A comprehensive review on chromium (Cr) contamination and Cr(VI)-resistant extremophiles in diverse extreme environments.

Chromium (Cr) compounds are usually toxins and exist abundantly in two different forms, Cr(VI) and Cr(III), in nature. Their contamination in any environment is a major problem. Many extreme environments including cold climate, warm climate, acidic environment, basic/alkaline environment, hypersaline environment, radiation, drought, high pressure, and anaerobic conditions have accumulated elevated Cr contamination. These harsh physicochemical conditions associated with Cr(VI) contamination damage biological systems in various ways. However, several unique microorganisms belonging to phylogenet

Human Microbiome Alterations in Antarctic Isolated, Confined, and Extreme (ICE) Environments: A Systematic Review and Meta-Regression.

Antarctica is one of the most extreme and isolated environments on Earth, serving as a natural laboratory for studying human physiological and microbial adaptation under stress. This systematic review and meta-regression evaluated how exposure to Antarctica's isolated, confined, and extreme (ICE) environments impacts the human microbiome, considering environmental and behavioral factors that may modulate these alterations. Following PRISMA guidelines and being registered with PROSPERO (CRD42024558423), comprehensive searches were conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Cochrane, and LILACS withou

Social interactions in isolated, confined, and extreme environments: A study of Antarctic winter teams using wearable sensors.

Long-duration space missions expose crews to extreme psychological and social stressors due to prolonged isolation and confinement. To examine how such conditions impact individual and team functioning, we studied a 10-mo Antarctic overwintering mission at Concordia Station, an analog for spaceflight, using self-report measures and wearable proximity sensors. Twelve crew members were assessed at four time-points. Results revealed a progressive increase in feelings of loneliness and conflict, while cohesion and individual performance declined. Close-range interactions were positively associated

GC/MS Fatty Acid Profile of Marine-Derived Actinomycetes from Extreme Environments: Chemotaxonomic Insights and Biotechnological Potential.

This study investigated the fatty acids (FA) profile of 54 actinomycete strains isolated from marine sediments collected off the Portugal continental coast, specifically from the Estremadura Spur pockmarks field, by GC/MS. Fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) were prepared from the ethyl acetate lipidic extracts of these strains and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS), with FA identification performed using the NIST library. The identified FAs varied from C12:0 to C20:0, where 32 distinct FAs were identified, including 7 branched-chain fatty acids (BCFAs), 9 odd-chain fatty ac

Supercritical CO2-foamed polyimide/SiO2 nanoporous film for transparent radiative cooling and thermal insulation in extreme environments.

Transparent thermal management films must combine high visible-light (VIS) transmittance, ultraviolet (UV) shielding, low thermal conductivity, and high mid-infrared (MIR) emissivity. Here, molecular design was combined with SiO2-assisted heterogeneous nucleation during supercritical carbon dioxide (ScCO2) foaming to fabricate a nanoporous fluorinated polyimide (PI) film. The optimized foamed film (FP6S1) exhibits an average pore diameter of 71.8 nm, a VIS transmittance of 77.9%, UV blocking above 99.6%, an emissivity of 91.2% over 8-13 μm, and a thermal conductivity of 52 mW m-1 K-1. Dual-Layer Composite Packaged FBG Sensor Array with Enhanced Thermal and Bending Performance for Extreme Engineering Environments.

Aerospace and power equipment require precise temperature monitoring in extremely high-temperature environments, which often feature narrow and curved installation spaces. Since traditional thermocouples cannot provide both measurement performance and structural flexibility simultaneously, we propose a flexible fiber Bragg grating (FBG) temperature-sensing array. The sensor features a dual-layer composite packaging structure comprising an inner braided quartz-wool layer and an outer nickel-based alloy tube. Combined with a high-temperature annealing process, the packaged array was evaluated ag

Microbial Ecosystems in Movile Cave: An Environment of Extreme Life.

Movile Cave, situated in Romania close to the Black Sea, constitutes a distinct and challenging environment for life. Its partially submerged ecosystem depends on chemolithotrophic processes for its energetics, which are fed by a continuous hypogenic inflow of mesothermal waters rich in reduced chemicals such as hydrogen sulfide and methane. We sampled a variety of cave sublocations over the course of three years. Furthermore, in a microcosm experiment, minerals were incubated in the cave waters for one year. Both endemic cave samples and extracts from the minerals were subjected to 16S rRNA a

Eye injuries in the extreme environment ultra-marathon runner.

We present the case of an ultra-marathon runner who developed a painful irritated eye due to prolonged exposure to high wind speed and sub-zero temperatures causing transient freezing and subsequent abrasion of the cornea. We recommend that all ultra-marathon runners racing in windy or exposed conditions should wear wrap-around eye protection or goggles. If runners present to checkpoints or after the race to primary care or the emergency department with ocular pain, corneal freezing and abrasions should be considered. Management should include ocular examination and withdrawing the runner from

Management of an extremely premature infant in the out-of-hospital environment.

The rate of premature infant mortality has decreased over the last several decades, with an accompanying decrease in the gestational age of premature infants who survive to hospital discharge. Emergency medical services (EMS) providers are sometimes called to provide prehospital care for infants born at the edge of viability. Such extremely premature infants (EPIs) present medical and ethical challenges. In this case report, we describe an infant born at 24 weeks into a toilet by a mother who thought she had miscarried. The EMS providers evaluated the infant as nonviable and placed him in a pl

Developing Wolbachia-based disease interventions for an extreme environment.

