A low cost surrogate eye model for corneal foreign body removal.

BACKGROUND: Patients commonly present to the Emergency Department with a corneal foreign body (FB). There is currently a lack of adequate training for junior doctors in the management of this condition. Our self-made surrogate eye model aims to address this void in our junior doctors' knowledge. METHODS: Participants were guided through a hands-on session with a slit-lamp using our eye model, which is made of a hemispherical agar embedded with pencil lead fragments simulating as FBs. Using a 7-point Likert scale, all participants completed a questionnaire both before and after training, for:

[A case of penetration into the eye and orbit of a giant foreign body (a coil spring)].

Descriptions of penetration of large foreign bodies into the orbit are rare. The authors describe a patient who got a coil spring, 40 cm x 2.5 mm in size, in the orbit, when collecting metal scrap; the spring slipped off and penetrated into the orbit. Before examination the exterior part of the spring at the orbital edge was cut off with cutting pliers. Ultrasonic scanning was used before and during surgery, that permitted visual monitoring of the operation and helped prevent possible complications when removing the fragment, thus helping a successful outcome of surgery.

[Clinical analysis of 160 cases with the magnetic foreign bodies in the posterior segment of the eye].

One hundred and sixty cases of magnetic foreign bodies in the posterior segment of the eye are reported. Most of the foreign bodies are small (61.2% are less than 2mm) and near the wall of the eye (73.7% are less than 2mm). 110 cases were successfully operated in conventional way and just 20 cases needed to have vitrectomy. The result of the operation depends on the damage of the eye, location of the foreign body and the complication of the operation. In 77.6% of the cases, the wound was on the cornea or limbus. That is one of the important factors to affect the patients' postoperation vision.

[Penetrating and perforating eye injuries with foreign bodies during motorized brush-cutting while wearing head protection gear].

BACKGROUND: Protective clothing is prescribed concerning gloves, shoes, protective trousers and a helmet for protection of hearing and the face during brush-cutter work. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Seven patients were observed in a time period from 1994 to 1998. Mostly a nylon head protection had been used. The side of the helmet has no protection shield. The 1- to 4-mm large foreign bodies passed the head protection shield from the side or by entering through the holes of the nylon mesh which may be not small enough to stop the foreign body. A pars plana vitrectomy with foreign body removal was pe

[Perforating eye injury with retained inorganic intraorbital foreign body--case report].

Authors would like to present a case of perforating eye injury with inorganic foreign body, which consequently stick behind the globe in muscular cone space. We discuss visual prognosis after injury which depends on injury mechanism, wound extension and localization as well as tolerance of intraorbital foreign body through eye's tissue and prevention of eye injuries. We would like to stress the necessity of meticulous primary microsurgical repair and possible secondary surgical reparation to reduce posttraumatic visual loss. There is also a possibility of late complication due to vitreoretinal

Ex vivo porcine model for eye, eyelid, and orbit movement analysis of 4-mm ferromagnetic foreign bodies in MRI.

PURPOSE: Ferromagnetic foreign bodies (FFB) present during magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) explorations can lead to tissue injury due to movement, especially in and around the eyes. Ferromagnetic foreign bodies located in the intraocular area, eyelids, and orbit are thus prohibited from undergoing MRI. The aim of the study was to analyze movement of 4-mm ferromagnetic foreign bodies in MRI in the eye, eyelid, and orbit using computed tomography (CT) scan. METHOD: We developed a porcine model using 12 quarters of fresh porcine heads. Each porcine head included one whole orbit with the ocular

[Combined operation for the foreign body in the eye complicated with traumatic cataract: an analysis of 88 cases].

The foreign body in the eye complicated with traumatic cataract is one of the common causes of blindness. The rate of blindness ranges from 20% to 48.9%. This paper analyses combined operation for 88 cases of foreign body in the eye with traumatic cataract. The visual acuity below 0.05 accounted for 85.2% of the cases before operation and reduced to 27.3% after operation. Postoperatively, the corrected visual acuities were from 0.06 to 1.5 in 73.3% of the cases and 0.6 to 1.5 in 22.7% respectively. The patients should be treated with combined operation earlier. The way of operation depends on
