UNLABELLED: The aim of this work was to examine the function of the respiratory system in pregnant women in the last month of non-complicated pregnancy. Spirometry with Lungtest 1000 was performed in 31 pregnant women at a mean gestational age of 37.72 weeks. In 24 of them the test was repeated after delivery (mean time from delivery = 39.40 days). The results were compared with a control group of 31 healthy non-pregnant resident of Szczecin. Prior to spirometry, all women underwent a physical examination with measurement of blood pressure, heart rate, body weight and height, chest and abdomin

Obesity is known to be a major risk factor of a whole range of cardiovascular, metabolic and respiratory disorders. The pattern of regional fat distribution plays an important role in the pre-disposition of obese subjects to respiratory complications. Obesity is responsible for important changes in respiratory function both during spontaneous breathing as well as during general anesthesia and mechanical ventilation. The most characteristic abnormalities consist of decreased functional residual capacity, reduced expiratory reserve volume, decreased compliance and increased resistance of the res

Previous studies from our institution have shown that neonates with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), whose best postductal PaO2 (BPDPO2) was less than 100 mm Hg while on maximal conventional mechanical ventilation (CMV), had a mortality exceeding 90%. When combined with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), the mortality rose to 100% in those infants who developed hypercarbia following decannulation. Historically, those patients have required increasing ventilator support, leading to iatrogenic lung damage, and eventual death. Intratracheal pulmonary ventilation (ITPV) using the re

We have studied the breathing pattern (minute ventilation VE, tidal volume VT, and respiratory rate f) in newborn rats before and during barbiturate (20-30 mg/kg ip) or ketamine anesthesia (40-80 mg/kg ip). Animals were intact and prone in a flow plethysmograph in thermoneutral conditions. Before anesthesia, CO2 breathing (5 min in 5% and 5 min in 10% CO2 in O2) resulted in a substantial increase in VE (169 and 208%, respectively), which was maintained throughout the entire CO2 breathing period. This indicates that, despite the extremely large VE per kilogram at rest, in these small animals th

BACKGROUND: Arterial rigidity and endothelial dysfunction are systemic manifestations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The decrease in renal vascular resistance in order to adapt the increase in glomerular filtration rate after oral protein loading is known as normal renal functional reserve. We tested the hypothesis that COPD patients, even in those with mild-to-moderate airflow obstruction, are affected by systemic inflammation associated with abnormal renal functional reserve.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study enrolled 24 current smokers with a cigarette smoking history ≥ 25

Obesity is a significant and increasingly common cause of respiratory compromise. It causes a decrease in static and dynamic pulmonary volumes. The expiratory reserve volume is one of the first to be affected. Obesity is associated with reduced airflow, increased airway hyperresponsiveness, and an increased risk of developing pulmonary hypertension, pulmonary embolism, respiratory tract infections, obstructive sleep apnoea and obesity hypoventilation syndrome. The physiological changes caused by obesity will eventually lead to hypoxic or hypercapnic respiratory failure. The pathophysiology of

OBJECTIVES: Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) is a growing health concern as it is associated with serious comorbidities. OSAS is mainly related to obesity, age, gender and a narrowed upper airway is commonly seen in patients with OSAS. This study aimed to compare spirometry parameters between obese OSAS patients and non-obese OSAS patients when patients moved from sitting to supine.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, Muscat, Oman, between December 2009 and December 2010. Patients with severe OSAS and who were OSAS treatment naïve we

OBJECTIVES: Respiratory complications are most common cause of morbidity/mortality in patients with cervical spinal cord injury (cSCI) due to respiratory muscle weakness and lower diaphragm position resulting in limited availability of inspiration, reduced thorax mobility and limited forced expiration. Differences in respiratory dysfunctions (RDs) in patients with motor complete versus incomplete cSCI were assessed.
DESIGN: Prospective longitudinal study, serial measurement.
SETTING: University hospital and ambulatory departments.
METHODS: Twenty two patients with acute cSCI were recruited.

