[Local prevention with interferon of "epidemic" conjunctivitis caused by a currently unidentifiable virus].

Topical Interferon application did effectively interrupt the further clinical spread of a highly contagious viral keratoconjunctivitis. A total of 130 endangered inpatients, still free from symptoms, were treated with one drop per eye daily for a period of 12 days. 123 patients stood free from any further infection. Only during the first two days after the beginning of the Interferon prophylaxis 7 inpatients showed an acute viral keratoconjunctivitis still. Obviously these patients were infected prior to the prophylactic therapy and were just in the incubation period. We conclude that Interfer

Quantitative Investigation of Viral Load in Acute to Subacute Human Adenovirus Type 54 Conjunctivitis.

To understand the clinical course of human adenoviral (HAdV) conjunctivitis and establish a better treatment regimen, 38 eyes of 19 patients with HAdV-54 conjunctivitis for less than one week from onset were evaluated for clinical signs and symptoms and DNA copy numbers. A viral load of 104-105 is required to develop symptoms of HAdV conjunctivitis, as symptoms were present in eyes with viral loads of ≥104 at least once during the course. Next, it was observed that asymptomatic infections in the contralateral eyes are common, as the virus was detected in most eyes that did not develop conjunct

Human immunodeficiency virus and opportunistic ocular infections.

Opportunistic ocular infections are a common and important complication of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Cytomegalovirus retinitis is by far the most frequent infection, but other viral, bacterial, and parasitic infections of the posterior segment of the eye may be seen. Infections of the anterior segment are less common but may cause visual loss if not treated. Prompt recognition of these diseases is essential because ocular involvement may be an early sign of systemic dissemination.

Systemic viral infections and their retinal and choroidal manifestations.

Viruses are one of the most common causes of infections involving the posterior segment of the eye. Such infections can occur either on a congenital or an acquired basis, and may affect primarily the retina or the choroid. Congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) and rubella infections may result in retinitis. CMV retinitis is also the most common cause of acquired viral retinitis, primarily because of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Other types of viral retinitis, such as those caused by herpes simplex or herpes zoster, can occur in immunocompromised or immunocompetent individuals. Ret

Ocular pathology in NeuroAIDS - An autopsy study.

The central nervous system (CNS) and the eye are involved in Human immunodeficiency virus related disease. Although, optic nerve is considered an extension of the CNS, it has not been systematically evaluated to determine if infections of brain can extend into the eye or vice versa. The brain and posterior compartment of eyeball retrieved at autopsy of patients succumbing to NeuroAIDS, were evaluated with Hematoxylin & Eosin, special stains and immunohistochemistry for infective pathogens. Multiplex PCR was performed in vitreous, CSF and serum for simultaneous detection of bacterial, viral, an

A review of the critical role of vitamin D in the functioning of the immune system and the clinical implications of vitamin D deficiency.

This review looks at the critical role of vitamin D in improving barrier function, production of antimicrobial peptides including cathelicidin and some defensins, and immune modulation. The function of vitamin D in the innate immune system and in the epithelial cells of the oral cavity, lung, gastrointestinal system, genito-urinary system, skin and surface of the eye is discussed. Clinical conditions are reviewed where vitamin D may play a role in the prevention of infections or where it may be used as primary or adjuvant treatment for viral, bacterial and fungal infections. Several conditions

Sonographic findings in fetal viral infections: a systematic review.

UNLABELLED: Viral infections are a major cause of fetal morbidity and mortality. Transplacental transmission of the virus, even in subclinical maternal infection, may result in a severe congenital syndrome. Prenatal detection of viral infection is based on fetal sonographic findings and polymerase chain reaction to identify the specific infectious agent. Most affected fetuses appear sonographically normal, but serial scanning may reveal evolving findings. Common sonographic abnormalities, although nonspecific, may be indicative of fetal viral infections. These include growth restriction, ascit

Experimental cytomegalovirus ophthalmitis.

Cytomegalovirus can produce a severe necrotizing chorioretinitis in patients on immunosuppressive therapy and infants born with congenital cytomegaloviral inclusion disease. To study the effect of cytomegalovirus on the eye, murine cytomegalovirus was injected into the eyes of nonimmunosuppressed Swiss CD-1 weanling mice. The eyes were then prepared for virus titer, as well as light and electron microscopy at variable periods after inoculation (1 to 28 days). From days 2 to 6, the hallmarks of cytomegalovirus infection, intranuclear and intracytoplasmic viral inclusions, were evident within cy

Ocular Pathology: Role of Emerging Viruses in the Asia-Pacific Region-A Review.

The role of viral infections in ocular pathology varies greatly, involving all the components of the eye. Some viruses like herpes simplex, herpes zoster, adenovirus, enterovirus 70, influenza virus, human immunodeficiency virus, and cytomegalovirus are well-known for their role in ocular pathology. In recent years, emerging and resurging viral infections represent an important public health problem. The Asia-Pacific region has witnessed a number of pandemic and epidemic outbreaks caused by these viruses during the last 2 decades. The number of ocular complications being reported in patients o

Ocular and periocular Usutu virus-associated lesions in naturally infected Eurasian blackbirds (Turdus merula).