Aedes aegypti mosquitoes carrying self-spreading, virus-blocking Wolbachia bacteria are being deployed to suppress dengue transmission. However, there are challenges in applying this technology in extreme environments. We introduced two Wolbachia strains into Ae. aegypti from Saudi Arabia for a release program in the hot coastal city of Jeddah. Wolbachia reduced infection and dissemination of dengue virus (DENV2) in Saudi Arabian mosquitoes and showed complete maternal transmission and cytoplasmic incompatibility. Wolbachia reduced egg hatch under a range of environmental conditions, with the

Effects of extreme precipitation on bacterial communities and bioaerosol composition: Dispersion in urban outdoor environments and health risks.

Concerns about contaminants dispersed by seasonal precipitation have grown due to their potential hazards to outdoor environments and human health. However, studies on the crucial environmental factors influencing dispersion changes in bacterial communities are limited. This research adopted four-season in situ monitoring and sequencing techniques to examine the regional distribution profiles of bioaerosols, bacterial communities, and risks associated with extreme snowfall versus rainfall events in two monsoon cities. In the early-hours of winter snowfall, airborne cultivable bioaerosol concen

Physical Activity, Seasonal Sensitivity and Psychological Well-Being of People of Different Age Groups Living in Extreme Environments.

Physical activity can prevent many organic and mental pathologies. For people living in extreme southern high-latitude environments, weather conditions can affect these activities, altering their psychological well-being and favoring the prevalence of seasonal sensitivity (SS). This study aims to determine the relationships between the practice of physical activity, seasonal sensitivity and well-being in people living in high southern latitudes. A cross-sectional study was conducted, using the Seasonal Pattern Assessment Questionnaire (SPAQ), applying a psychological well-being scale, and dete

MXene@c-MWCNT Adhesive Silica Nanofiber Membranes Enhancing Electromagnetic Interference Shielding and Thermal Insulation Performance in Extreme Environments.

A lightweight flexible thermally stable composite is fabricated by combining silica nanofiber membranes (SNM) with MXene@c-MWCNT hybrid film. The flexible SNM with outstanding thermal insulation are prepared from tetraethyl orthosilicate hydrolysis and condensation by electrospinning and high-temperature calcination; the MXene@c-MWCNTx:y films are prepared by vacuum filtration technology. In particular, the SNM and MXene@c-MWCNT6:4 as one unit layer (SMC1) are bonded together with 5 wt% polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) solution, which exhibits low thermal conductivity (0.066 W m-1 K-1) and good electro

Detection of Stress Levels from Biosignals Measured in Virtual Reality Environments Using a Kernel-Based Extreme Learning Machine.

Virtual reality (VR) is a computer technique that creates an artificial environment composed of realistic images, sounds, and other sensations. Many researchers have used VR devices to generate various stimuli, and have utilized them to perform experiments or to provide treatment. In this study, the participants performed mental tasks using a VR device while physiological signals were measured: a photoplethysmogram (PPG), electrodermal activity (EDA), and skin temperature (SKT). In general, stress is an important factor that can influence the autonomic nervous system (ANS). Heart-rate variabil

Assessment of metal contamination, bioavailability, toxicity and bioaccumulation in extreme metallic environments (Iberian Pyrite Belt) using Corbicula fluminea.

The Iberian Pyrite Belt (SW Iberian Peninsula) has intense mining activity. Currently, its fluvial networks receive extremely acid lixiviate residue discharges that are rich in sulphates and metals in solution (acid mine drainage, AMD) from abandoned mines. In the current study, the sediment and water quality were analysed in three different areas of the Odiel River to assess the risk associated with the metal content and its speciation and bioavailability. Furthermore, sediment contact bioassays were performed using the freshwater clam Corbicula fluminea to determine its adequacy as a biomoni

Multiscale Interpenetrated/Interconnected Network Design Confers All-Carbon Aerogels with Unprecedented Thermomechanical Properties for Thermal Insulation under Extreme Environments.

With ultralight weight, low thermal conductivity, and extraordinary high-temperature resistance, carbon aerogels hold tremendous potential against severe thermal threats encountered by hypersonic vehicles during the in-orbit operation and re-entry process. However, current 3D aerogels are plagued by irreconcilable contradictions between adiabatic and mechanical performance due to monotonicity of the building blocks or uncontrollable assembly behavior. Herein, a spatially confined assembly strategy of multiscale low-dimensional nanocarbons is reported to decouple the stress and heat transfer. T

Built environment disparities are amplified during extreme weather recovery.

Extreme weather events such as hurricanes and floods cause increasing damage to communities, leading to substantial economic losses and displacement of populations1-6. Previous research suggests that there are disparities in the resilience capacity of neighbourhoods, predicting a recovery mechanism of either segmented withdrawal or reinforcement across different neighbourhood groups7-12. Assessing these hypotheses and investigating if-and to what extent-neighbourhood built environments recover at scale has been difficult because previous measures have relied on aggregated survey data1,7,9-14.

Chemical Probes to Interrogate the Extreme Environment of Mosquito Larval Guts.

Mosquito control methods are vital to curtail the spread of life-threatening illnesses, such as dengue fever, malaria, and yellow fever. Vector control technologies must be selective to minimize deleterious effects on our ecosystem. Successful methods that control mosquito larva populations utilize the uniquely high alkaline nature of the midgut. Here, we present novel protected triazabutadienes (pTBD) that are deprotected under basic conditions of the larval midgut, releasing an aryl diazonium ion (ADI) that results in protein modification. The probes contain a bioorthogonal terminal alkyne h
