Bedside video-oculographic evaluation of eye movements in acute supratentorial stroke patients: A potential biomarker for hemispatial neglect.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The presence of hemispatial neglect adversely affects functional outcomes in stroke patients; consequently, it warrants early targeted rehabilitative intervention. Nevertheless, hemispatial neglect in the acute phase of stroke has often been underdiagnosed. In this study, we aimed to detect hemispatial neglect at the bedside in acute stroke patients by measuring eye movements using video-oculography (VOG). METHODS: Forty-seven patients with acute unilateral supratentorial stroke were enrolled. We quantitatively measured horizontal saccade (latency, velocity, and amplit

Approach to the Examination and Classification of Nystagmus.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Physical therapists caring for patients with neurologic or vestibular disorders must routinely examine and characterize nystagmus and other oscillatory eye movements. Often, the diagnosis hinges on proper interpretation of the nystagmus pattern. This requires understanding the terminology surrounding the numerous attributes and influencing factors of nystagmus, a systematic approach to the examination, and a classification structure that guides practitioners to the specific nystagmus type and subsequent evaluation and management. SUMMARY OF KEY POINTS: Nystagmus is an

Diagnosis of schizophrenia by integrated saccade scores and associations with psychiatric symptoms, and functioning.

Eye movement as a neurobiological biomarker of schizophrenia. We aim to estimate diagnostic accuracy of integrated pro/antisaccade eye movement measurements to discriminate between healthy individuals and schizophrenic patients. We compared the eye movement performance of 85 healthy individuals and 116 schizophrenia-stable patients during prosaccade and antisaccade tasks. The difference eye movement measurements were accumulated by stepwise discriminant analysis to produce an integrated score. Finally, the diagnostic value of the integrated score was calculated by the receiver operating charac

What does a motorcyclist look at while driving at urban arterials?

To design adequate measures for enhancing riders' safety, a necessary first step is to understand the riders' visual scanning strategies under different traffic conditions. This paper presents the preliminary analysis of eye tracking data collected by three riders in the Athens metropolitan area, riding along urban arterial motorways and along an undivided urban road. Apart from the fixation duration and location, the fixated road elements and specific objects were annotated and analysed. The mean duration of fixations was found to be higher on urban roads than on motorways for all traffic den

Effective differentiation between depressed patients and controls using discriminative eye movement features.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a common debilitating mental disorder caused by various factors. Identifying and diagnosing depression are challenging because the clinical evaluation of depression is mainly subjective, lacking objective and quantitative indicators. The present study investigated the value and significance of eye movement measurements in distinguishing depressed patients from controls. METHODS: Ninety-five depressed patients and sixty-nine healthy controls performed three eye movement tests, including fixation stability, free-viewing, and anti-saccade tests, and eleven eye movement

An automated segmentation approach to calibrating infantile nystagmus waveforms.

Infantile nystagmus (IN) describes a regular, repetitive movement of the eyes. A characteristic feature of each cycle of the IN eye movement waveform is a period in which the eyes are moving at minimal velocity. This so-called "foveation" period has long been considered the basis for the best vision in individuals with IN. In recent years, the technology for measuring eye movements has improved considerably, but there remains the challenge of calibrating the direction of gaze in tracking systems when the eyes are continuously moving. Identifying portions of the nystagmus waveform suitable for

Effects of Eye Movement Training and Changes of Gaze During Walking in a Patient With Oculomotor Disorder After Brainstem Hemorrhage.

We report a case of a patient who developed pontine hemorrhage and presented with eye movement disorders but was able to regain conjugate eye movement through eye movement training, resulting in improved walking ability.  The patient was a 39-year-old man who presented with cerebral hemorrhage. He was admitted to the hospital due to a pontine hemorrhage extending from the midbrain to the medulla oblongata and perforation of the fourth ventricle. Symptoms included right hemiplegia, right upper and lower limb paresthesias, ataxia of the trunk, left abducens nerve palsy, left facial nerve palsy,

Motion integration is anisotropic during smooth pursuit eye movements.

Smooth pursuit eye movements (pursuit) are used to minimize the retinal motion of moving objects. During pursuit, the pattern of motion on the retina carries not only information about the object movement but also reafferent information about the eye movement itself. The latter arises from the retinal flow of the stationary world in the direction opposite to the eye movement. To extract the global direction of motion of the tracked object and stationary world, the visual system needs to integrate ambiguous local motion measurements (i.e., the aperture problem). Unlike the tracked object, the s

Mechanisms of facial emotion recognition in autism spectrum disorders: Insights from eye tracking and electroencephalography.

