Working in Extreme Heat, an Invisible Occupational Risk: Legislation, Risk Management and Policy Recommendations for Türkiye: Turkish Thoracic Society Workshop Report on the Regulation of Working Conditions in Extreme Heat.

Extreme heat, amplified by climate change, has become a predictable and escalating occupational hazard in Türkiye, increasing the burden of heat-related illnesses, traumatic workplace injuries, and productivity losses among both outdoor and indoor workers, particularly in labor-intensive sectors and among vulnerable populations. This Turkish Thoracic Society workshop report synthesizes interdisciplinary expert input and available evidence to propose a practical, prevention-focused framework for regulating working conditions in extreme temperatures. The recommendations were systematically devel

Drought, Extreme Heat, and Intimate Partner Violence in Low- and Middle-Income Countries.

IMPORTANCE: Recent evidence has shown that elevated temperatures are associated with a higher risk of intimate partner violence (IPV), a serious violation of human rights. However, it remains unclear whether drought also heightens the risk and whether drought and extreme heat jointly affect IPV. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the interactive association between drought, extreme heat, and IPV in 42 low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study included women answering multicluster surveys in sub-Saharan Africa, South and Southeast Asia, Lat

Bridging Data Systems to Develop Interventions for Older Adults Exposed to Extreme Heat.

BACKGROUND: The development of clinical tools to combat extreme heat events (EHEs) is urgently needed. However, the collection, linkage, and application of data and technology required to address the health consequences of EHEs-through individualized decision-making, population-focused interventions, and health system planning-remain in its infancy despite the wealth of data infrastructure in health care systems. METHODS: In this paper, we describe a use case for data-intensive system architecture that can enable best practices for addressing EHE-related health risks in older adults with card

Extreme heat and human fertility: Amplified challenges in the era of climate change.

Rising global temperatures and extreme heat events, exacerbated by climate change, pose critical public health challenges, with understudied consequences for human fertility and reproductive health (FRH). While heat-related morbidity and mortality have gained substantial attention, the direct and indirect impacts of thermal stress on FRH-particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs)-remain poorly understood. In LMICs, socioeconomic disparities, environmental vulnerabilities, and cultural norms favoring larger families amplify risks and disproportionately burden marginalized populati

Extreme heat impacts on daily life and adaptive behaviours captured through lived experience.

So far, there has been little evidence of the impact of extreme heat on behaviour and wellbeing in daily life, beyond gross health metrics like hospital admissions and mortality. Data are needed to better understand the relative impact of a changing climate across life course strata and ultimately inform effective adaptation strategies. Using the UK September 2023 heatwave as a case study, we surveyed 3242 participants from the Avon longitudinal study of parents and children about their lived experience of extreme heat. Responses evidenced perceived adverse impacts on sleep quality (67% of the

Impacts of extreme heat on oral health and dentistry in India: a narrative review.

In order to understand the impacts of extreme heat on oral health and dentistry this study has been undertaken. In the era of global warming and climate change extreme heat events (EHEs) are increasing across the world. The rising frequency, intensity, and duration of EHEs over India poses new hurdles for oral health and dentistry. In this review, the impacts of extreme heat (EH) on oral health and dentistry in India have been highlighted. Heat-induced dehydration leads to reduced salivary flow, which increases the risk of dental caries, periodontal disease, oral mucosal lesions, and infection

Correcting for spatial and temporal dependence in estimating the economic effect of extreme heat.

Callahan and Mankin argue that extreme heat, measured by maximum 5-day average temperature, has a precise and economically meaningful effect on subnational gross domestic product per-capita growth. We reexamine this claim and find that the reported precision does not survive methods that respect the data's spatial and temporal dependence. Country-preserving permutations and postselection correction substantially widen marginal-effect intervals. The estimates are also highly sensitive to influential countries and years, with exclusions sometimes collapsing the effect or reversing its sign. A hi

Impact of Extreme Heat Events on Emergency Department Visits in North Carolina (2007-2011).

Extreme heat is the leading cause of weather-related mortality in the U.S. Extreme heat also affects human health through heat stress and can exacerbate underlying medical conditions that lead to increased morbidity and mortality. In this study, data on emergency department (ED) visits for heat-related illness (HRI) and other selected diseases were analyzed during three heat events across North Carolina from 2007 to 2011. These heat events were identified based on the issuance and verification of heat products from local National Weather Service forecast offices (i.e. Heat Advisory, Heat Watch

Combined effects of extreme heat and NO2 on liver disease progression of T2DM mice.

Extreme hot temperature and heavy traffic pollution are increasingly prevalent environmental stressors and are independently associated with adverse metabolic outcomes, but their combined effects on metabolically-associated liver disease (MASLD) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) remain unclear. This study employed a T2DM mouse model exposed to 4 h of daily extreme heat at 40°C and nitrogen dioxide with 5 ppm during six weeks in order to assess their interaction in relation to MASLD development. Results showed that combined exposure raised blood glucose levels and aggravated hepatic histopatho

Safeguarding Patients with End-Stage Kidney Disease From Climate-driven Extreme Heat and Hurricanes.

5wPatients with end stage kidney disease (ESKD) who receive in-center hemodialysis are disproportionately vulnerable to extreme weather events, including hurricanes and heat waves, that may disrupt access to healthcare providers, and life-sustaining treatments. This current era of climate-driven compounding disasters is progressively elevating the level of threat to the health and well-being of patients with ESKD. This analysis brings together multi-disciplinary expertise to explore the contours of this increasingly complex risk landscape. Despite the challenges, important advances have been m

Plasma epinephrine and norepinephrine responses to extreme heat exposures in young and older adults.

Hyperthermia is known as a hyperadrenergic state, yet there is a lack of data on the sympathetic responses to ambient heat stress in humans. Therefore, we investigated the plasma epinephrine and norepinephrine concentrations of healthy young and older adults exposed to 3 h of very hot and dry, as well as hot and humid, heat, both with accompanying activities of daily living. We hypothesized that older adults, compared with young adults, would have augmented increases in epinephrine and norepinephrine concentrations secondary to increased thermal strain. Young (n = 20) and older (n = 18) partic

Heatstroke presentations to urban hospitals during BC's extreme heat event: lessons for the future.

BACKGROUND: Climate change is leading to more extreme heat events in temperate climates that typically have low levels of preparedness. Our objective was to describe the characteristics, treatments, and outcomes of adults presenting to hospitals with heatstroke during BC's 2021 heat dome. METHODS: We conducted a review of consecutive adults presenting to 7 hospitals in BC's Lower Mainland. We screened the triage records of all patients presenting between June 25th and 30th, 2021 for complaints related to heat, and reviewed the full records of those who met heatstroke criteria. Our primary out

Strategies to reduce the harmful effects of extreme heat events: a four-city study.

Extreme heat events (EHEs) are becoming more intense, more frequent and longer lasting in the 21st century. These events can disproportionately impact the health of low-income, minority, and urban populations. To better understand heat-related intervention strategies used by four U.S. cities, we conducted 73 semi-structured interviews with government and non-governmental organization leaders representing public health, general social services, emergency management, meteorology, and the environmental planning sectors in Detroit, MI; New York City, NY; Philadelphia, PA and Phoenix, AZ-cities sel
