[Diagnosis of sensorineural hearing loss by ipsilateral masking of brain stem auditory evoked potentials].

The Authors show their original technique for the differential diagnosis of cochlear and retrocochlear hearing loss which employs ipsilateral masking of the A.B.R. in order to define the difference in V wave latency between a standard technique (clicks at 21 pps without noise) and a sensitized technique (clicks at 21 pps with noise at S/N of +40). This difference in latency has been named Sensitizing Latency Difference (SLD). Sixty normal subjects, 85 patients with cochlear hearing loss and 6 with retrocochlear hearing loss, were studied. The obtained data showed a SLD value: in normal hearing

Unusual pattern of somatosensory and brain-stem auditory evoked potentials after cardio-respiratory arrest.

Two patients in coma after cardio-pulmonary arrest showed bilateral absence of all brain-stem auditory evoked potentials contrasting with normal brain-stem reflexes and normal somatosensory cortical evoked potentials. In both patients pre-existing dysfunction of peripheral auditory structures could be ruled out. Subsequent neuropathological analysis showed that the anoxic-ischaemic lesions were restricted to Sommer's sector and the Purkinje cells. These unusual data suggest the hypothesis that a severe hypoxic-ischaemic insult may impair cochlear function and interfere with the activation of t

Brain-stem auditory evoked potential monitoring in experimental diffuse brain injury.

The time course of brain-stem auditory evoked potential (BAEP) changes was investigated using an impact-acceleration trauma model in 23 spontaneously breathing rats. Intracranial pressure (ICP), arterial blood pressure and respiratory rate were monitored. The experiments were terminated at four hours after trauma. No significant changes in intracranial pressure (ICP) occurred following the impact. After a short increase, blood pressure returned to baseline values within 5 min. Transient apnea was not followed by prolonged respiratory depression. Diffuse closed head injury (CHI) did not result

Abnormal brain stem auditory evoked potentials in a girl with the central alveolar hypoventilation syndrome.

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials were recorded in a 3-year-old girl with the central alveolar hypoventilation syndrome (Ondine's syndrome). Abnormal findings were seen at the level of the mid to upper brain stem (wave III), which was not reproducibly recordable on the left side. This electrophysiologic abnormality is consistent with a previous finding in a patient with sleep apnea.

Auditory nerve-brain stem evoked potentials in cats during manipulation of the cerebral perfusion pressure.

In order to study the effects of various degrees of cerebral ischemia on the auditory nerve-brain stem evoked potentials (BAEP), the cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP), defined as the difference between mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) and intracranial pressure (ICP), was systemically manipulated in anesthetized, paralyzed and ventilated cats. The CPP was varied by decreasing MAP, either by hemorrhage or by the infusion of a vasodilating drug, and elevating ICP by infusion of mock CSF into the cisterna magna, or by MAP depression and ICP elevation simultaneously. Even though the lower limit o

Auditory brain stem response and cortical evoked potentials in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus.

CONCLUSIONS: Delay in ABR and CAEPs wave latencies in children with type 1DM indicates that there is abnormality in the neural conduction in DM patients. The duration of DM has greater effect on auditory function than the control of DM. BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a common endocrine and metabolic disorder. Evoked potentials offer the possibility to perform a functional evaluation of neural pathways in the central nervous system. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effect of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) on auditory brain stem response (ABR) and cortical evoked potentials (CAEPs). MET

[Brain stem auditory and visual evoked potentials in children and adolescents with Guillain-Barré syndrome].

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is the most common acquired polyradiculoneuropathy in childhood. It has been conventionally regarded as a disease exclusively of the peripheral nervous system. The involvement of the central nervous system (CNS) in patients with GBS has been rarely described. The purpose of the study was to delineate the extent of subclinical neurological changes of CNS in children and adolescents with this syndrome. Thirty patients aged 8-18 years with GBS were treated in the Chair and Department of Developmental Neurology. The upper and lower limbs paresis dominated in clinical

Retrolabyrinthine vestibular neurectomy with simultaneous monitoring of eighth nerve and brain stem auditory evoked potentials.

