A Wearable System for Remote Wrist Skin Temperature Monitoring to Assess Skin Thermal Response to Extreme Cold: A Case Study.

Skin temperature measurement is a complex issue. Skin tissue is one of the main thermoregulatory organs and takes major responsibility for heat exchange in the organism. Accurate skin temperature measurement may contribute to better estimation of deep core temperature, which is why enhancing possibilities of skin temperature measurement is considered substantial. However, the real value of the skin temperature can be influenced by many biological and non-biological factors. Some of the external factors such as extensive wind or extreme ambient temperature may significantly influence the raw va

Casualty evacuation in arctic and extreme cold environments: A paradigm shift for traumatic hypothermia management in tactical combat casualty care.

In Arctic or extreme cold environments of Alaska, trauma care is complicated by large expanses of geography and lack of forward-positioned resources. This paper presents four hypothetical vignettes highlighting austere cold medical priorities: (1) traumatic hypothermia management as part of Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) is clinically and tactically important and hypothermia needs to be reprioritized in the MARCH algorithm to MhARCH; (2) at present it is unknown which TCCC recommended medical equipment/supplies will function as designed in the extreme cold; (3) ensuring advanced resuscit

Ecological resilience of the rectal microbiome to environmental stressors in Hulunbuir grazing sheep: response to feed restriction and extreme cold challenge.

The gut microbiota is essential for helping animals to adapt to food shortages and extreme environments. In China's Hulunbuir region, local grazing sheep endure harsh winters characterized by intense cold and limited food supply. Uncovering the adaptive mechanisms that underpin their resilience is essential for improving their productivity, breeding practices, and management strategies. This research investigated the effects of feed restriction (set at 40 % of ad libitum intake) and extreme cold stress (temperature-humidity index set at 22.27) on the dynamics of gut microbiota in Hulunbuir she

A systematic review and meta-analysis comparing the health burden of extreme heat and cold on mortality and urgent care utilization.

BACKGROUND: Globally, extreme temperature events are expected to increase in frequency and intensity, yet the evidence on the impact of extreme temperatures on urgent care indicators is not extensively documented. METHODS: Relevant observational quantitative studies from 2000 to 2024 were searched. We applied MeSH search approach to construct the search terms and included studies meeting the PECOS (Population, Exposure, Comparator, Outcome and Study design) criteria. Urgent care utilization included hospitalization, emergency department visits (EDVs), length of stay (LoS), and medical costs.

The effect of a single closed-circuit rebreather decompression dive in extremely cold water to cardiac function.

PURPOSE: Dive-induced cardiac and hemodynamic changes are caused by various mechanisms, and they are aggravated by cold water. Therefore, aging divers with pre-existing cardiovascular conditions may be at risk of acute myocardial infarction, heart failure, or arrhythmias while diving. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of a single decompression CCR dive in arctic cold water on cardiac function in Finnish technical divers. METHODS: Thirty-nine divers performed one identical 45 mfw CCR dive in 2-4 °C water. Hydration and cardiac functions were assessed before and after the dive. Det

Chrysozyma moheensis sp. nov., a novel psychrotolerant yeast isolated from the extremely cold region of China.

Three yeast isolates representing a novel psychrotolerant yeast species were recovered from soil collected in Mohe City, Heilongjiang Province, PR China. The phylogenetic analyses based on the D1/D2 domains of the LSU rRNA and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region showed that the new yeast formed a well-supported clade closely related to Chrysozyma sorbariae CGMCC 2.2768T. However, the new isolate differed from C. sorbariae CGMCC 2.2768T by 8.15% sequence divergence (30 nt differences and 23 gaps out of 650 bp) in the ITS region and by 2.16% sequence divergence (9 substitutions and 4 indels

[Symptomatological and electrophysiological study on cold paresis in juvenile muscular atrophy of distal upper extremity (Hirayama's disease)].

