[Effect of electroacupuncture on ultrastructural changes of facial nerve in rabbits with facial nerve injury].

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) on ultrastructure of facial nerve and Schwann cells in facial nerve injury rabbits so as to explore its mechanism underlying improving facial palsy. METHODS: A total of 60 Japanese white rabbits were randomly assigned to normal control (normal, n = 6), sham-operation (sham, n = 18), model (n = 18) and EA (n = 18) groups. The facial nerve injury model was established by clamping the right facial nerve for 5 min by using a pair of forceps. EA (1.5 V, 3 Hz/60 Hz) was applied to "Yifeng" (TE 17)-"Hegu" (LI 4), and "Dicang" (ST4)-"Jiache"

Facial Nerve Repair following Acute Nerve Injury.

Background  Acute facial nerve iatrogenic or traumatic injury warrants rapid management with the goal of reestablishing nerve continuity within 72 hours. However, reconstructive efforts should be performed up to 12 months from the time of injury since facial musculature may still be viable and thus facial tone and function may be salvaged. Methods  Data of all patients who underwent facial nerve repair following iatrogenic or traumatic injury were retrospectively collected and assessed. Paralysis etiology, demographics, operative data, postoperative course, and outcome were examined. Results

The surgical management of facial nerve injury.

The surgical management of facial nerve injuries is dependent upon a thorough understanding of facial nerve anatomy, nerve physiology, and microsurgical techniques. When possible, primary neurorrhaphy is the "gold standard" repair technique. Injuries resulting in long nerve gaps or a significant delay between the time of injury and repair requires alterative techniques, such as nerve grafts, nerve transfers, regional muscle transfers, free tissue transfers, and static procedures. Scrupulous technique, selection of the appropriate surgical management, and aggressive physiotherapy with motor ree

Facial nerve injury in cochlear implantation.

We present eight cases of FN dysfunction after cochlear implantation. Four mechanisms of injury are proposed. The most common injury occurs from the heat of a bur shaft rotating over the FN in the facial recess. Several suggestions are made to help prevent the type of injuries we have seen. Preoperative imaging and intraoperative FN monitoring may be of general assistance in avoiding injuries to the FN, especially in cases of revision surgery and congenital malformations.

Facial nerve injury and hemifacial spasm.

We studied evidence of facial nerve damage in patients with hemifacial spasm. Three types of evidence of nerve damage were analyzed: objectively measured weakness in eyelid protractor strength, clinically evident weakness of muscles innervated by the seventh nerve, and clinically evident aberrant seventh nerve regeneration. Of the 60 patients in the study, 54 (90%) had at least one of these features of seventh nerve damage. Objectively measured eyelid protractor weakness was noted in 27 of 58 patients (47%) who were tested. Clinically apparent weakness of at least one of four facial muscle gro

Hypoglossal-facial nerve anastomosis: a review of forty cases caused by facial nerve injuries in the posterior fossa.

Hypoglossal-facial anastomosis has been our procedure of choice in the repair of the permanently injured facial nerve in the cerebellopontine cistern, when the nerve cannot be primarily repaired. Total failures are few and complications are rare. Most results are good to excellent, if assessment is based upon realistic expectations. These include: 1. normal facial symmetry in repose, 2. good midface voluntary motion, 3. no reflex or emotional facial movement, 4. some synkinesis and donor-injected mass facial movement, and 5. surprisingly little functional loss from hypoglossal paralysis. Our e

The role of antioxidants in facial nerve injury.

Oxidative stress contributes to the pathogenesis of facial nerve injury (FNI), yet the role of antioxidants in driving regeneration and functional recovery remains incompletely defined. This narrative review synthesizes studies published between 2008 and 2025 that evaluated antioxidant interventions in FNI across animal and limited human contexts. We systematically searched five databases and included 19 studies assessing oxidative stress markers and neural outcomes following antioxidant administration. To avoid overgeneralization, we stratified findings by injury model-crush/compression, tran

The surgical management of facial nerve injury.

