The International journal of eating disorders1993eng
Expressed Emotion (EE) is a measure of family interaction that has been shown to be useful for the investigation of many psychiatric disorders. This paper describes why it is appropriate to use it for the investigation of eating disorders. There is discussion of the findings that the levels tend to vary between the different eating disorders. The relationship between EE and treatment response is discussed. Suggestions are made for further research.

Undergraduate raters listened to Camberwell Family Interviews that had been conducted with the spouses of depressed patients and then rated each relative with a rating-scale assessment of expressed emotion (EE). Students' ratings of relatives' criticism, hostility, emotional overinvolvement, and warmth were significantly correlated with trained raters' EE assessments obtained in the conventional manner. Despite this correspondence, further analyses revealed that undergraduates' assessments of relatives did not predict 9-month relapse rates in patients. These results highlight the importance of

A Swedish version of the Camberwell Family Interview (CFI), a psychiatric, semistructured interview schedule for assessing a family's emotional atmosphere, is described. Thirty-two relatives of patients with schizophrenic disorders, according to DSM-III criteria, were interviewed. Eighteen relatives were interviewed twice, before and after one part of a psychoeducational programme. The total number of interviews analysed was 50. Two independent investigators rated the audiotape-recorded interviews to test the interrater reliability of 5 different measures of expressed emotion (critical remarks

OBJECTIVE: Emotion measurement is central to capturing acute alcohol reinforcement and so to informing models of alcohol use disorder etiology. Yet our understanding of how alcohol impacts emotion as assessed across diverse response modalities remains incomplete. The present study leverages a social alcohol-administration paradigm to assess drinking-related emotions, aiming to elucidate impacts of intoxication on self-reported versus behaviorally expressed emotion.
METHOD: Participants (N = 60; Mage = 22.5; 50% male; 55% White) attended two counterbalanced laboratory sessions, on one of which

Expressed emotion (EE) has been associated with poor outcomes in anorexia nervosa (AN); however, whether changes in EE predict superior treatment outcomes is unknown. The current study examined whether decreases in EE during an open trial of a novel family-based treatment for AN predicted symptoms at end of treatment. Forty-seven adolescents (12-18 years of age) with AN or sub-threshold AN and their parents (mothers: n = 47, fathers: n = 39) participated in 6 months of family treatment. Measures of AN symptomatology (Eating Disorder Examination completed by adolescent and end of treatment reco

The relationship of the Five Minute Speech Sample (FMSS) to the Camberwell Family Interview and its coding system were evaluated. The Camberwell Family Interview and the FMSS were administered to twenty-three relatives of patients diagnosed with schizophrenia. Overall, the results supported the utility of the FMSS and its coding system as a brief screening device for measuring expressed emotion.

Both high expressed emotion (EE) and psychiatric disorders were frequent in the parents of children and adolescents with disruptive behavior disorder (DBD, N = 34) and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD, N = 49) compared to normal controls (NC, N = 41). Parental psychiatric diagnosis was significantly related to high-EE in fathers (p = .0002) and mothers (p = .0001) of all groups combined, and in parents of the ill groups (p = .03). Absence of diagnosis was associated with low-EE in fathers (p = .0006) and mothers (p = .04) of the controls. Psychiatric diagnosis was the only significant predic

Indexes of expressed emotion (EE) in 58 relatives of patients with schizophrenia were related to those relatives' spontaneously expressed causal beliefs about the illness and about related symptoms and behaviors. Relatives made attributions predominantly to factors external, universal, and uncontrollable from their own perspective, and to factors internal, universal, and uncontrollable from the patient's perspective. Low-EE relatives were similar in their attributions to emotionally overinvolved relatives. Compared with these two groups, critical and/or hostile relatives made more attributions

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the current study is to examine expressed emotion (EE) and long-term treatment outcome among adolescents participating in a randomized controlled trial (RCT) for treatment of anorexia nervosa (AN). It was hypothesized that patients with high EE parents at baseline would show more severe symptoms at end-of-treatment, 12-month follow-up, and 4-year follow-up than patients from low EE families.
METHOD: Secondary data analysis was conducted of original RCT data from a two-site eating disorder treatment trial conducted in the United States. Participants were 121 adolescen

UNLABELLED: In the transition from childhood to adolescence, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) developmental trajectories diverge. Family environment, as indexed by parental expressed emotion, may moderate these trajectories. 388 children with ADHD and 127 controls were assessed using multi-informant, multimethod diagnostic procedures at up to 3 time points 1 year apart in an accelerated longitudinal design spanning ages 7-13 years. Latent-class growth analysis was used to identify developmental trajectories for parent- and teacher-rated ADHD and oppositional-defiant disorder (OD

