were conducted in both decerebrate cat and rat, with a view towards determining the presence of P1-like middle-latency auditory-evoked potentials in the midbrain of both species. These re

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials during procaine toxicity in dogs.

Although the toxic effect of local anaesthetics on the activity of cerebral cortex has been extensively studied, little is known about their toxic effect on brainstem. Accordingly, the influence of procaine on brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) and on the electroencephalogram (EEG) was observed in 15 dogs. After the administration of procaine (15 mg.kg-1, i.v.), the amplitudes of wave I (1.88 +/- 0.56 vs 2.06 +/- 0.61 microV, mean +/- SD) and wave II (1.91 +/- 0.41 vs 2.06 +/- 0.46 microV) in BAEPs increased (P less than 0.05), while the amplitudes of wave III (0.97 +/- 0.27 vs 0.81

Brain stem auditory evoked potentials: applications in clinical audiology.

The brain stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) or, more appropriately, the auditory brain stem response (ABR) is a series of 5-7, vertex-positive, time-locked electric events. They are usually aroused by a brief, rapid onset, high intensity acoustic click or tonal pip. The vertex positive nature of the events is dictated by the placement of surface electrodes, usually featuring an active electrode on the vertex, a referent electrode on the mastoid or earlobe ipsilateral to the signal source, and a ground electrode on the forehead or other neutral tissue. The size of the ABR is sufficiently s
