Measurements of visual evoked potentials in Parkinson's disease.

Visual evoked potentials elicited by reversing grating patterns were recorded in 35 patients with Parkinson's disease and in 26 controls. The average latency of evoked potentials in patients with Parkinson's disease exceeded by two standard deviations the average of the age-matched control group of other neurological patients. Over two-thirds of all patients with Parkinson's disease had abnormal latency. In these patients latency did not correlate with age. In 5 patients the latency became less prolonged on levodopa therapy, suggesting that catecholaminergic pathways have either indirect or di

Coupling between visual evoked cerebral blood flow velocity responses and visual evoked potentials in migraneurs.

Neurovascular coupling may be altered in migraneurs. Therefore, visual evoked potentials (VEP) and visually evoked cerebral blood flow velocity responses (VEFR) were simultaneously recorded in 30 healthy controls and 30 migraneurs interictally using a checkerboard stimulus with visual contrasts of 1%, 10% and 100%. The VEFR were measured in the posterior cerebral artery using transcranial Doppler and VEP were recorded from occipital leads. We found an increase in VEFR and VEP in both the healthy and migraneur groups (P < 0.01). VEFR were significantly higher in migraneurs (P < 0.01), while VEP

Visual Evoked Potentials in Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSDs) are rare antibody-mediated disorders of the central nervous system, with a predilection for the spinal cord and optic nerves. The clinical utility of evoked potential recordings (EPs) has already been established for multiple sclerosis, in particular, that of the abnormal visual evoked potentials (VEP), a key criterion in the McDonald diagnostic criteria for MS. However, there have been few reports on EPs in patients with NMOSD. AIM: The aim of our study was to assess the possible involvement of the optical pathway through VEP respo

Migraine triggers and habituation of visual evoked potentials.

Background Identifying specific subsets of patients within the clinical spectrum of migraine could help in personalizing migraine treatment. Profiling patients by combining clinical characteristics and neurophysiological biomarkers is largely unexplored. We studied the association between migraine attack triggers and habituation of visual evoked potentials. Methods We personally interviewed 25 patients about their migraine triggers following a structured list, and measured the N1-P1 habituation slope over six blocks of 100 averaged pattern-reversal VEP afterwards. Results The mean number of tr

Visual Evoked Potentials in Primary Open Angle Glaucoma.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) assess the integrity of the visual pathways from the optic nerve to the occipital cortex. Optic disc cupping and visual field loss have been associated with prolongation of latency of VEP in primary open angle glaucoma (POAG). METHODS: Pattern reversal and flash VEP tests were done in consenting 20 primary open angle glaucoma eyes and 40 normal control eyes. RESULTS: In POAG cases, the refractive error [3.51 ± 1.88 versus 1.88 ± 1.11, D, p = 0.001], cup-disc ratio in percent [66.00 ± 16.98 versus 28.50 ± 5.80, p = 0.001], intraocular press

Visual evoked potentials in children with occipital epilepsies.

The objectives of this study are to see if any visual evoked potential (VEP) differences are present in two forms of occipital epilepsy, childhood epilepsy with occipital paroxysms (CEOP) and symptomatic occipital epilepsy (SOE) with respect to etiology, as CEOP is a benign age- and localization-related idiopathic epilepsy while SOE is a symptomatic form. Nineteen patients with CEOP and 13 patients with SOE were included in the study and P100 potential latency and amplitude values obtained from these patients were compared with the values recorded from normal controls. The amplitude values rec

Normalisation of visual evoked potentials after optic neuritis.

Normalisation of the visual evoked potential (VEP) in patients with optic neuritis (ON) appears to be a rare phenomenon. However, although several workers have indicated that it can happen, they have not followed up with subsequent VEP tests to confirm how long the VEP latency of the affected eye remains in the normal range. To resolve this, 18 patients with a clinical diagnosis of acute unilateral ON were followed for 5 years with repeated VEP tests to determine if the latency of the P2 wave from affected eye could return to the normal range. Furthermore, in cases where the latency returned t

Pattern visual evoked potentials in traumatic optic neuropathy.

To evaluate the characteristics of pattern visual evoked potentials (PVEPs) in traumatic optic neuropathy (TON) compared with optic neuritis (ON), we retrospectively studied 47 patients with TON and 64 patients with unilateral ON. PVEPs elicited by the stimulation with 3 reversals/s were recorded in all patients. A PVEP could be recorded in 29.8% of the TON patients and 49.6% of the ON patients at their first visit. In the 14 patients with TON and recordable PVEPs, the mean amplitude ratio (affected/fellow eye) was 0.29 +/- 0.03 (SE) and the mean delay of the peak latency was 17.9 +/- 2.9 ms.