OBJECTIVE: Expressed Emotion has been called a "black box", since little is known about contributing factors. The aim of this study was to examine which parental and which patient/illness-related characteristics contribute to maternal and paternal Expressed Emotion levels.
METHOD: Sixty adolescent girls with Anorexia Nervosa (AN) and their parents completed instruments that evaluate characteristics of the adolescent's illness and patient/parental psychological characteristics (depression; anxiety; obsession-compulsion; social anxiety and alexithymia). The following illness-related characteris

Expressed emotion (EE) is a measure of the affective relationship between two people characterized by criticism, hostility, and emotionally over-involved attitudes. Outside of the field of intellectual disabilities, there has been considerable interest in EE as an environmental marker that explains variance in the severity and/or course of a number of psychiatric disorders. Researchers have also studied EE in parents and found strong associations with children's behavior problems. In this review, we focus on the data from 11 published studies of EE in families of children and adults with intel

BACKGROUND: Expressed emotion (EE) is a well-established, important predictor of the relapse rate of patients suffering from schizophrenia and other severe psychiatric disorders. EE measures the quality of the social interaction between a patient and his most important (in)formal caregiver. The aim of this study was to investigate the quality of the relationship in the staff-patient dyad as measured by the concept of EE.
METHODS: EE was assessed using the Camberwell Family Interview (CFI, professionals) and the Perceived Criticism Scale (PCS, residents and professionals form) in a sample of 5

The social skills and social perception of schizophrenia patients in response to negative affect was examined as a function of family expressed emotion (EE). Patients participated in a role-play test, a social perception test, and a problem-solving discussion with a family member and were assessed on several measures of symptomatology. EE of family members was evaluated with the Camberwell Family Interview. On the role-play test, patients with less critical relatives became more assertive in response to increased negative affect from a confederate portraying either a family member or friend, b

The emotional climate within the home is a powerful predictor of relapse and remission in schizophrenic disorders. Research has focused on "expressed emotion" (EE), a measure of relatives' expressed attitudes about the patient. Recently, EE has become a focus of controversy. Correcting a misperception that EE research blames families of schizophrenic patients, we clarify the concepts and data base that underlie EE research, provide an operational definition of EE, and briefly review the history of EE research in schizophrenia and other disorders. Then, methodological and conceptual issues in t

Living in high-expressed emotion (EE) environments, characterized by critical, hostile, or over-involved family attitudes, has been linked to increased relapse rates among individuals with schizophrenia (SZ). In our previous work (Wang et al., 2023), we conducted the first feasibility study of using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) with our developed EE stimuli to examine cortical hemodynamics in SZ. To better understand the neural mechanisms underlying EE environmental factors in SZ, we extended our investigation by employing functional connectivity (FC) analysis with a graph the

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia is a clinical syndrome that is variable, but highly disturbing; its psychopathology involves cognition, emotion, perception, and other aspects of behaviour. Schizophrenic patients who are hospitalised, who return to a family environment characterised by high levels of criticism, excessive emotional involvement, or hostility (referred to as high expressed emotion) are more likely to experience the recurrence than schizophrenic patients returning to families characterised by low expressed emotion.
AIM: We aimed to investigate the level of care load in the families of s

OBJECTIVE: To examine the cultural variability in Expressed Emotion (EE) among families of white and ethnic minority adolescents with anorexia nervosa (AN).
METHOD: One-hundred and eighty-nine AN patients and their parents completed the Eating Disorder Examination and the Structured Clinical Family Interview, from which EE ratings were made.
RESULTS: No differences were found in the number of white and minority families classified as high EE. White families were higher on warmth (W) and tended to be higher on positive remarks (PR) than minority families. High EE was associated with a longer

The aim of this study was to verify the level of expressed emotion (EE) as perceived from patients with an eating disorder (ED). The Italian translation of the Level of Expressed Emotion Scale was administered to 63 female patients with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, diagnosis of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder and 63 control subjects, according to a case-control procedure. Patients with ED showed higher level of perceived EE than controls, whereas no significant differences were observed when comparing the 3 patient subgroup

OBJECTIVE: Family interventions have been found to be effective in pediatric bipolar disorder (BD). This study examined the moderating effects of parental expressed emotion (EE) on the 2-year symptomatic outcomes of adolescent BD patients assigned to family-focused therapy for adolescents (FFT-A) or a brief psychoeducational treatment (enhanced care [EC]).
METHOD: A referred sample of 58 adolescents (mean age 14.5 +/- 1.6 years, range 13-17 years) with BD I, II, or not otherwise specified was randomly allocated after a mood episode to FFT-A or EC, both with protocol pharmacotherapy. Levels of