Treatment of facial nerve injuries depends upon a detailed understanding of its anatomic course, accurate clinical examination, and timely and appropriate diagnostic studies. Reconstruction depends upon the extent of injury, the availability of the proximal stump. and the time since injury and duration of muscle denervation. Although no alternative is perfect, these techniques, in combination with static and ancillary procedures. can protect the eye, prevent drooling, restore the smile, and improve facial symmetry. Transtympanic facial nerve injury in welders.

The risk for ear injury from molten metal or hot sparks produced during welding procedures is small, but the effects can be significant. Burns, tympanic membrane perforations and chronic otorrhoea are the most common results. Rare cases of inner ear injury and facial nerve paralysis have also been reported. Two cases recently encountered at our institution highlight the risk that exists for facial nerve injury. One patient suffered a significant facial nerve injury and deafness, while the other had a transient facial paresis. The injuries occurred when molten metal (slag) and a hot spark fell

[Iatrogenic injuries of the facial nerve in the mastoid region].

During the past ten years nine patients were referred to our hospital with lesions of the VIIth nerve. These lesions were inflicted during operation on account of chronic otitis media. One patient recovered after conservative treatment. Based on the EMG examination and clinical picture, eight patients were operated. In one who had an extensive lesion it did not prove possible to find the proximal stump and the patient improved after Normann-Dott's operation. In the remaining seven subjects also severe damage was involved: five times complete severing of the nerve occurred, twice partial severi

Effects of hypoglossal and facial nerve injuries on milk-suckling.

Functional roles of the perioral anatomical structures involved in breastfeeding were examined in newborn rat pups in which the hypoglossal (XII) and facial (VII) nerves had been resected at the neonatal stage. The XII nerve controls tongue movement and is comprised of two functionally distinct branches: the medial branch related to protrusion of the tongue and the lateral branch related to its retraction. Newborn rat pups with bilateral resection of either of the XII nerve components (main trunk: XII-trunk; medial branch: XII-med; lateral branch: XII-lat) failed to suckle milk and did not sur

[A study of 108 cases on facial nerve contralateral innervation after facial nerve injury].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the facial nerve contralateral innervation of patients with facial nerve injury. METHODS: Electroneuronography (ENoG) of 22 university student volunteers (US) without any injury and systemic diseases and 108 patients with facial nerve injury were measured. The patients were divided into three groups: iatrogenic, traumatic, and Bell's palsy groups. When stimulating the facial nerve at the site below the lobule and behind the ramus, ENoGs of each branch of the facial nerve on ipsilateral and contralateral sides were recorded. A total of 76 branch I, 81 branch II, 88 br

Silver nitrate injury in the rat sciatic nerve: a model of facial nerve injury.

BACKGROUND: An unpublished communication of a permanent facial paralysis secondary to silver nitrate application in a postoperative mastoid cavity with a dehiscent facial nerve raises concern regarding its neurotoxicity. This study was performed to examine functional neural injury and the morphology of nerve injury due to silver nitrate contact with a peripheral motor nerve. METHODS: Sprague-Dawley male rats were assigned to a sham surgery group or to a group where silver nitrate was applied directly to a surgically exposed sciatic nerve for 1, 5, or 10 seconds. Individual walking track data

PACAP facilitate the nerve regeneration factors in the facial nerve injury.

Pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP) has been reported as a strong neurotrophic factor in the various sites of nervous system. The facial nerve injury is one of the common problems in patients at the Otolaryngology since the nerve damage could occur easily due to the anatomical characteristics. Once it happens, the regeneration is little observed and functional recovery is poor. Thus, we investigated that PACAP might have some influence for regeneration after the facial nerve transaction in the guinea pig. PACAP treatment accelerated time for the appearance of compound mu

[Facial nerve injuries cause changes in central nervous system microglial cells].

INTRODUCTION: Our research group has described both morphological and electrophysiological changes in motor cortex pyramidal neurons associated with contralateral facial nerve injury in rats. However, little is known about those neural changes, which occur together with changes in surrounding glial cells. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the effect of the unilateral facial nerve injury on microglial proliferation and activation in the primary motor cortex. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed immunohistochemical experiments in order to detect microglial cells in brain tissue of rats with unilateral