Clinical application of motion-onset visual evoked potentials.

The results of motion-onset visual evoked potentials and pattern-reversal visual evoked potentials were compared in 5 adults with amblyopia, in 13 patients with unilateral retrobulbar neuritis and in 62 patients with multiple sclerosis. While the pattern-reversal visual evoked potentials had reduced amplitudes and prolonged latencies in all amblyopic eyes, the motion-onset visual evoked potentials were normal. Thus, motion-onset visual evoked potentials cannot be used for diagnosis of amblyopia. In patients with retrobulbar neuritis, both types of visual evoked potentials were delayed on stimu

Evolution of visual evoked potentials in optic neuritis.

The visual evoked potential (VEP) latency was either abnormally prolonged or absent in the involved eye of 47 patients with optic neuritis. Twenty-two of these patients with known multiple sclerosis (MS), had similar abnormalities to 25 patients with no clinical evidence of MS. Follow-up clinical assessment and VEP were done 10 to 42 (mean 22) months later in 34 patients. In 15 of 34 patients with no VEP from the involved eye during initial examination, 6 returned to normal, 8 had prolonged latencies and 1 still had no response at follow up. Of 19 patients who initially had prolonged latencies

Visual evoked potentials in a patient with prosopagnosia.

Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) were recorded from a 53-year-old man with prosopagnosia during presentation of slides of known and unknown faces and under two control conditions. ANOVA comparisons with a normal male group showed no differences in P100 amplitude, P300 amplitude or P300 latency. There were no significant evoked potential differences between the patient and controls specifically related to the face conditions. There was, however, a significant delay in the latency of P100 from both hemispheres during all types of stimuli. This prolonged latency was asymmetrical, showing a right s

[Contribution of visual evoked potentials (VEP) to neurology].

It is widely admitted that visual evoked potentials (VEPs) are clinically useful for diagnostic purposes in multiple sclerosis (MS). Delayed P100 component to pattern shift stimulation indicates a dissemination of the demyelinating process when routine ophthalmological investigations are normal. The delay of P100 may be observed early in the course of the disease following an attack of optic neuritis (ON); in the absence of previous ON the P100 latency may appear later after the onset. The P100 latency exceptionally returns to normal values. Compared with somatosensory or brain-stem auditory e

Clinical applications of visual evoked potentials in neurology.

Neurological applications of visual evoked potentials (VEP) have been expanding over the last decade. Stimulation techniques and waveform interpretation are reviewed. Physiologic variables including age, sex, habituation, refraction, cooperation, and factors influencing the amount of light reaching the retina will effect the VEP. Technical variables including luminance, check size, field size and color of check will also have an effect on the VEP. When properly performed, VEP can contribute important information on the visual pathways in patients with optic neuritis, multiple sclerosis, optic

Effects of visual contrast on visual evoked potentials and Doppler signal.

We studied visually evoked cerebral blood flow responses (VEFR) and visual evoked potentials (VEP) to different visual contrasts and analysed the relationship between them. The records were made from 35 healthy volunteers aged 38.6 +/- 10.1 years. The stimulus was a black-and-white checkerboard with visual contrasts (VC) of 1%, 10% and 100%. The VEFR were measured in the posterior cerebral artery using transcranial Doppler, and the VEP were recorded from the occipital leads. We found the relationship between visual contrast and VEFR (r = 0.79, P < 0.01) as well as between visual contrast and V

Visual evoked potentials in relation to visual acuity in macular disease.

PURPOSE: To investigate how central retinal function contributes to pattern visual evoked cortical potentials (PVECPs), we recorded transient and steady-state PVECPs in patients with macular disease and compared the results with those of patients with optic neuritis. The results were also evaluated for correlation with visual acuity and kinetic perimetric measurements. METHODS: PVECPs to 3 rev/s stimulation (transient) and 12 rev/s stimulation (steady-state) for check sizes 15' and 30' were obtained from all patients and age-matched healthy controls. The peak latency and amplitude of the P100

Visually evoked potentials.

The term visually evoked potential (VEP) refers to electrical potentials recorded from scalp overlying visual cortex that have been extracted from the electroencephalogram by signal averaging. Usually the recording electrode is placed on the midline of the occipital scalp at the back of the head. VEPs are used to quantify the functional integrity of the optic nerves, pathways to the visual cortex of the brain, and occipital cortex. Any abnormality that affects the visual pathways or visual cortex in the brain can affect the VEP. Examples include slowing neuronal transmission, such as produced