The 1980 International Labour Office (ILO) classification of posteroanterior chest radiographs was used to obtain the scores for profusion of small opacities and pleural abnormalities of 172 men with confirmed or suspected disease of the lungs due to asbestos. After allowance had been made for age, stature, and smoking habit the quantitative score for area of diffuse pleural thickening seen in profile on both lateral chest walls contributed to reductions in inspiratory capacity, expiratory reserve volume, and forced expiratory flow rates. BACKGROUND: The oxidative burden in the airways is a hallmark of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
AIMS: This prospective, cross-over, placebo (PL)-controlled study was designed to investigate the effect of N-acetyl-l-cysteine (NAC) on hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)), nitrites and nitrates (NO(2)(-)+NO(3)(-)), and thiol (RSH) concentrations in exhaled breath condensate (EBC) in stable COPD patients (n=19, aged 52.6+/-15.6 years, 10 females, mean FEV(1) 95.2+/-23.8%, FEV(1)/FVC 69.1+/-11.4%).
METHODS: H(2)O(2), NO(2)(-)+NO(3)(-) and RSH concentrations in EBC were determined with homo

Therapeutic leukapheresis can control the white blood cell count (WBC) of pregnant women with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) who have hyperleukocytosis without leukostasis. The medical justification for this treatment has not been objectively documented. We report a 27-year-old woman, diagnosed with CML at 10-week gestation, who developed severe dyspnea on exertion. A workup that included chest CT and echocardiography with a bubble study detected no cardiopulmonary pathology to explain her symptoms, and thus she was referred for leukapheresis. Prior to her first leukapheresis, which lowere

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Ascites may cause or aggravate pulmonary dysfunction in patients with liver cirrhosis. Diuretics and paracentesis are the main therapies for ascites. The aim of the present study was to evaluate and compare the therapeutic effects of diuretics and large-volume paracentesis on lung function in 26 male patients with non-alcoholic cirrhosis and tense ascites.
METHODS: The patients were divided into two groups. Group A was composed of 13 subjects who were treated with diuretics including spironolactone (100-400 mg/day) and furosemide (80-320 mg/day). In group B, 13 subjects recei

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of imposed external resistance on the ventilatory response to He-O(2) breathing during peak exercise. To accomplish this purpose, separate inspiratory and expiratory external resistances were applied to offset for the decrease in intrapulmonary airway resistance with He-O(2) breathing. Seven men and three women (69+/-3 years, mean+/-S.D.) with normal pulmonary function performed graded cycle ergometry to exhaustion breathing room air, He-O(2) (79% He, 21% O(2)), He-O(2) with imposed expiratory resistance, and He-O(2) with imposed inspirator

This study aimed to study differences in lung function after surgical and percutaneous atrial septal defect (ASD) closure. Several studies have demonstrated abnormalities of pulmonary function in adults and children with ASD. These abnormalities persist even a few years after correction. This study compared pulmonary function between patients who underwent ASD closure by surgery and those who had closure by device. This is the ideal pediatric population for studying changes in lung function caused by cardiopulmonary bypass or sternotomy. The 46 patients in this study were treated by percutaneo

This study investigated the effects of different exercise interventions on cardiopulmonary function in male tobacco-dependent college students. Forty-five male tobacco-dependent college students were recruited as the tobacco-dependent (TB) group, and 45 non-tobacco-dependent college students were recruited as the control group. The TB group was randomly assigned to three subgroups: non-exercise (NE), high-intensity interval training (HIIT), and moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT). The HIIT and MICT groups underwent a 10-week exercise training, while the NE group received no intervent

Respiratory insufficiency in facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy has rarely been studied. We compared two age- and sex-matched groups of 29 patients, with and without respiratory dysfunction. Tests in the 29 patients with respiratory dysfunction suggested predominant expiratory muscle dysfunction, leading to ineffective cough in 17 patients. Supine and upright vital capacities were not different (P = 0.76), suggesting absence of diaphragmatic dysfunction. By stepwise regression, only expiratory reserve volume correlated with the Walton and Gardner-Medwin score (R(2) = 0.503; P = 0.001). Com

Obesity is a highly prevalent chronic disease that profoundly affects respiratory physiology. Excess adipose tissue alters lung volumes, chest-wall mechanics, and pleural pressures, leading to airway closure, atelectasis, and ventilation-perfusion mismatch. These changes have important implications for mechanical ventilation in both perioperative and critical care settings. This narrative review examines the impact of obesity on respiratory physiology during mechanical ventilation and discusses strategies for optimizing ventilatory management in patients with obesity and acute lung injury. We addressed two questions concerned with the metabolic cost and performance of respiratory muscles in healthy young subjects during exercise: 1) does exercise hyperpnea ever attain a "critical useful level"? and 2) is the work of breathing (WV) at maximum O2 uptake (VO2max) fatiguing to the respiratory muscles? During progressive exercise to maximum, we measured tidal expiratory flow-volume and transpulmonary pressure- (Ptp) volume loops. At rest, subjects mimicked their maximum and moderate exercise Ptp-volume loops, and we measured the O2 cost of the hyperpnea (VO2RM) and the length of time