We have used retrolabyrinthine vestibular neurectomy in 36 of 49 cases as the primary surgical procedure to relieve vertigo. Most of the patients (46 of 49) had Meniere's disease. Results indicate that 71% (35 of 49) of the patients had no vertigo after the operation, while 22% (11 of 49) had much improvement. Hearing was maintained within 20 dB of the preoperative level in 78% (38 of 49) of the patients. During surgery in the last 23 patients, direct nerve potentials were recorded from the middle ear promontory and the intracranial cochlear nerve. Brain stem auditory evoked responses were sim

[The auditory evoked brain stem potential andits value for clinical diagnosis].

Auditory evoked brain stem potentials (seven waves within the first 10 milliseconds after the stimulus) obtained from the intercalated nuclei within the auditory pathway by averaging are suitable for a functional diagnosis of the brain stem. Disorders affecting the auditory pathway (direct or indirect tumour pressure or infiltrates, demyelinisation processes, traumatic brain stem injuries, ischemia) from the acoustic nerve through the cochlear nuclei, the superior olivary nuclei, the nuclei of the lateral lemnisci, the inferior collicular nuclei, to the medial geniculate bodies can be identifi

Characteristics of brain stem auditory evoked potentials in children with hearing impairment due to infectious diseases.

Among objective audiologic tests, the most important were tests of brain stem auditory evoked potentials. The objective of the study was to test the configuration, degree of hearing loss, and response characteristics of auditory brain stem evoked potentials in children with hearing loss occurred due to infectious disease. A case control study design was used. The study group consisted of 54 patients referred for a hearing test because of infectious diseases caused by other agents or that occurred as congenital infection. Infectious agents have led to the emergence of various forms of sensorine

[Auditory brain stem potentials evoked by electrical stimulation of cochlear nuclei during central auditive implant setting].

INTRODUCTION: The implantation of a stimulator over the surface of the cochlear nuclei can provide a partial auditive capability to patients deaf due to a bilateral lesion of the 8th nerve. Intraoperative monitoring of short latency electrically-evoked potentials is useful to asses the correct positioning of the implant, specially when there are anatomical distortions. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Evoked potentials from two patients with type II neurofibromatosis were recorded during implantation surgery, using a blanker system to eliminate the stimulus artifact. RESULTS: In both cases, two-peak ve

Vector analysis of brain-stem auditory evoked potentials in patients with multiple sclerosis and subtentorial tumors.

Vector analysis of BAEPs was done in 10 patients with posterior fossa tumors and 14 patients with MS. Latency abnormalities were found in both groups without significant differences. However, deviations of wave V vectors from its normal orientation were observed in tumor cases, correlated with tumor size and latency increase. It is concluded that vector deviations may indicate distortion of auditory pathways in the brain-stem.

Brain stem auditory evoked potentials are related to interaural time discrimination in patients with multiple sclerosis.

In a combined psychophysical-electrophysiological study on 29 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), a compromised ability to make interaural time discriminations was nearly always found to be associated with 'abnormal' brain stem potentials evoked by clicks to at least one ear. However, no obvious relationships were found between evoked brain stem potentials and several other auditory behavioral measures such as interaural intensity discrimination, pure-tone thresholds and speech discrimination.

Brain-stem auditory evoked potential monitoring. Variations of stimulus artifact in brain death.

Brain-stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) were recorded in 20 subjects with brain death (mean age, 33.2 +/- 15.1 years) and 20 healthy volunteers (mean age, 29.8 +/- 6.8 years). Brain death was due to head injury (n = 14), encephalitis (n = 3), brain-stem hemorrhage (n = 1), cerebellar hemorrhage (n = 1) or cerebral infarction (n = 1). The presence, latency and amplitude of the individual BAEP components and variations of the stimulus artifact were evaluated. The mean (+/- S.D.) amplitude of the stimulus artifact was 0.26 +/- 0.12 microV in the brain-dead subjects and 0.09 +/- 0.05 microV

Effects of blood hyperviscosity on functional integrity in the brain stem: a brain stem evoked auditory potential study.

Clinical hemorheological and brain stem auditory evoked potential (BAEP) investigations were performed in patients with ischaemic brain stem stroke. Lesions were verified by MRI. 55 healthy persons with negative rheological and BAEP findings were used as controls (group A/1). 33 stroke patients with negative rheological parameters (group A/2) and 34 patients with hyperviscosity (group A/3) were also enrolled. In group A/3 bilateral pathological BAEP patterns were found, that could be explained by microcirculatory disturbances. 36 persons with verified blood hyperviscosity, but without neurolog
