The International journal of eating disorders2026eng
OBJECTIVE: Binge-eating disorder (BED) is a serious psychological condition, often associated with trauma, as well as many critical physical and psychological consequences. Despite the availability of several evidence-based treatments, full remission rates and long-term recovery rates remain suboptimal. Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy has demonstrated early promise in the treatment of eating disorders (EDs) but has yet to be examined in those with BED. To our knowledge, the current study was the first pilot randomized controlled trial to examine the feasibility and

BACKGROUND: A traumatic birth experience can have negative consequences for both mother and infant, including developing (symptoms of) posttraumatic stress disorder, postpartum depression, difficulties in mother-infant bonding, fear of childbirth, or reduced quality of life.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness and safety of early trauma-focused therapy, specifically eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy, in reducing symptoms and incidence of posttraumatic stress disorder at 9 weeks postpartum in women with a traumatic birth experience, compared with ca

BACKGROUND: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) has been well established as an effective treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, PTSD has been re-categorized as part of trauma and stressor-related disorders instead of anxiety disorders. We conducted the first meta-analysis on Randomized Controlled Trials to evaluate the effectiveness of EMDR on reducing symptoms of anxiety disorders.
METHODS: A manual and systematic search using various databases and reference lists of systematic review articles published up to December 2018 was conducted. The symptoms

OBJECTIVES: In older adults, PTSD is associated with decreased verbal learning and executive dysfunction. Therefore, feasibility of EMDR-treatment to improve cognitive performance in older adults with PTSD was examined. Additionally, we investigated pre-treatment correlation with often co-occurring risk factors for cognitive decline (sleep problems, depressive disorder, physical inactivity, childhood traumatic events).
DESIGN: Multicenter design with pre-post measurements.
SETTING: Psychiatric Dutch hospitals Mondriaan Mental Health Center and Altrecht.
PARTICIPANTS: 22 treatment-seeking PT

We report the results of a pilot study regarding the adaptation of the group eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) protocol for the treatment online, for the management of trauma associated with the COVID-19 Pandemic in Italy. The target group were healthcare workers in a nursing home (Residenza sanitaria assistita, RSA) who decided to live and stay on site during the most acute phase of the Pandemic in order to protect the residents of the home. Scores for perceived post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and quality of emotional experience improved significantly followi

BACKGROUND: People with severe mental illness are often excluded from trials related to Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. Principal concerns are that they may not tolerate treatment, might risk relapse or that psychotic symptoms may worsen. There is however building evidence of a traumatogenic etiology of psychotic disorder that may benefit therapeutically from EMDR. However, EMDR in this role is done mainly in specialist tertiary settings.
AIM: To conduct a randomized exploratory trial of prospective treatment of EMDR for people with psychotic disorder and a histo

Background: While normal tinnitus is a short-term sensation of limited duration, in 10-15% of the general population it develops into a chronic condition. For 3-6% it seriously interferes with many aspects of life. Objective: The aim of this trial was to assess effectiveness of a trauma-focused approach, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), in reducing tinnitus distress. Methods: The sample consisted of 35 adults with high levels of chronic tinnitus distress from five general hospitals in the Netherlands. Participants served as their own controls. After pre-assessment (T1), pa

BACKGROUND: Depression is a severe mental disorder that challenges mental health systems worldwide as the success rates of all established treatments are limited. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a scientifically acknowledged psychotherapeutic treatment for PTSD. Given the recent research indicating that trauma and other adverse life experiences can be the basis of depression, the aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of EMDR therapy with this disorder.
METHOD: In this study, we recruited a group of 16 patients with depressive episodes in an inpat

BACKGROUND: Because nurses are involved in providing care to their patients, cognitive failure can interfere with vital healthcare tasks. Emotional issues, stress, and anxiety can expedite the occurrence of cognitive failure and interventions are needed to help overcome this problem. Therefore, the aim of the present randomized clinical trial study was to evaluate the effect of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy on cognitive failure among nurses.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was a randomized clinical trial involving 90 nurses selected through purposive sampling.