Patients with juvenile muscular atrophy of distal upper extremity (Hirayama's disease) often show marked weakness of the fingers occurring with exposure to cold. We term this phenomenon cold paresis. We conducted an original test to induce cold paresis (Cold Paresis Inducement Test) in 11 patients of this disease and 10 normal controls. Cold paresis was induced in 9 of 11 patients, but was not induced in the 2 patients who had the disease longer than 20 years and in all normal controls. We examined the electromyogram of abductor digiti minimi during 5 Hz and 20 Hz rate of ulnar nerve stimulati

Research on deformation characteristics and mechanisms of an open pit coal mine landslide event in extremely cold region.

For the sake of heavy rainfall, a landslide occurred at the Baorixile open-pit coal mine, at 13:40 (Beijing time, UTC + 8) on April 30, 2020, in China. The landslide event was about 130 × 105 m3 and produced considerable damage in addition to economic loss. Determining the trigger factors and ascertaining unstable slopes and initial displacements - which can be attained by utilizing remote sensing data are pivotal for disaster prevention and risk reduction in open-pit mining areas. An exhaustive integrated methodology was applied. This methodology combined post-hazard investigation, UAV aerial

Acute and chronic extreme cold weather events influence hypothalamic and testicular gene networks in a free-living Arctic breeding songbird, the Lapland longspur.

Here we explore the regulatory mechanisms underlying breeding stage specific endocrine phenotypes and their response to both acute and chronic extreme weather in male Lapland longspurs (Calcarius lapponicus). In the chronically extreme cold spring of 2013, birds were collected following a delayed arrival on their Alaskan breeding grounds. Whereas in 2016 during typical weather conditions, birds were collected at their arrival on their breeding grounds and during incubation - either in the presence or absence of a snowstorm. We quantified hypothalamic and gonadal gene expression, steroid hormon

Cold Extremities and Underweight as a Combined Risk Profile for Open-Angle Glaucoma: A Population-Based Cross-Sectional Study in Korea.

Background/Objectives: Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness worldwide. Open-angle glaucoma (OAG) predominates in East Asian populations, with normal-tension glaucoma accounting for the majority of cases. Although intraocular pressure remains the most established risk factor, non-pressure-dependent mechanisms, including ocular vascular dysregulation, warrant further investigation. Cold extremities, a hallmark of Flammer syndrome reflecting primary vascular dysregulation, and underweight (body mass index [BMI] < 18.5 kg/m2) are each independently associated with OAG; h

Cold Environment-Associated Extremity Lesions or Severe Hypothermia Help Differentiate Between Frostbitten and Trench Foot (Immersion Foot).

Cold associated foot injuries, such as frostbite and trench foot (immersion foot) are relatively common in cold environments. The former is classified as a freezing cold injury, and the latter as a nonfreezing cold injury. Trench foot is sometimes misdiagnosed as frostbite, and rapid rewarming exacerbates the condition. This paper aims to help differentiate between frostbitten foot and trench foot. This study included patients with frostbitten foot or trench foot treated at our hospital between December 2005 and May 2023. The differences in sex, age, month of injury, conditions at the time of

Long-term exposure to extreme heat and cold and cognitive decline in older adults: Results from the Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) cohort.

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests that short-term exposures to extreme heat and/or cold are associated with cognitive decline in elderly people. The effects of long-term exposures to temperature extremes are not well understood. METHODS: We used longitudinal data (2006-2018) from a cohort of 30,000 Black and White adults 45 and older. Exposures to regionally specific extreme temperatures, heat and cold days, were obtained from the National Neighborhood Data Archive (NANDA). Associations of cognition with the number of extreme heat/cold days were tested using mixed effects linear regression models

Combined effects of extreme cold events and fine particulate matter on the success rate of in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer: A multi-center retrospective cohort study in China.

As climate change intensifies, the rising frequency of extreme cold events (ECEs) and the known effects of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) on reproductive health highlight a gap in understanding their combined impact on in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET) success rate. We conducted a multicenter retrospective cohort study in China to explore the association between ECEs and the risk of clinical pregnancy failure (CPF) undergoing IVF-ET, and the combined effects of ECEs and PM2.5 on CPF risk. The study included a total of 96,623 women undergoing IVF-ET, including 40,798 women underg