While behavioural difficulties in facial emotion recognition (FER) have been observed in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), behavioural studies alone are not suited to elucidate the specific nature of FER challenges in ASD. Eye tracking (ET) and electroencephalography (EEG) provide insights in to the attentional and neurological correlates of performance, and may therefore provide insight in to the mechanisms underpinning FER in ASD. Given that these processes develop over the course of the developmental trajectory, there is a need to synthesise findings in regard to the developm

Comparison of eye movements in schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorder.

AIM: Eye movement abnormalities are often associated with psychiatric illness. Subjects with either schizophrenia or autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have been reported to show eye movement abnormalities. However, it is still unclear whether eye movement abnormalities in schizophrenia and in ASD have common features. This study aimed to understand the similarities/differences in eye movement abnormalities of subjects with schizophrenia and those with ASD. METHODS: We analyzed 75 eye movement characteristics of 83 subjects with schizophrenia, 17 subjects with ASD and 255 healthy controls that we

Eye Movement Abnormalities in Major Depressive Disorder.

Background: Despite their high lifetime prevalence, major depressive disorder (MDD) is often difficult to diagnose, and there is a need for useful biomarkers for the diagnosis of MDD. Eye movements are considered a non-invasive potential biomarker for the diagnosis of psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia. However, eye movement deficits in MDD remain unclear. Thus, we evaluated detailed eye movement measurements to validate its usefulness as a biomarker in MDD. Methods: Eye movements were recorded from 37 patients with MDD and 400 healthy controls (HCs) using the same system at five Univ

Infants' perceptions of constraints on object motion as a function of object shape.

Three studies examined young infants' ability to distinguish between expected and unexpected motion of objects based on their shape. Using a preferential-looking paradigm, 8- and 12-month-old infants' looking time towards expected and unexpected motion displays of familiar, everyday objects (e.g., balls and cubes) was examined. Experiment 1 demonstrated that two factors drive infants' preferential fixations of object motion displays. Both 8- and 12-month-olds displayed a tendency to look at rotating information over non-rotating, stationary visual information. In contrast, only 12-month-olds s

The eardrums move when the eyes move: A multisensory effect on the mechanics of hearing.

Interactions between sensory pathways such as the visual and auditory systems are known to occur in the brain, but where they first occur is uncertain. Here, we show a multimodal interaction evident at the eardrum. Ear canal microphone measurements in humans (n = 19 ears in 16 subjects) and monkeys (n = 5 ears in three subjects) performing a saccadic eye movement task to visual targets indicated that the eardrum moves in conjunction with the eye movement. The eardrum motion was oscillatory and began as early as 10 ms before saccade onset in humans or with saccade onset in monkeys. These eardru

Do eye movements reflect readers' thoughts during reading? Evidence from multidimensional experience sampling and eye movements.

While reading narrative texts, readers' attention often fluctuates from the text (e.g., immersion) to text-unrelated thoughts (e.g., mind-wandering). Research on mind-wandering and immersion suggests that they influence the reading process differently. In this article, we examine the types of thoughts readers have while reading a literary text. Specifically, we investigated the effect of immersion and mind-wandering on eye-movement behaviour during reading. Fifty-six participants read extracts from a novel while their eye-movements were monitored. Participants' thoughts were probed using multi

Exploring Eye Movement Features of Motion Sickness Using Closed-Track Driving Experiments.

ObjectiveTo explore and validate effective eye movement features related to motion sickness (MS) through closed-track experiments and to provide valuable insights for practical applications.BackgroundWith the development of autonomous vehicles (AVs), MS has attracted more and more attention. Eye movements have great potential to evaluate the severity of MS as an objective quantitative indicator of vestibular function. Eye movement signals can be easily and noninvasively collected using a camera, which will not cause discomfort or disturbance to passengers, thus making it highly applicable.Meth

Can Saccade and Vergence Properties Discriminate Stroke Survivors from Individuals with Other Pathologies? A Machine Learning Approach.

Recent studies applying machine learning (ML) to saccade and vergence eye movements have demonstrated the ability to distinguish individuals with dyslexia, learning disorders, or attention disorders from healthy individuals or those with other pathologies. Stroke patients are known to exhibit visual deficits and eye movement disorders. This study focused on saccade and vergence measurements using REMOBI technology V3 and the Pupil Core eye tracker. Eye movement data were automatically analyzed with the AIDEAL V3 (Artificial Intelligence Eye Movement Analysis) cloud software developed by Orasis
