Progressive facial hemiatrophy: report of five cases and biochemical analysis of connective tissue.

Five cases of progressive facial hemiatrophy (PFH) are reported. A nonindurated depression on normal-colored skin was observed in the cheeks of 3 subjects, and 2 patients showed indurated, pigmented atrophic lesions associated with linear scleroderma or generalized morphea. Lipoatrophy with mild subcutaneous fibrosis was observed histologically in the patients with nonindurated depressions. In contrast, the patients with indurated lesions exhibited a marked dermal fibrosis and the disappearance of appendices in the dermis. When compared with unaffected skin used as a control, collagen and glyc

Clinical and serological characteristics of progressive facial hemiatrophy: a case series of 12 patients.

BACKGROUND: Progressive facial hemiatrophy (PFH) is characterized by a slowly progressive atrophy of soft tissues and in some cases bony structures. Coexisting features of localized scleroderma (LS) are commonly observed, indicating the close nature of both disorders. OBJECTIVE: We sought to investigate clinical, serological, and radiographic findings in PFH from 278 patients with LS and to discuss the relationship to linear scleroderma en coup de sabre (LSCS). METHOD: A total of 12 patients with PFH were retrospectively evaluated on the basis of clinical, serological, and radiographic findi

Three-dimensional imaging of progressive facial hemiatrophy (Parry-Romberg syndrome) with unusual conjunctival findings.

Progressive hemifacial atrophy, also known as Parry-Romberg syndrome, is an uncommon degenerative condition which is poorly defined. It is characterized by a slow and progressive atrophy affecting one side of the face. The onset usually occurs during the first two decades of life. Characteristically, the atrophy progresses slowly for several years, and then it becomes stable. Ophthalmic involvement is common, with progressive enophthalmos which is a frequent finding. Cutaneous pigmentation is common in such conditions, however its extension to the conjunctiva is rarely reported. We report a ca

Pemphigoid gestationis in a female with progressive facial hemiatrophy: microchimerism as a speculative shared background is disputable.

BACKGROUND: Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) are a family of polysaccharides found abundantly in the extracellular matrix (ECM) of tissues. Research has indicated that the dysregulation of ECM, including changes and disruptions in GAGs, contributes to various cancer hallmarks such as metabolic reprogramming, persistent growth signals, immunosuppression, angiogenesis, tumor invasion, and metastasis. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aims to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of GAGs, including heparan sulfate (HS), chondroitin sulfate (CS), and hyaluronic acid (HA), in early detection of cancer. Scleroderma 'en coup de sabre' and progressive facial hemiatrophy. Is it possible to differentiate them?

The aim was to be able to evaluate the diagnosis of two diseases by a consensus of clinical opinion used in the Department of Dermatology of the National Institute of Paediatrics in Mexico City. To differentiate between scleroderma 'en coup de sabre' (SCS) and progressive facial hemiatrophy (PFH), colour slides of 13 patients diagnosed as SCS and nine as PFH were examined by two dermatologists and microscopic slides by two pathologists. In both cases, the slides were randomly presented and no clinical information was given. The clinical and histopathological findings were statistically compare

Overlap between linear scleroderma, progressive facial hemiatrophy and immune-inflammatory encephalitis in a paediatric cohort.

UNLABELLED: Linear scleroderma en coup the sabre (LSCS), progressive facial hemiatrophy (PFH) and autoimmune encephalitis are distinct clinical entities, although patients with overlapping features have been reported. We performed a multicenter retrospective review of a series of children with LSCS and/or PFH to explore the relation between these entities. The files of 16 children were reviewed, 11 presented with LSCS, 5 with PFH, with time overlapping cutaneous features were seen. Extracutaneous signs were found in both groups. ANA were present in more than 50 % of patients. Almost half of ou

Progressive facial hemiatrophy complicated by sclerodactyly, Raynaud's phenomenon, anti-ribonucleoprotein antibody, and trigeminal nerve disturbance.