In a drug-facilitated sexual assault (DFSA), the person's level of intoxication may result in incomplete memory. This paper describes eye movement and desensitization reprocessing (EMDR) with client-centered adaptations to address an incomplete trauma memory in a 26-year-old woman. The client was experiencing PTSD, characterized by nightmares and derealization. Therapy followed standard EMDR procedures with three minor modifications to help the client maintain current awareness. Although the memory remained incomplete, the client-centered adaptations promoted working through of the clients' tr

First responders are exposed to repetitive work-related trauma and, thus, are at risk of developing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Eye-movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy intervention designed to treat symptoms of posttraumatic stress. We conducted a systematic review to examine the viability of EMDR among first responders. The primary aim of this review was to identify studies that have trialed EMDR among first responders and evaluate its effectiveness in reducing trauma-related symptoms; a secondary aim was to identify whether EMDR has been used as an e

Analyses of scaled self-report data from Vietnam War veterans receiving inpatient treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder drawn during a program evaluation study suggested inpatient treatment as provided by the program resulted in significant improvement in the areas of Anxiety, Anger, Depression, Isolation, Intrusive Thoughts (of combat experiences), Flashbacks, Nightmares (of combat experiences), and Relationship Problems. Comparing the relative effects of the incremental addition of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Relaxation Training, and Biofeedback found that EM

Suicide is a significant global public health issue. Existing evidence-based interventions for suicidal ideation (SI), while helpful, have limitations including suboptimal efficacy, and high resource intensiveness and attrition. As SI is often related to stressful events, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) psychotherapy, an evidence-based treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), has been utilized as a novel approach for addressing SI. This study explored the lived experiences of adult mental health outpatients who received web-based, therapist-delivered EMDR target

Background/Objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to increased mental health issues, particularly among long-COVID patients, who experience persistent symptoms post-recovery, potentially leading to chronic conditions. The psychological impact of long-COVID is still largely unknown, but it may contribute to mental disorders like Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Given the global rise in anxiety and depression, exploring therapies like Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) for long-COVID traumatic disorders is crucial. This study explores the effectiveness of remote EMDR t

Medically-induced post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is substantially more prevalent than PTSD in the general population. In people with stroke, it can impact as many as 23% of patients, with negative effects on mental health as well as stroke-related disability. Medically-induced PTSD may have unique features compared to other forms of PTSD, and therefore there is a pressing need to evaluate existing treatments for PTSD in this context. The current study reports on the feasibility, safety, and efficacy of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) for PTSD subsequent to a pontine

The impact of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) on the sleep of patients is widely reported. However, the parameters that can be altered are not the same for all patients. Some studies report an impairment of sleep maintenance and recurrent nightmares, while others failed to find such alterations. Among the many treatments, the eye movement desensitization reprocessing (EMDR) is a therapy used specifically to treat PTSD and general trauma. The purpose of this study was to examine whether EMDR treatment can improve PTSD symptoms, such as sleep, depression, anxiety, and poor quality of life.

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic pain disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, and stiffness in muscles and joints. Traumatic life experiences and post-traumatic stress symptoms play a role in its development and persistence. Although previous research suggests that pain and FM symptoms decrease after eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, its effectiveness has not been investigated in a controlled manner. The present study investigated the effectiveness of a six-session, 90-minute EMDR therapy using a multiple baseline single-case experimental d

BACKGROUND: Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy has been reported to be very efficacious for treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other anxiety-related conditions. However, a review of the literature reveals the sparse use of this therapy in the field of pediatric dentistry. This study aimed to evaluate anxiety trends in pediatric dental patients during local anesthesia and extraction with and without EMDR therapy.
METHODS: Children in the age range of 8-12 years who required dental extractions were assigned randomly into two groups: an EMDR group (group
