Role of medical conditions in the exacerbation of self-injurious behavior: an exploratory study.

Self-injurious behavior (SIB) is common among people with severe mental retardation who may also have multiple complex medical problems coupled with communication difficulties. This combination of factors sometimes makes it difficult to obtain accurate and detailed medical histories. In this exploratory descriptive study of 25 patients with SIB, 28% had previously undiagnosed medical conditions that could be expected to cause pain or discomfort. Six of the 7 patients experienced decreased SIB with treatment of their medical conditions. In patients with SIB, impaired communication skills, and c

[Behavioral characteristics of children with Prader-Willi syndrome in preschool and school age: an exploratory study on ritualistic behavior].

Parents of 64 children and youths with Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) describe their children's behaviour on the "Temperament and Atypical Behavior Scale" (TABS) and the German version of the "Developmental Behavior Checklist" (VFE). In the younger age group, there are no specific behavioural abnormalities which characterize a behavioral phenotype. In the older age group the data reveal elevated levels of abnormal behaviors (communication disturbance, social relations and disruptive behaviors). Parents stress ritualistic behaviors as especially challenging. The results concerning form and age-dep

Maternal noninfectious fever during pregnancy modulates offspring social behavior in rats: an exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal fever and elevated interleukin-6 (IL-6) during labor are linked to higher risks of neonatal seizures and cerebral palsy. In rats, IL-6-induced maternal fever is associated with neonatal brain inflammation. This study tests the hypothesis that induced maternal noninfectious fever modulates social behavior in rat offspring. METHODS: Two groups of near-term pregnant rats (n=6/group) received systemic IL-6 and the intracerebroventricular prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) or vehicle solutions. Maternal core temperature was recorded and pups were delivered naturally. Sixteen offspring (n

Helping the Noncompliant Child and Child Behavior Outcomes: An Exploratory Examination of Financial Strain.

Theoretical models and empirical research have highlighted the impact of economic disadvantage on children's psychosocial development broadly and the onset, maintenance, and treatment of early-onset (3-8 years) behavior disorders (BDs) more specifically. In the context of intervention, evidence suggests that economic disadvantage may pose risk for diminished parent-mediated treatment efficacy (e.g., Behavioral Parent Training [BPT]) given its impact on salient factors in the family system. Though, studies have shown significant variability in BPT outcomes within families experiencing economic

Etiological Pathways to the Emergence of Preteen Problematic Sexual Behavior: An Exploratory Mediational Model.

Studies examining the etiology of problematic sexual behavior (PSB) among pre-teen children often rely on identifying correlational relationships without examining potential causal mechanisms. This study describes an exploratory analysis of a potential mediational model where child sexual abuse (CSA) and child physical abuse (CPA) predict the onset of PSB through their impact on the emergence of posttraumatic stress (PTS) symptoms and self-dysregulation. The caregivers of 189 children between the ages of 3 and 11 years presenting for mental health treatment in the United States completed a bat

What interests young autistic children? An exploratory study of object exploration and repetitive behavior.

Behaviors characterized as restricted and repetitive (RRBs) in autism manifest in diverse ways, from motor mannerisms to intense interests, and are diagnostically defined as interfering with functioning. A variety of early autism interventions target RRBs as preoccupying young autistic children to the detriment of exploration and learning opportunities. In an exploratory study, we developed a novel stimulating play situation including objects of potential interest to autistic children, then investigated repetitive behaviors and object explorations in 49 autistic and 43 age-matched typical youn

Medicare's intensive behavioral therapy for obesity: an exploratory cost-effectiveness analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Medicare coverage recently was expanded to include intensive behavioral therapy for obese individuals in primary care settings. PURPOSE: To examine the potential cost effectiveness of Medicare's intensive behavioral therapy for obesity, accounting for uncertainty in effectiveness and utilization. METHODS: A Markov simulation model of type 2 diabetes was used to estimate long-term health benefits and healthcare system costs of intensive behavioral therapy for obesity in the Medicare population without diabetes relative to an alternative of usual care. Cohort statistics were base

Impairment of the organization of locomotor and exploratory behaviors in bile duct-ligated rats.

Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) arises from acute or chronic liver diseases and leads to several problems, including motor impairment. Animal models of chronic liver disease have extensively investigated the mechanisms of this disease. Impairment of locomotor activity has been described in different rat models. However, these studies are controversial and the majority has primarily analyzed activity parameters. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to evaluate locomotor and exploratory behavior in bile duct-ligated (BDL) rats to explore the spatial and temporal structure of behavior. Adult f

Changes in exploratory behavior in male Lister-Hooded rats in early and late adulthood.