A Japanese woman was diagnosed as having progressive facial hemiatrophy when she was 26 years old. After 30 years, Raynaud's phenomenon and sclerodactyly suddenly appeared; at the same time, positive rheumatoid factor and anti-ribonucleoprotein (anti-RNP) antibody were noted on serological examinations. When she was 60 years old, trigeminal nerve disturbance also appeared. The associations between progressive facial hemiatrophy, systemic scleroderma, and trigeminal nerve disturbance are interesting and should be discussed.

Progressive facial hemiatrophy: central nervous system involvement and relationship with scleroderma en coup de sabre.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship of progressive facial hemiatrophy (PFH) and scleroderma en coup de sabre by establishing the presence and type of central nervous system (CNS) involvement in both diseases and the possible coexistence of PFH with scleroderma in other body sites. METHODS: We divided 19 cases of PFH into 2 groups: group 1 in which atrophies were preceded by cutaneous indurations (n = 10) and group 2 with no precedent indurations (n = 9). The third group consisted of 7 cases of scleroderma en coup de sabre with no PFH features. Clinical and laboratory investigations inc

[Progressive facial hemiatrophy (Parry-Romberg disease). Report of two cases associated with trigeminal neuralgia and cramps].

The authors report two cases of progressive facial hemiatrophy (PFH) associated with cranial nerves hyperexcitability. One of them (Case 1), a 41-year-old-woman noticed a slight atrophy on the left side of her face at age of ten. For the last three months, she has been suffering from fits of neuralgic pains on the left side of her face which have not ceased by drug treatment In view of this, a surgery procedure was planned for the patient. The other patient (Case 2), a 33-year-old-woman has a 8 year history which started with cutaneous abnormalities (white and dark spots). Two years later she

Use of dissimilar trifocals to equalize fields of view for asymmetric orbital positions secondary to progressive facial hemiatrophy.

A 58-year-old woman presented, complaining that the vertical field of view (henceforth referred to as "field") through the middle (intermediate distance) segment of her right trifocal lens was disturbingly narrower than the left. She had undergone facial surgery for Parry-Romberg syndrome, after which right enophthalmos and hypo-orbit persisted. The longer lens-to-eye distance in the enophthalmic right eye caused the 7-mm vertical dimension of the middle segment to subtend a smaller angle at the right eye than the left, producing unequal fields. Trifocals with a larger 10-mm right eye intermed

Progressive facial hemiatrophy: a complex disorder not only affecting the face. A report in a monozygotic male twin pair.

UNLABELLED: Progressive facial hemiatrophy (PFH) is a ubiquitous disease, characterized by hyperpigmentation of skin followed by unilateral craniofacial atrophy of subcutaneous tissues, including fat, muscle and bone. Hereditary factors have been postulated to be involved in the aetiology of PFH. Yet, the occurrence of PFH in one of two identical male twins reported here makes this possibility unlikely. PFH usually occurs in the first two decades of life, and the clinical presentation resembles linear scleroderma. PFH may be complicate by autoimmune, neurological, ocular and dental disorders.

[Hemifacial atrophy. A case report associated with linear scleroderma].

The authors report a case of facial hemiatrophy, secondary to linear scleroderma, and review the various possible causes of facial hemiatrophy. The various treatments proposed to correct facial hemiatrophy are described. The advantages and disadvantages of each technique together with their indications as a function of the severity of the lesions are then discussed. Free flap currently appears to be the treatment of choice in severe forms and the main question concerns the choice of flap. The authors prefer an inverted dermal fat flap because of its advantages (absence of long-term ptosis, bet

Hemiatrophy.

The authors present a series of seven patients who have a diagnosis fitting that of combined ipsilateral facial and somatic hemiatrophy. Diagnostic features include facial, tongue, and ear asymmetry and associated decreases in length and size of the ipsilateral limbs. The symptomatic problems related to leg length discrepancy can be addressed in the usual fashion, and this condition does not appear to progress to large leg length discrepancies. The cosmetic side of this disorder is often concerning: it is the most reliable identification of the existence of this condition and is present from b