Usutu virus (USUV) is a zoonotic neurotropic arbovirus related to the West Nile virus that causes mortality in birds and sporadic neurologic human disease. Current research on natural USUV-associated disease lacks data on ocular involvement. This study investigated ocular and periocular tissue involvement in natural USUV infections and associated disease in Eurasian blackbirds (Turdus merula). Twenty-two found-dead Eurasian blackbirds were examined. USUV reverse transcriptase quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) detected 12/22 infected blackbirds. Histology and immunohistochemistry

Targeting species D adenoviruses replication to counteract the epidemic keratoconjunctivitis.

Human adenoviruses are non-enveloped DNA viruses causing various infections; their pathogenicity varies dependent on virus species and type. Although acute infections can sometimes take severe courses, they are rarely fatal in immune-competent individuals. Adenoviral conjunctivitis and epidemic keratoconjunctivitis are hyperacute and highly contagious infections of the eye caused by human adenovirus types within species D. Currently there is no causal treatment available to counteract these diseases effectively. The E2B region of the adenovirus genome encodes for the viral DNA polymerase, whic

Ocular manifestations of vaccine-preventable diseases: A comprehensive review.

Vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) remain a significant contributor to global ocular morbidity, yet their ophthalmic manifestations are often underrecognized. This review synthesizes current evidence on viral and bacterial VPDs with ocular involvement, highlighting a spectrum of presentations-from conjunctivitis to keratitis, uveitis, and optic neuritis. Such infections may affect a range of ocular tissues through mechanisms including direct viral invasion, immune-mediated inflammation, and secondary complications. While the frequency and severity of ocular involvement vary among pathogens, t

Annual review of systemic disease--1997--II.

The intention of this series of semiannual reviews of systemic diseases is not to develop an annual encyclopedic compendium of every article published in the prior calendar year on each systemic illness but rather to select for each issue a few systemic diseases of import to the neuro-ophthalmologist, and to summarize the literature that has developed over the past few years. For each systemic disease selected, the review will cover new developments in its epidemiology; new reports of its neuro-ophthalmic, ocular, and neurologic manifestations; unique clinical presentations; radiologic and lab

The eye in systemic infection.

Bacterial, fungal, viral, and parasitic pathogens all cause systemic infection and can spread to the eye. Dissemination of pathogens via the bloodstream can lead to direct involvement of the eye. Visual loss is common in bacterial or fungal endophthalmitis, and toxoplasmosis is a major cause of ocular morbidity and poor vision after congenital or acquired infection. Some infections cause intraocular damage by indirect mechanisms (eg, HIV-mediated immunosuppression), leading to opportunistic infections such as cytomegalovirus infection, periocular nerve involvement due to leprosy, and hypersens

Viral Retinopathy in Experimental Models of Zika Infection.

PURPOSE: Emerging evidence has shown that both congenital and adult Zika virus (ZIKV) infection can cause eye diseases. The goals of the current study were to explore mechanisms and pathophysiology of ZIKV-induced eye defects. METHODS: Wild-type or A129 interferon type I receptor-deficient mice were infected by either FSS13025 or Mex1-7 strain of ZIKV. Retinal histopathology was measured at different time points after infection. The presence of viral RNA and protein in the retina was determined by in situ hybridization and immunofluorescence staining, respectively. Growth curves of ZIKV in pe

IFNβ absence compensates for LAT functions in latency reactivation and T cell exhaustion.

Type I interferons (IFNs) generate strong antiviral immunity following viral infection in mice and humans. These type I IFNs are encoded by at least 14 IFNα genes and a single IFNβ gene. We showed that the absence of one of the IFNα genes (IFNα2A-/-) affected latency levels in herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) ocularly infected mice but not in infected control mice, and the absence of IFNα2A did not affect viral reactivation in ocularly infected mice. Since the role of IFNβ in HSV-1 latency reactivation and the potential effect of latency-associated transcript (LAT) on IFNβ activity is not k

The role of antibody indexes in clinical virology.

BACKGROUND: Serological techniques are an essential part of the diagnostic tools used in clinical virology. Among these techniques, antibody indexes are not novel, but do require specific expertise. Their niche has expanded substantially in recent years due to increasing evidence of their performance to diagnose viral infections. OBJECTIVES: This narrative review describes the background and clinical applications of antibody indexes. The first objective is to provide an overview of the theoretical background, insights for implementation, limitations and pitfalls. The second objective is to re

Tear lysozyme levels in bacterial, fungal and viral corneal ulcers.

Low levels of tear lysozyme were observed in patients with infective corneal ulcers, when compared with controls. Lowest levels were seen in patients with bacterial corneal ulcers. The levels of tear lysozyme showed a corresponding decrease with the increase in Schirmer test values; meaning thereby, that in ocular conditions associated with increased rate of tear flow, the lysozyme content in tears tends to be low.