Exploration encompasses a range of behaviors aimed at gathering information about the environment, which is then encoded and stored in memory. Memory processes support exploration by retaining past experiences, facilitating habituation to novelty, and aiding in the formation and updating of cognitive maps. As aging often leads to changes in memory function, we expected these changes to be detected by analyzing exploratory behaviors. In our experiment, we investigated the behavior of male rats at 2 and 9 months of age. We found that young rats reacted to novel objects with greater intensity and

Knowledge deficits and information-seeking behavior in leg ulcer patients: an exploratory qualitative study.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to explore knowledge deficits and underlying processes in information-seeking behavior in patients with leg ulcers. METHOD: A qualitative approach based on grounded theory methods with constant comparison was used. Semistructured interviews were held with 15 patients with venous leg ulcers in community care settings and wound care clinics between October 2008 and June 2009. Data processing and data analysis occurred via a cyclic process. RESULTS: Patients did not express a clear understanding of the causes of ulcers or their own contribution to enhance leg

Exploratory and displacement behavior in transgenic mice expressing high levels of brain TNF-alpha.

Studies reported recently have shown that tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) a cytokine released by macrophages and monocytes plays a key role in inflammatory processes and immune and neuro-endocrine regulation. TNF-alpha is also produced in the central nervous system (CNS). However, the role of this cytokine in the CNS is largely unknown, although evidence indicates that it is involved in various neurobehavioral manifestations. Using transgenic mice expressing high amounts of murine TNF-alpha transgene in the neurons of the CNS, we investigated the stereotyped, exploratory, and displacem

Acute forced exercise increases Bdnf IV mRNA and reduces exploratory behavior in C57BL/6J mice.

Acute exercise has been shown to improve memory in humans. Potential mechanisms include increased Bdnf expression, noradrenergic activity and modification of glutamate receptors. Because mice are commonly used to study exercise and brain plasticity, it is important to explore how acute exercise impacts behavior in this model. C57BL/6J mice were assigned to three groups: control, moderate-intensity running, and high-intensity running. Control mice were placed on a stationary treadmill for 30 minutes and moderate- and high-intensity mice ran for 30 minutes at 12 and 15-17 m/min, respectively. Mi

Intellectual Disability Profiles, Quality of Life and Maladaptive Behavior in Deaf Adults: An Exploratory Study.

Individuals who are prelingually deaf and have intellectual disabilities experience great challenges in their language, cognitive and social development, leading to heterogeneous profiles of intellectual and adaptive functioning. The present study describes these profiles, paying particular attention to domain discrepancies, and explores their associations with quality of life and maladaptive behavior. Twenty-nine adults with prelingual deafness (31% female) and mild intellectual functioning deficits (mean IQ = 67.3, SD = 6.5) were administered the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales-II (VABS-II

Long-term inflammatory pain does not impact exploratory behavior and stress coping strategies in mice.

Pain puts patients at risk for developing psychiatric conditions such as anxiety and depression. Preclinical mouse models of pain-induced affective behavior vary widely in methodology and results, impairing progress towards improved therapeutics. To systematically investigate the effect of long-term inflammatory pain on exploratory behavior and stress coping strategy, we assessed male C57BL/6J mice in the forced swim test (FST), elevated zero maze, and open field test at 4 and 6 weeks postinjection of Complete Freund's Adjuvant, while controlling for testing order and combination. Visuo-spatial orienting during active exploratory behavior: Processing of task-related and stimulus-related signals.

Functional imaging studies have associated dorsal and ventral fronto-parietal regions with the control of visuo-spatial attention. Previous studies demonstrated that the activity of both the dorsal and the ventral attention systems can be modulated by many different factors, related both to the stimuli and the task. However, the vast majority of this work utilized stereotyped paradigms with simple and repeated stimuli. This is at odd with any real life situation that instead involve complex combinations of different types of co-occurring signals, thus raising the question of the ecological sig

Phenomenology of repetitive and restrictive behaviors and sensory phenomena in neurodevelopmental disorders: an exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: Repetitive and restrictive behaviors (RRB) include simple motor stereotypes, tics and complex ritualized and rigid behaviors that are core symptoms in neurodevelopmental disorders such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), Tourette syndrome (TS) or autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Sensory phenomena (SP) are uncomfortable feelings, including bodily sensations, sense of inner tension, "just-right" perceptions, feelings of incompleteness, or "urge-only" phenomena, which have been described to precede, trigger, or accompany RRB. In such clinical contexts RRB and SP may be considered c

An exploratory two-part study of behavioral health service needs of women in jails.

Research shows that jailed women have disproportionately elevated rates of behavioral health conditions, including serious mental illness and substance use disorders; however, jails have not been able to effectively address these needs. There is a research gap in our understanding of mental health screening tools, linkages to care, and behavioral health service utilization for jailed women, specifically across multiple jails situated in urban and rural contexts. This two-part study compares the behavioral health needs and service utilization of women and men in eight Michigan jails. Results sh
